Well, disaster struck today. One of my earlier builds that I had not yet completed, an Airfix Victory is now shipwrecked. My workshop behind my garage has two doors which were both open and it got super windy. You can guess what happened. It actually looks kind of cool, like it just went through battle!

Did a first coat with tan on the lowest yard and the mast below that. I think I am liking it more than the brown.

The raised details on the bow of this kit are really my only complaint so far. They are not raised enough to bring them out nicely with dry brushing gold. Or maybe my skill just isn't there yet. Excuse the bleeding white from the pinstripes.

Going with brown masts and black yards for now and see how it turns out. Will post pics when painted.

Wow, she's a beauty! Not sure I'm cut out for wood models though. I will stick with plastic for now and be jealous of all you wood masters.

Hi all, I did a few models as a kid and enjoyed it, but never really took the dive. A few years ago, my neighbor gave us a model airplane (I don't even remember what it was) she found at a local thrift store. I finally took it off the shelf and my son and I took a crack at it. It was a disaster. Many of the parts were broken off the sprues and many were missing. I thought, "well, this is dumb." So into the trash it went, and off to the local hobby store we went. We got ourselves a B-52 and shambled it together. By then I was hooked. So over Christmas, after receiving some gift cards, I invested in some proper tools and an airbrush set. I purchased a few random kits on Facebook Marketplace and started tinkering, trying to build some skills before I took a crack at a ship. I have done a couple of ships, quite terribly, but I learned a lot in the process: Academy 1/600 Enterprise, Airfix Victory, Revell Constitution (1:196), currently the Academy Cutty Sark (1:150). I have been doing a lot of reading here and on other sites, looking at technique and advice. So here I am, joining this forum with the goal of advancing in this craft. Looking forward to it. Ryan

Hi all, I'm new here. First build log. Got back into modeling of late and finally joined the forum. I tinkered around a bit with some other kits to build some skills and I feel like this one is where the practice and patience is starting to pay off. I actually kind of feel guilty about how well this kit has gone, almost too easy. Anyone else have experience with this kit? Zero flash. All parts have fit perfectly so far. I know this is not how it usually is. I have been bumbling my way back into the hobby and have made lots of mistakes and am probably still doing things incorrectly, so constructive criticism is welcome from all of you, masters. Obviously I need to do a lot of touch up painting. One question I have is how to paint the masts? The instructions say to paint everything brown, but I think that looks kind of dumb and probably isn't accurate. Any suggestions or good sources to go to for ideas? Starting this build log part way into the project already, so apologies for no earlier pictures. But here is where it lies today.

Have you looked into the Academy 1/150 Cutty? It is a fairly newer kit I believe. I am currently building it and the molding is immaculate. Zero flash. You could also literally build the entire kit without dry fitting anything. It is still a decent size (about 24" long). I got it on Amazon for about $63, so not bad on price.

From what I understand, the newer kits are molded in the same kits as the oldies. I have read elsewhere that this is a problem because the molds are not in the best shape any more and you will run into more flash and other issues on the newer kits.
