  1. Tom the spray booth comes with the duct and flared end that goes in a window. My isn’t ducked to the out side because I only spray acrylic paints and not oil based. I use the booth with the exhaust. Fan on to draw any mist into the filter in the back of the unit. Acrylic paints have almost no smell and are considered quite safe. If you are worried you could wear a mask like used when you spray a car. Artists and tee Shirt artists use acrylic paint and spray it indoors without a spray booth. I hoped I answered you question I did auto restoration for years and Urethane car paints are highly toxic and require positive pressure masks Admiral Rick

  3. Update 15:00 hours In anticipation of the approaching launch I went out and got plastered I mean painted. Hopefully in the state I am in I can make it up on the conning tower to address my crew. Admiral Rick
  4. Look at an Iwata hp-cs airbrush you won’t be disappointed. They are a little pricey( around $175) but if you keep looking you can find a new one for about $100. Also if you see a nice used one since we live close I can rebuild it with you. Probably the only part you may have to get is a new needle. You can spray acrylic paints inside safely and you can get a small spray booth with lights, and air exhaust for around $60. To me it is the only way to paint. Just takes 3or4 practices to develop your skills. Stay away from airbrushes in the $30 range a complete waste of money. You will also need a small compressor. When you get to this point let me know. I just bought this airbrush for my son who is just getting into the hobby. Rick
  5. Welcome Alexa Your first build is great and can only get better. I build by 3 beliefs: A quitter never wins and a winner never quits. You only learn from your mistakes and not from your successes. A little plaster and a little paint will make things look like what they ain’t. Good luck on your adventure. Best Rick
  6. Painting looks great Tom. I find painting can sometimes be the most difficult part of the build. I use Liquitex Basic Acrylic Fluid and Liquitex Gesso for primer which leaves almost no brush strokes when it dries. Liquitex is professional artists paint and available at Michaels. I also like to paint the hulls with an airbrush which leaves no brush strokes and is great when painting water lines because it almost goes on dry so there is very little bleeding. Also 3M automotive masking tape works a hell of a lot better than regular masking tape and doesn’t leave residue on the surface. Best Rick
  7. GOOD LUCK! Setting goals definitely helps except when you don’t meet them. Many times I have been on both sides of goal setting and I am sure you have to. Rick
  8. Terry I just noticed that we joined MSW 9 days apart. No wonder we get along so well. Rick
  9. The Plano Case is cheep and you can arrange it any way you want. I used to hunt thru that dam plastic container and swear then I finally looked for an answer and when I found this case it worked out perfectly. This morning it took about 15 minutes to put all the parts in it and I am ready to start. Remember when I sent you the wheel well I have 4 containers that hold 100s of parts. These containers I got at Walmart for $7. If any of my U-47 crew need something they can’t find, message me I might have it and Peter on eBay is also a great source. I look on eBay under model ship parts lot and if I see a lot very very very reasonable I will buy it When ever I am in a build and I drop a part (the last one) I can usually find a replacement in one of the containers. Best Admiral Rick
  10. Terry I am Getting ready to start Bluenose build and getting excited. Separated all little bags into compartments in the Plano Case. Nothing I hate more than looking for parts in that dam round container Model Shipways puts them in. This container is great because the separators can be adjusted to size. Will start the builds as soon as I totally finish U-47. All it needs is to be mounted and Snorting Bull emblems on the conning tower. I was hoping they would come In tomorrow but I found out tomorrow is a holiday so I should finish it some day this week and then start Bluenose. Admiral Rick
  11. Ellie Another suggestion if you are going to continue with this hobby buy a micro handheld drill. I have had mine for 4+ years and use it every day atleast 8times or more. You can drill precise micro holes., grind and enlarge holes clean around cemented parts and any use can think of. It comes with about 18 diamond burs for engraving, drills a mandrel with 3 saw blades and a power cord for charging. You hold it like a pen and multiple size drills from.06 mm on up. They are readily availably on eBay cheap Just make sure they have a 2.35 mm shank because the chuck is friction fit. Now that I sang this micro drills praises sit down. It all can be yours on eBay for around $21. Admiral Rick
  12. Update 18:00 hours Chief Torpedo Mate Terry I give you the privilege to Shanghai Crewman Ellie to assist you in the Torpedo Room directly under your supervision and guidance in preparation for launch. Admiral Rick
  13. Hey both of yous get.back to work so I can follow your builds. Terry and Ellie both of your builds are coming along great!! Terry good news I should be starting Bluenose next week now that i finished Bluenose repair from the 30lb rampaging rouge Maine Tabby Coon and as soon as the Snorting Bull Emblems come in and are applied ( coming in Monday ) to U-47 Conning Tower. Up to around 1941 German subs did not carry #’s (until around the time the US was entering the war) only carried Emblems. Finding the decals short of fabricating the antenna was the toughest part of the build. As said before get back to work. Best Admiral Rick
  14. Tom go to an automotive store and pick up tack cloths and rub them over the area to be painted and they pick off your model anything that don’t belong there ( ie dust saw dust residue hair etc. things that air won’t remove. Tack cloths are used when prepping a vehicle prior to painting. Auto Body supply’s are great for models just on a smaller scale. They are cheaper and better than what you can get in a hobby shop. Things that are great to get : automotive 3M masking tape yellow leaves no residue on the surface like masking tape, and red Bondo Spot Putty to correct minor Imperfections sets fast and sands to a feather edge. Tom as you progress get an airbrush and spray acrylic paints ( non toxic ) and not a health hazard and you can spray them indoors. All the best and good luck painting! Rick
  15. Update 16:30 hours The n Bluenose is finally repaired and the crew is returning back home to prepare U-47 for launch. NO SIGN OF THE MAURAUDING FELINE!
  16. The hunt for the 30lb feline marauder continues leaving the U-47 crew free to assist in the repair of Bluenose since they are both in dry dock next to each other. First Mate James reported that the feline marauder has been spotted in the immediate area and we are hoping for a quick kill so we can return to U-47’s launch and the party that follows. . Repair on Bluenose is almost complete. Both U-47 and Bluenose were savagely attacked and luckily he left Picket Boat #1 alone. Admiral Rick
  17. When we have the post launch party we will give James a watch to honor his promotion. It just happens to be taken from a Russian submarine officer. (Found it in my watch collection and is a cheap replica and thought it would fit the narrative. I only bought it years ago because of its nautical theme). lets honor him in his promotion. Admiral Rick
  18. Tom it looks beyond great. Every little trick you are learning will help you on your next build and your knowledge of wood ship modeling will make each build faster and easier. In place of wax paper you can mask anything with 3M yellow automotive masking tape if you don’t want paint, filler or anything you are using to control and protect the part. The reason I recommend automotive masking is that it strips off easily and doesn’t leave any adhesive residue that regular masking tape would leave which can affect the surface especially if it is painted. keep up the great work. Rick
  19. There is a reward placed on this rampaging 30lb Maine Tabby Coon’s head. 10,000 Deutsche Marks after all the damage was done. Admiral Rick
  20. You will love it. Best hobby tool I own. When I said I use it multiple times every day how true for so many different things besides drilling. 4 years and it never failed means works as well as the day I got it. If you look on eBay or Amazon order some more drill bits that you think you will need, especially the smallest diameter ones. Make sure they have a 2.35mm shank. Being a Dentist I have done a lot of drilling in my life and enjoy this drill more than my high speed handpiece. When you get it and use it let me know what you think. Best Rick
