    Hello everyone!

Bit of a build log zombie post here but unfortunately I am going to officially close the build log.

Moved to a smaller house three years ago to get oldest child into a school, and with a second toddler running around,  now I simply have nowhere suitable to build this enormous ship!

So, I will be putting it up for sale if anyone is interested.

Will post an official for sale post in next couple of days.

    Hope everyone is well!

Got to say, well done to Amati!

Package arrived today with the photoetch spruce I needed.

So by hook or by crook I have finally managed to collect everything required to finish the build.

    Phew!

In between filling a skip with a couple of tons of rubble and digging up the back of my garden, I have managed to get a bit more done.

The 7" armour belt has now been added to both the port and starboard sides. Hopefully I can smooth out the joins when it comes to painting and sanding.

A couple more pieces of brass etch have been added to the superstructure,  as well as construction of part of the second level. Not yet fixed in place as it will stand on a brass etch piece of decking yet to be fitted.

I think a few pieces of brass etch and castings to be added to the lower level of the super structure, and then I can think about painting the hull.

    Hello all!

The rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated!

Its been a busy year with wedding, honeymoon and then Christmas and a new job. Most of my free time has been absorbed in working on our garden, which is getting an extensive landscaping, and we still have stuff everywhere after well over a year in the new house!

Got round to having a tidy up of the kitchen table and made some room to work. The Hood is so large that it needs a fair amount of room!

I've started to lay down the 7" armour band using polyethylene sheet on the port side of the ship.

Also glued in place two sheets of brass etch on the super structure.

I'll try and ensure some better progress going forward.

Still looking for issue 119 btw....

    Hello all,

It's been a little while so apologies everyone. Very busy with work and life but I've been chipping in with 30 mins here and there most days.

I've gone slightly off the order of the magazines and skipped to issues 70 odd to pick up the bow pieces and finish the second planking upto the superstructure. Done huge amounts of sanding and filling and there is a fair bit to go as there are still some bumps and dips to sort before even considering painting. Will also be adding a couple of soaks of diluted PVA to really set the second planking solid and avoid any little chips and dings.

I also now need to start looking at the details of the hull and check the dimensions and plating etc. Want to be able to adjust now before too much else has been added.

Finally started adding some of the superstructure along with starting on adding some of the photoetch brass. I want to be able to get to the point where the hull and the first layer of superstructure are ready at the same time to be painted all in one go. After that decking and additional details can be added and the decks built up.

    Hi all,

It's been a busy couple of weeks both in and out of the shipyard but managed to put in at least a half hour session each evening and some more at the weekends. Next major milestone has been reached and I have completed laying the first planking layer bringing me up to the end of issue 28.

Given that there will be second planking over the top I have not been spectacularly precious about making the planking flawless and fit with no gaps. Therefore it has been pretty easy to complete without shaping of planks. However, given the hull is fairly simple anyway it hasn't been an issue and it has been nice to not have to constantly reshape planks and fit stealers and drop planks.

Next step will be a combination of a LOT of sanding and filling the gaps with PVA. My thinking here is that the sanding dust should mix nicely with the PVA in gaps to effectively fill them in. After that I will paint the entire hull in a PVA-water mix to strengthen the planking. This should give a solid hull ready for second planking.

Hopefully tomorrow wont be as wet as today and I can make a start on the sanding.

I've slightly lied and decided to follow the order of the magazines for the time being. I'm now up to issue 21. The decks at the bow and stern are now fixed in place, with the only removable section now in the middle holding the superstructure.

I've now added the basic skeleton for level one of the superstructure. It's several sections of plywood fixed together but still loose from the deck. The sections are then removed and the corners are sanded round. Later etched brass is added to give some details to the bulkheads and doorways etc.

The next few issues will be starting the planking of the hull. I need to do a fair bit of sanding first though; the deck needs smoothing and then I need to do a bit of fairing on the frames. At least it wont be as drastic as the tall ships need to be near the bows.

Oh and it looks like the ship's cat is slacking off. Hope rats don't get in the stores......

    Hi all!

It's been a busy week and finally got the last of our stuff out of the old house and handed the keys back to the letting agents yesterday.

