Is Madrona a good wood to use for plank-on-frame models? It is not mentioned in any of my books. It is native to the Pacific Northwest in the US. I have used it for my art boxes, and it handles and machines very well, having little to no grain to speak of with a nice creamy color. It occurred to me it might make a decent alternative to Pear or Boxwood. Any advice?

Thanks, Eric, that is the first I have heard of that book. The Worthpoint page you cited shows the Clyde Leavitt plan set I am dying to get copies of. They show up on eBay about once every 5 years or so, alas.

After many decades of not model making, have revived my interest and would like to build a POF of the Charles Davis 'Lexington' from The Built-Up Ship Model. If anybody knows where I can get a copy of Clyde Leavitt's plans for her, kindly let me know. I look forward to perusing this site and getting back up to speed. Time to get my old copy of Ship Modeler's Shop Notes out of storage!

After a several decades' hiatus from modeling, I have once again opened my thumbworn copy of Charles Davis' The Built-Up Ship Model and once again feel a hankering to build that lovely little ship he erroneously named Lexington. I am sufficiently versed in the research to know that what he really drew was more similar to the British cruiser class brigs, with some tweaks. But the Caldercraft Cruiser model just is not the same, and I have my doubts about the Mamoli kit of Lexington as well. In 1947 Clyde M. Leavitt published, through Popular Mechanix magazine, a full set of plans for the Davis version. I have seen small photos of the sheets, and they look like just what would be needed to do a credible plank-on-frame model. My question is: where do I find a copy of the Leavitt plans, if the Davis 'Lexington' is what I want to build? And are they valid? Thanks- Gerard>
