here you go - more accurately described as a powder flask - I have seen examples with that ribbed construction

My guess for the left is a powder horn, the shape is very consistent with early versions - I will try to find a good image

I have v2 with the PE-50 brass trunnions. They are quite fiddly to get right. Looks like you have Version 3 cannons which in my humble opinion are preferable and a version improvement.

Just a quick update because I've never used the Micro Sol and Micro Set that is recommended in the instructions for the decals. I thought the result was much better with those

I don't think I would attempt sails on anything but these Vanguard fishing boats - so the experience is unique although my progress is very slow. We need more finished fishing boats - and there is always Talisker to keep you company !!!

btw here is a bow closeup, - and learning moments. Using a CA glue that was too thin wicked between the planking, looks like cracks but they are in fact flush. Missed a chance to have a really crisp finish.

Mizzen close to being finished up - all needs tying off on the deck after final adjustments. I did a little tidying up before I start on the main

Great great work - you ship builders are smarter than I, -- wish I'd taken this amount of care - never having done this before I just plowed on and ended up with a waterline that I wasn't happy with, and the weakest part of my build

Ah - I wondered about that mark and what it was for in my build. At first I also thought it was the waterline but also discounted that as it being too low, but I bet your explanation re. positioning the decals is right!! An "Erycina" mystery.

Slower progress as I learn how to do rigging. In the end I opted to do the seizing of the standard rigging (black) with a contrasting tan colour. I tried black in the beginning with black on black but I couldn't really tell what was going on and ended up with a sort of amorphous blob. So I scrapped those and will plan on continued tan on black use. So then I will paint the end result black (bow example in one photo below), hopefully that will get a neater result while I learn this art.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
