Mike, that Venetian ship looks very beautiful. You're doing the right thing by putting it off until you build up your skills. Scratch building is a whole extra level of difficulty, but is very rewarding. I only scratch build nowadays - I far prefer it.

When you get to doing the Panart Victory (and I understand you want to ease into the hobby gradually - very wise indeed) there's at least one build log for it here:

This might help you with your own Victory project. And you might find others if you do a search (top right of the page) for "Panart Victory".

Thank you again- I have bookmarked this link! I can't imagine building without the use of the web or this forum.

Hi Mike and welcome to Model Ship World.  I am glad you have joined this forum and enjoy the build logs.  We have an enormous group of talented builders who have shared their builds with us.  I look forward to seeing your posts.

Thank you Ryland. I agree and this is probably one of the best managed/moderated hobby sites too. Just tons of priceless info.

Hi Mike, and welcome to MSW. Do you have a particular model in mind?

If not, there's a good place to look here:

Once you start making your model, make sure you start a build log of your own. A great way to get help, advice and encouragement. If it's a kit, the instructions are here:

If you're building from scratch, this is the place to look:

Note that the sections for both kit and scratch build logs are sub-divided into periods - the first one being  "Up to and including 1500 AD", and moving up from there. So make sure your log goes in the right category so it can be found easily.

Good luck with your build, and have fun with it!

Thank you for pulling together the most helpful links in one spot. I do not know what I will tackle first and will need to read through the 'what do you build first' topic next to decided. I previously tracked down and obtained a 1:78 HMS Victory by Mantua/Panart for <$150 that I would like to do second-ish and then would like to work my way up to a scratch-built Venetian ship eventually.

  4. Hi- I created an account after first joining an online build club since this seems to be the best forum out there on shipbuilding, etc. I have enjoyed perusing the posts and hope to get some starter/simple build logs going soon. I am from the US based in the Midwest; home to both the blues and Bigfoot (truck, not the monster).

Thanks in advance for answers to questions I post and to those that posted threads I have learned a great deal from so far.
