Hennie, i am looking forward to watching as you create the beautiful ship that is hidden within all the parts spread out on your worktable. I have been following Sjors as he built the Agamemnon and his current SOS build. I have learned a lot from his posts and I am sure I will learn just a much from you. Thank you for sharing your craftsmanship with us!

    Hi Hennie
You will thoroughly enjoy building this ship.
I am currently working on my version of the SOS by De Agostini and am up to the rigging stage.
look up my Snoepert version if you are interested.

    Hi all!!
Finally my kit arrived yesterday evening. I had to wait for her for 8 weeks. I wanted to take a picture of all what is in the box but my hobbyroom is simply not big enough to show it all.
Sergal renewed the building inscription, now also in Dutch.

I putted my new topic on the wrong place and also dubble, so I had to delete it all, so:
@Jörgen and @Sjors, you both have to renew your follow and @Eddie, thx for the tip. I hope I did it right now

    Some pictures...

You want to look through pretty much everything each of them have, and as far as I know they all ship global. Probably 90% of my out-of-control tool collection comes from one of those.

Here was my benchtop when I laid everything out to reorganize because my acquisitions had completely overwhelmed my existing tool holders. This is what happens when a tool nut is twice divorced and is left totally unmonitored: shrink-tube color-coded needle file arrays. And this is just the stuff ON my bench you're not seeing the 22 other drawers and the built-in cabinets etc.

Little better now. Try not to notice there is yet ANOTHER needle file set in the holder.

And while we're at it, if there are people who don't yet know how to sharpen edges, DO something about it  I actually really enjoy sharpening, it can be a very meditative thing to do. And more importantly it's not hard to do, you just have to learn a few things and get the right sharpening tools. Use disposable blades for what they're for, jobs like cutting through glue and material you don't want to use your good knives on, and have super-sharp knives, much sharper than X-acto or even scalpels, waiting on your bench for where it does count. The difference between ok average sharp and really sharp is much more than people think in terms of the quality of the resulting work.

This is the only book you need: The Perfect Edge by Ron Hock. Very clear and straightforward and I am very much an adherent of his no-secondary bevel philosophy.

For me no, I make models of card and paper almost 35 years. It is much easier to use card  for me - I do not need any special tools, have reliable and verified technologies which allow me to achieve expected results and the durability of such models is without changes for over many years - I can say, it is comparable to wooden models.

The girdling is probably unknown technology in ship modeling, but the relevant records prove that it was necessary to perform on some ships, whose hull had excessive draft and lower gunports were just above water. The girdling helped to improve the displacement. Of course, it was an unnatural interference into the original construction.
My target is to make the model as accurate as possible based on historical accuracy, and according to records Royal Katherine was girdled soon after launching.

On the recommendation of the Captain K.L., who is an excellent expert in the field of  shipbuiliding and the history, I have decided to add another layer of planking = the girdling.  Some information about this technology, that was used on real ships in 17th century,  you can find in the book by Brian Lavery: The Arming and Fitting of English Ships of War 1600-1815; pages 57, 60.
More information are also in the Czech forum, but you need to use translator.

Dear friends, thank you very much for your comments.  It is a pleasure and honour for me, that you like my work.
Here is the hull oversprayed with acrylic paints and body spray + primer used for cars. After grinding I will start to change it into a wooden look using strips of various  types od foils. I have already written many details about this technology, so if you are interest in that, please refer at my building log Royal Caroline.

Maybe you will be surprised, but I use common glues - for paper/card and wood dispersion white glue:
    https://www.zbozi.cz/vyrobek/herkules-universalni-lepidlo-pro-domacnost-130-g/?varianta=130-g
And for plastic or metal parts and also the sculptures made of clay I use Superglue.
I always try to keep my hands clean, so I have a damp cloth somewhere close to clean my hands during the work.
    Kind reagards,

thanks Sam......and all who hit the like button    with a lot of these furnishings made earlier,  it doesn't take long to add them to the model.   sometimes it's quite startling,  to see all that progress in a short amount of time.  what really stunk,  was it took me a couple of days {with all the other crap I was doing} to update that Weebly log.   what I have left now,  is to update the Boulogne log on Word Press.......but that will be easy {only two updates so far}.    I've done these logs on every build I've done since 2009........sounds crazy,   but the feedback I've gotten from them has been quite positive and helpful to those inquiring.

it's good though that it doesn't infringe on my build time too badly.......I still manage to enjoy      onward and upward!

for the bow fife rail.......I kept it simple.   it will span from railing to railing.

still need to drill the holes.....     I'm not sure it's good......but I caved.   the aft cabin is now cemented in place.   I will adjust the mizzen mast somehow.   the ship's wheel and steering box is in place as well.

