Well the crew finally got the hull painted above the waterline with Liquitex Basic Acrylic Fluid “Neutral Gray”. Joining the war getting closer by the day. Next on preparation for finish is installation of antenna wire needed to receive necessary info that can only be decoded by our top secret enigma decoder, railings and the on deck bow cutwater needed when submerged. Future necessary painting before finishing and prior to launch are the bow torpedo tube doors. And final weathering of the hull so it appears that we actually have been engaged all the time. Well the crew finally got some color to the hull above the waterline after masking the area. We all pray the sea gull stays out of the paint. Update 11:00 The Admiral

Tom I forgot to add aways remember that when things go really bad “A little plaster and a little paint make things look like what they ain’t”. If you adhere to that saying after the repair you will definitely feel better. We have all been there many times in a build. Best Again Rick

Looks great for your second wood project One of the advantages over plastic is that the glue doesn’t melt it and leave an unsightly surface. Also remember with wood you are basically building a small ship and if you make a mistake it can be corrected even if it requires dismantling the entire area by any means necessary. Wecome to MSW. I think you will find wooden ship modeling very rewarding but addicting. You are a close neighbor. I live in Lanesboro Ma and like you I have been modeling since I was a kid. Air brushing tip. When not using the magnetic clips for small parts so they don’t blow around double sided Alien tape works great.

While waiting for paint to dry one crew member my granddaughter started working on the name and a berth for the ship as it waits to join the war. My only problem today is “She has a Screw loose”. The rest of the crew took the afternoon off and headed to the local bar. Update 14:00 hours The Admiral

From Rick to Rick Absolutely fantastic build!! When I built Model Shipways USS Niagara I felt just like you and Keith that the rigging would never end. Many times I swore to myself that I would never rig another ship again. But I didn’t hold true to my promise. It was like the molar root canal that you prayed the filing would just get over and wished you never got involved in it. Such a great deal of satisfaction when you finally finished it. The crew fine sanded the cut water and masked the upper hull prior to painting. I have done autobody restoration for years and found that materials used in autobody work extremely well if not better than what hobby shops offer for model finishing. The yellow auto masking tape is cheap, stretches on curves and is far superior to regular masking tape and does not leave any film when removed. Anyone who is a very serious modeler should check out auto body supplies. Next up having the crew paint the lower hull before the sun goes down. Remember the war waits for no one. Best the Admiral

Sun is just coming up with light snow in the sub shipyard. Crew is working on the waterline. 1/16” 3M Vinyl masking tape has been applied over the black painted yesterday. The tape was then painted over with the same black to seal it and set aside to dry. When dry the crew will paint the hull bottom dark red. A brass cutwater was added to the bow and blended with the hull with red spot putty. Morning update from the Admiral

From the sub shipyard. U-47 in dry dock on 1-2-3 blocks (A very useful hobby tool) in primer before fine sanding and marking the waterline. Updated report from the Admiral

Well it’s been a busy day in the sub shipyard. Christmas should hav been a day of celebration but with the war raging we must get U-47 together. My First Mate actually got up early and we accomplished a lot. It was a day fabricating propulsion and navigation. Except for a few disasters (a lost propeller a a few pieces o brass support structure breaking and requiring solder repair) all went well. Were finally up to paint tomorrow. Hope all my crew had a wonderful Christmas! Admiral Rick

Merry Christmas from the U-47 shipyard to all my crew. Since we will soon be heading to war it’s time to arm the sub. Fabricating the guns was a traumatic experience. They were beyond difficult. As a side note the Amati brass was beautiful but not much can be said for their molded plastic. Awful is too nice a word for it. In fabricating the guns almost all the very small parts had to be drilled and pinned. I felt like I was back performing a very difficult dental procedure. In the end the guns turned out great after airbrushing. As usual my first mate supervised all procedures and had her hands and nose where they didn’t belong. As usual couldn’t get the First Mate up to help so started priming the conning tower and periscope. After priming noticed a few areas needing touch up before final color coat and assembly of the tower. Admiral Rick

Spent a few hours working on the conning tower today involving intricate periscope fabrication and hatch and radar fabrication. All went well until the first mate (better known as the BOSS) supervised the work. After her praise decided it’s time to call it a day while being ahead. Admiral Rick

While perusing eBay looking at models I found a Phil boat a paper submarine. Something for me to think about as a future build if I ever get into paper models. I am enjoying my submarine build and sub history is interesting. How many people remember a 50’s tv show “ Run Silent Run Deep”. As. A kid I enjoyed it. Rick
