Making gratings
marius replied to marius's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
Amazing what info one gets when posting a question on this site. Thanks a lot guys. I am going to test all these suggestions and will hopefully be able to retain a method which suits my ability and tools. Apart from helping me these responses are helping to build info for the MSW site which we sorely need after the loss we had. Thanks again marius -

Hi Mati I can spend a lot of time looking at your work. Outstanding. Do you mind sharing your way of making gratings? marius -
Finished all the frames Will most probably redo a couple Made two mistakes Cut to close to the line because I pride myself on my prowess with the Scroll Saw. So I left myself no leeway to correct discrepancies and thus sanded too much wood away. Because I used a thinned down PVA glue I had some distortion when glueing the wet paper to the wood. One of the builds use a combination of masking tape and glue. Will try that next time. Will decide this weekend which frames I am not quite happy with and remake them during the next week and also start on the building board.

Right here begins my first scratch building POF. Seeing that I know that there are going to be a few mishaps I am using whatever wood I have lying around. The frame I made out of a 100 year old piece of Oregon Pine floorboard and was pleasantly surprised wit the end result and the ease with which the wood worked. There are a few blemishes but that was mainly due to bad glueing procedure. Will redo . The Keel is South African white pear and the keelson and false keel is S.African Yellowwood .I am ready to proceed and am asking for access to the rest of the plans.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