...and it wouldn't be fair not to show the bow.   I made sure they were good pictures

there's still more to go on the deck.........I painted the bilge pump and winch .....the last thing I did.   today,  I didn't do anything.........spent most of the day updating  the Thermopylae log on Weebly,  and was in and out running errands.   I'm hoping to be able to sit back and play tomorrow.   perhaps I can get something done on all three ship projects!    thanks for look'in in!

Boy!!!  didn't I leave a pile 'o puss on my desk..........huh!!!   that has since been moved to one side of my desk.   I had an inspection by the admiral today......she was not happy!   the Wharf got a number of violations.......including the improper compilation of wood!   I promised that I'd have the place ship shape in no time.......she said I had better     so what did I do......I added another boat to the table!    I have been doing a bit of work to the Boulogne Etaples of late,  but I spent yesterday afternoon doing a little on 'ole Thermie.   most of the day yesterday,  I was out getting our car inspected.........nailed it!......got my sticker and I'm legal.   I came home.....ate lunch.......and dove in head first!   the first thing done,  was to fix that stripe I painted on the rub rail.  it was a bit of a process,  but I think it passes muster.

the railings are cemented on the aft cabin roof.  it's not cemented in place yet......still not sure if it's a good idea

the bow railings are cemented in place as well.......I dumped the way I was making the bow fife rail.   looking at other ideas.

the bollards are now in place on the deck (s)

thanks Bob    OK........so my cross trees don't make me look fat........GOOD!   my first attempt at making them {it wasn't on this build}......I'm not too happy with.  if I ever get back to said build,  I might change them.  the day did not go as planned..........

I had left the bow railings on the desk,  in the event during the week end,  I felt up to some play time.   I didn't.   so,  the day began with getting then done and out of the way.   one of the railings.....I forget which one,  had a pin that was out of place.   in trying to fix it,  the pin broke.....so a new one was cemented in it's place......that is,  after filing down the stub of the old one.   the first strand was strung on,  when I realized I would not have enough to do the aft railings.   getting a short length of light cord from the garage,  a fresh bunch of wire strands was extracted.

both railings were strung and cemented.......I found a pair of tweezers that do the trick with straightening out the rungs.......these actually came out looking better.   I may be getting used to this lilliputian modeling    after a bit more tweaking,  they were given a coat of paint.

I made a special sleeve to keep the wire in.......I kept out two for the aft railing.  capping off one end of a plastic tube,  it works perfectly.

the bollards need to be prepped and painted.   in assembling them,  the pins to insert them in the base,  are too long and stick out the bottom.   they need to be filed down first.  once filed,  they were stuck on a piece of tape,  that I had laid out.   the lonely one on the right broke,  so the base needed to be replaced.......good thing I have the extra parts panel,  that I ordered from Cornwall.....I have the part to fix it.

you can see how flimsy the bases are.......made of that thin stiff plywood.   why that particular material was chosen,  is anyone's guess.   the panel I'm talking about can be seen at the beginning of this log.......if you recall,  the parts for the structure in the background,  is on the same panel.   I started to make the fife rails........and the bow fife rail....but I got distracted.........I began thinking.........     I wanted to do something on the trawler.........but that wasn't it      I was befuddled    something that will make a lot of sawdust .......  looking at my desk.......I don't know where I had left off   I know I had the bow rail somewhere..........

well then Greg.......I guess I'd better fix the exhaust on that thing!         thanks for the good word,  my friend.......and thanks for the likes.  this is just the bare bones of the masts.......there's more to be added to them.    as you can see........it was late.   I barely finished trimming the tops.   they needed to have planking added to them.  they said to use the 0.5 x 3 strips........I used the .75 strips {they might even be 1 mm thick}.   leaving a slot for the shrouds to run through,  they were planked to the ends,  leaving a gap between them.

once dry,  they were trimmed using the toe nail clippers.   this wood is really brittle.......the mizzen gave me some grief,  but I fixed it.

are they called cross trees or crojacks.........always knew them as the cross trees {Revell's fault}.   Well.....anyway,  I hope they aren't too big.......based their size according to the caps.   the mizzen is fixed and sanded.......they're all fitted on the ship.

still gotta finish the rub rail stripe.......and make the rest of the deck furnishings.   I think this is the direction of the day.

