New workshop and tools setup.
John Murray replied to John Murray's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Ha! Cheers for that. 🤣 I have the kits to do as I like the subjects. I started rekinding my interest after stumbling across Ohla Batchvarovs channel on Youtube. She has started building Victory models HMS Pegasus. I have always admired the admiralty models with full framing and that is my ultimate goal. I will use the kits to get up to speed before I start my scratch build admiralty. I stumbled across the seawatch books website and saw they had a series of books and plans for an admiralty style model of HMS Pegasus.😳🤔👌 It seemed obvious to me that I should buy them as this would kick off my scratch build model.🙂 -

Cheers for that. Now I just need to figure this all out before I start my kits. -
Morning All, After several months spent moving house, I finally had time to sorta organise my garage into a semblance of a workshop. I have been able to buy a few machines after decades thinking about buying them. They all arrived whilst preparing for the move and this is the first time out of the boxes. The garage is bare aluminium walls. It will get hot in summer +45c and cold in winter 5c. As the house is leased, there is no point insulating it. I bought a Proxxon mini mill, disc sander, dust extractor, thicknesser, planer and scroll saw. I have also purchased a Byrnes 4" table saw with all the accessories to save shipping costs to Australia. Anyways, I am not a woodworker so apart from youtube videos, I am starting from scratch and trying not to spill blood whilst I learn. I spent a day or so trying a layout without machines fixed in place to try and find out space requirements. I read the instructions and gave each machine a twice over to make sure things were tightened correctly. I ran the planer, thicknesser, and tablesaw doing test cuts and checking out the various adjustments after powering them up. After finding space requirements, I bolted them down and cut a 150x40x1000 piece of basswood in half, then planed one half on three sides. I then powered up the thicknesser and finished the 4th side. All this was to help me get familiar with the machines and accessories. Today I thought to try some angle cuts and tried a small 150 x 100 frame with 45 degree angles and a bevel on the frame. It worked out fine and kept me busy trying to figure out what adjustments and accessories on the table saw would be needed and what they could do. The proxxon dust extractor enables me to plug in the powertool so that when I turn on the powertool, the dust extractor starts and stops automatically with the powertool. A nifty feature.

New workshop in the garage.

That sounds a good idea. Apparently we were chosen as we wanted a long lease. Cannot harm to ask. Cheers Hmm, I shall look into that. Cheers My tools were a concern. I bought a few Proxxon tools consisting of a mini mill, a rotary head, a thicknesser, a dust extractor, a disc sander, a scroll saw, as well as a Byrnes table saw with the accessories for it. My concern is protecting them so your idea is a considerations. Cheers Thanks for that. I was not aware of that. Cheers -
New workshop in the garage.

Unfortunately, the shed is a 12x24 foot steel sheet lined garage, no insulation at all. -

That is what I am thinking I shall have to do. I have a few proxxon tools and the Byrnes4" table saw that will be stored in the shed. -

That would be a good idea. Unfortunately I am renting and cannot make those sort of improvements... -
Afternoon all, I am moving house this weekend. I live in Adelaide, South Australia which ranges in temp from around 0 celcius overnight in winter to 45 celcius plus in summer. My question relates to the 2 kits I am planning to build in the shed. As the model building area will be out there I well, I am wondering how people find the various woods and plywoods moving around or distorting whether in the kit or in the kit under construction. I will also have my machinery in the shed of course. The 12 foot by 24 foot shed has power and lights. The interior of the house is not large enough to support a build area at all. I could not find a forum for this particular topic. This seemed the closest suitable forum. regards John

I have only just seen this post but Pear can be bought from A1 timber in Hahndorf South Australia. Their website has a downloadable pdf of every species of wood they stock. I recently purchased 3 metres of Basswood from them. https://www.bukartilla.com.au/timber regards John Murray Copy+of+Timber+PriceList+2019[37402].pdf

Shipping Costs
John Murray replied to Goodshipvenus's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I just paid for a Byrnes 4"table saw and saw accessories to be shipped to South Australia. The subtotal was US$1189. Freight to me via UPS (only option) was US$540 equivalent to AU$770. It's what is is as far as I am concerned, I want it, I gotta pay it. Living in a global economy means I can get great gear from around the world. Edit, I have just reread this thread and realised I bought it from you! 🤣 -
Thank you all for the warm welcome. Regards John

HI there, I have been modelling for most of my life. In my 20s I built a couple of Billings boats but didn't finish. They were beyond me. I have done plastic models for around 50 yrs. Now in my 60s, it is time to revisit the wooden boats that fascinate me. I have bought HMS Pegasus and HMS Vanguard from Victory models and look forward to starting these. I have bought various things to assist me so once things settle down with my moving house, I hope to start soon with a build log here. I will be posting in the ship plans forum as well a question I have. Regards John Adelaide South Australia
