  1. I have some brass rings that came with my model kit, and I'm trying to use a patina solution to darken and age them. The instructions say to mix 1 tbsp with 1 cup of water, but after an hour of soaking, the brass (which I cleaned with alcohol first) was unaltered. Is it possible the brass was cut from a wire that came with a clear protective coating on it? If so, what's the best way to remove this? I tried using steel wool to sand it off, but after an additional soaking, it had little effect.
  2. Looks fantastic. However, are those holes for canons inside the captain's cabin? Is that historically accurate?
  3. Progress update. I've glued on and sanded most of the exterior planks. How does it look? I used a sharpie along the edges of the deck planks to simulate caulking. Did I overdo it?
  4. I'm building the Corel Flattie as an RC conversion, and I want to colors and wood finish to look pretty similar to what this user did. I'm a novice at wood finishing. The deck wood is tanganika. What do I use to achieve that effect but also keep it waterproof? If I don't want any stain, and just want a clear waterseal, can I simply use a generic product like Thompson's Water Seal?
  5. That would definitely seal it, but doesn't fiberglass resin add a ton of bulk that loses detail and drastically change the color of the wood? I watched an application video for Bondo's fiberglass resin on Youtube and after curing it requires heavy sanding to get it smooth, and even then it's not clear but some sort of brown/orange color. Couldn't you use a generic acrylic clear coat designed for wood?
  6. Hi, I'm building Corel's "Flattie" kit, modifying it to be sailable via remote control. Since I'm new to both ship modeling and RC, I decided to build the ship initially in a "barebones" form, with minimal planking, painting or decoration, just to test it on open water. If it turned out to be a disaster, with all hands lost, I didn't want to waste weeks worth of painting. Once that was sound, then I'd move on to do the final planking and painting. I've since completed the testing, and it seemed to sail fairly well. The pictures below are from the initial build. Now I'm moving on to the final aesthetics. Deviations I've made from the kit are 1) I enlarged the deck houses to allow more room for the electronics, 2) repurposed the centerboard slot to house a fin keel with weighted ballast, 3) attached extra rigging to main boom and tiller to allow them to be actuated by servos. I'm a complete novice, so if you have any suggestions or comments, they'd be appreciated. To be clear, this isn't a completed model. My plan is to make it look as similar to the box photo as possible, minus some creative liberties taken to make it easier to maintain and sail as RC. Is there anything I should use to seal the external planking against water? It'll be completely painted with acrylics. Do I need to apply any water sealant first or will primer and paint be enough?