I finally put together the pictures from Friday.......figured I'd add them in with today's.    bad thing is......I wasn't very diligent with the camera.    I had cemented the boom on the bow spirit.   after it had dried,  I cut some thin strips of brass,  and added collars to the assembly.

at this point,  I began to work on the masts,  since I was playing with them.    double checking the height......guess it's OK.......I matched them to the diagram of the sail plan.   after a bit of whittling to the upper end the tops and the trestle trees were cemented in place.

I thought I had a picture of them in place on the model.......but I guess I didn't.   I had done a few other things before I knocked off for the evening.......making up part of the bow railings,  and adding the second step to the fore and main mast.

I need to finish them,  of course.   the work on the masts continued by adding the second step to the mizzen mast.

to add the third step to the masts,  I had to make the cross trees.   no measurements,  no numbers....I'm pretty much feeling this out.......just going by the diagrams in the instructions {and there are only two to follow.

for the third step,  I found that I was one cap short........must have used a wrong one somewhere,  'cuz there's one in the parts box.   I have some of that  thin stiff plywood,  that the kits supply {a parts panel},  and I made one.   it can be seen in the picture.  the cross tree to the left has not been trimmed yet.......I left the fore and aft bars long...no sanding either.   the fore and main mast were assembled at this time......the mizzen cross tree still needs to be made.

the mizzen was assembled and plank slats were added to the tops........these need to be trimmed.   by the time I finish this update,  I should be able to trim them......if it isn't too late,  I'll post a picture of the masts.......ready for paint and brass.

here's a bit more progress on the 'ole girl.    the anchor guards are in place......and a little bit more.   the rub rail has been painted.....I did a butcher job on it.  it need another coat....then I can do all the touch ups on it.

the rudder is now in place as well.

I added some extra thickness to the pin rail between the fore and main pin racks,  because it looks like there are some belaying pins along this area too.   the main deck cabin and the hold covers have been cemented in place.

I will have to check,  but I may have to add small sections to the pin rails before the fore pin rack,  and aft of the main pin rack.......there may be additional belaying points in these areas as well.  I did more checking on the mast heights.....and as far as I can see......they are correct.  I had also cut the mizzen as well........whittling down the cap areas of the masts,  the tops were cemented in place.   the bow spirit boom was also tapered at this time......still have to add the hardware.

I will have check Cyril's model again.........but the plans show that there is a bit more rake to the main and mizzen mast,  than the fore mast.  I still have to adjust the mizzen....there's too much there,  and quite noticeable.   the width of the aft cabin might be a problem too.   it's made from the kit parts,  and doesn't leave too much room for pin racks for the mizzen.   it's a rainy day today, great for finishing the rub rail stripe.

well......I had all intentions of getting the rudder installed on the ship......first thing I needed to do,  was keep track of it     after assembling the gungeons and pintles together,  I notched the rudder.

the rudder was touched up,  ready to fasten on the assemblies.  I told myself.......remember,  ship side down............I still managed to get one upside down.   after I fixed it,  it was ready for more touch ups.   by this time,  with all the handling,  the copper looked really dull.   when dry,  it was given a coat of lacquer to seal the copper {I had mentioned how Testor's metallic paints couldn't take too much handling......very soft paint}.

in the mean time,  I made a few aspects and pondered over others.   the protective plate for the anchor was not included in the kit,  so I made a pair.  I also looked over the trail boards and the decoration for the stern.   they are made of a gold plated metal....kinda thick and hard.   I'd likely have to heat the decoration in order to bend it to the contour of the stern.    as for the trail boards......they look terrible.......metal flash and I had to do some serious filing to them.   I'll see what I can scratch instead