However still managed to find 20 mins here and there everyday to keep the hood build going. All the frames are complete and I've glued the main skeleton of the build together. Lego blocks and clamps were used to make sure everything was as true as possible. The build has also been screwed a base board to keep everything in place during planking.

I've tested the frame positioning with the deck pieces and everything is largely correctly in place. A few of the deck pieces will need a little extra sanding to get a nice fit, and a couple of the pieces are ever so slightly warped so they will need a little soak and reshaping.

This takes care of the first 10 issues or so. The next few issues start deviating to parts of the superstructure but I may skip and proceed straight to planking the hull. I just need to do some reading ahead and make sure that nothing is missed.

    Further updates to follow....!

I've completed a few of the frames now and started doing a dry fit along with a few side brace pieces. Fits together very well. I'll probably complete most of the frames and dry fit the majority of the skeleton of the hull before committing to gluing it together, but so far so good.

Next part of the build involves assembling and gluing the various frames together. The build has the option of having a removable deck if you want to build as a remote control model. I am not going down the RC option but I will leave the deck pieces removable for the moment to allow flexibility.

To allow for a removable deck, wood blocks are glued to the frame and a deck support then sits in the subsequent cradle that is produced and can be removed as required.

    Hi all,

It's been a while but we are now largely moved into our new house. No major problems apart from the usual hiccups with a house move and now an extensive list of redecoration wishes....

The workshop will take a while to get into any useable form, if only because I need to go through planning permission rigmarole before I make any changes. Technically, it is a car port at the moment as it is open to the elements on two sides. To enclose fully as a 'garage' requires PP from local council.

In the meantime, the kitchen diner table has been commandeered and will do nicely for now.

I don't have any actual build progress to report unfortunately but I do now have a confirmed move date of April 1st. Hopefully, I can find a temporary building area whilst I install my workshop.

In the meantime I have been busy collecting issues of the magazine and I now have 128 out of 140. I have been through all of them and filed the magazines and boxed up all the parts. I have pretty much two lever arch folders full and a packing box full of wood, plastic and metal parts.

I have also got a hold of a copy of Anatomy of the Ship for the Hood. And finally bought a cheap and cheerful 1:720 scale plastic Hood model. I have put it together to give me a nice little reference point, even if it isn't highly accurate.

    Unfortunately two reasons why not.

    1) I need parts 1-7 which are the bottom keel section and main ribs
    2) I'm moving in just over two weeks and now packing up the house
So I will continue teasing for a little while!

I think locating the magazine editions is going to be as big a part as the build log. However, I have had a very productive afternoon and actually saved a fair bit of money. A supplier on eBay listed a huge number of back issues and I've managed to grab another 78 issues for £3 each.

I'm going to get a few big deliveries....!

Success! Just managed to win issues 8 to 19. With each issue as a separate item to bid on, with a 40 second gap between the end of each item, it was a slightly frenetic 10 minutes!

That gives me a good block of issues to start with now but the hunt will continue.....!

    Hello all,

I am taking a bit of a gamble and going to attempt the Hachette partworks model of HMS Hood. I say a gamble because this was first published four years ago and I will be purchasing editions of the magazine from eBay, Gumtree and other assorted online resources. I think locating and buying the editions will be as much of a challenge as building the ship itself!

I have today managed to buy issues 1-7 and 26-32 from a supplier on eBay for £3 each. I also have a beady eye on listings from 8-19 which are on a bidding basis ending tonight. Watch this space! Of course if any of you are desperate to donate / sell any unwanted editions this would be very welcome.

As some of you know I am in the process of moving house (eventually) and so I suspect actual construction will probably be delayed until I move and build my new workshop but I will try and squeeze something in before then if I can.

Unfortunately space is at a big premium at the moment.

Living in a bungalow with two small children, so massively struggling and having to have a clear out.

A bigger house is only on the horizon once youngest leaves nursery and I actually have money again, so at least 2-3 years time.

However, once that happens I am very much looking forward to polishing off my snake build (that is staying come what may!) and then moving onto a Diana, Agamemnon or even Victory.