I had forgotten that I needed railings for the aft cabin.   there are also to be a pair of railings at the bow,   and one around the transom.   the bow railing bases I have soaked and bending on the pine board.  for the cabin railings,  I sanded the thickness down on a piece of strip stock and cut two pieces from it.   holes are drilled down the length of them....an idea have I.   the boom for the bow spirit was also cut.........getting ready to assemble.

the rudder is ready for the booth.

ok....this is gonna seem funny.......'cuz I didn't plan this.  I didn't measure a darn thing.   I've shown these before.......I got them from the jewelry dept from Hobby lobby.   these are eye bolts with a stem that's about 4 inches long.   I cut off the eye bolt with enough to be able to use them,  and used the rest on the railings.

I have others.......these are polished black.   the stem part was chopped up into short pieces......I used the first one cut as a gauge.  when I had enough,  I began cementing them into one of the boards.   after a few were in place,  it became hard for the thing to stand up....kept falling over.  so,  I took the other board and lined the holes up to match {I had drilled both pieces at the same time}.

oh........fancy that!   a ladder!    now,  it just so happens that the 'ladder' is 8 mm wide........so I took a piece of 4 mm wide strip stock,  and used it as a cutting guide.

I still have some of that wire I stripped from a light cord.....tiny stuff.   winding it was a trial at first,  but the second one went much better.....and faster.  I'm in the process of tweaking the rungs,  so they are straight,

the bow spirit and boom is assembled......still needs to be sanded and get some brass on it

as mentioned,  the second railing went much better........the picture is a little blurry.   I blame it on poor lighting........

then the panic attack.......where's the rudder?   I looked on both tables.....behind the desk.......through the garbage can by my desk.......and was getting ready to go get the bag I thew out earlier,  to look though that!  even the admiral started looking.   it wasn't until she mentioned that the DVD I was burning in the other room was done,  that I realized where I had left it.  I'm doing the old burn the VHS cassettes to DVD......bought a handy program to do it.   went in there.......and there it was!.......all dry and waiting for the next step.

here is a better picture of the railings........they have a coat of flat white.   they should get another coat,  because I had to revive the paint.......now it's nothing more that white wash.

the color of the wood shows through.   perhaps tomorrow,  I can begin populating the deck.    still a few more aspects to make....

Ain't I da devil?      we'll see.......it's supposed to be here tomorrow.

I didn't think I'd get much done......it doesn't seem like much.   the stern is where I began...cutting out the transom railing.....both of 'em.

I figure I'd work on both of 'em......if one bites the dust,  I still got the other one.   the way the grain ran was the biggest problem....they did break in a couple places.   but I'd glue them back together and continue on.  while I was sanding them into shape,  the chain plate assemblies were cemented in place.

sanding.......another break and fix......more sanding.   cut 'em to size,  and I had a winner............

then came the bars to hold the dead eyes in place......as mentioned,  I installed them above the rub rail,  instead of cutting the slots through it.   fasten them down with brads after painting them,  and touched them up.

I had painted the gun port lids  {there's another term for them....I forget}.....now that the assemblies are in place,  I have a better idea of their placement {the instructions and diagrams have them in awful places.

the lavatories are cemented in place........

but the fun stopped with the aft cabin.   the mizzen mast runs through the cabin and through a hole inside.   the aft cabin is just dry fitted at the moment,  but the holes are off,  and this gives the mizzen mast more rake than the others.   I have a couple of ideas.....tomorrow I'll see which one is better.

I should hold off on the rest of the deck stuff anyway......I should do the rudder next.

thanks Mark and Sam..........there is a lot more to the story.   yesterday,  we had an electrician who kept shutting off power to parts of the house.   you would know that my computer was in the circuit he was playing with!   needless to say,  I shut down,  rather than reboot.    I did get a little more done.   the aft sections of cap railing was added to the rest of the cap railing.

the fore and main masts were cut out and set in place.   still trying to decide if the height is correct.......no measurements to go by on the instructions.

the first part of the bow spirit was created as well.   the spirit part of the bow spirit was also cut.

the biggest thing was that I assembled the mizzen channel assemblies.   I made the arrangement just a little bit different.

I hope to have more after I get through the work week.  thanks for look'in in
