  1. Lazy day today. Worked on the railings on the conning tower and compass preparation. I definitely found it less stressful and more productive than yesterday. Admiral Rick
  2. Welcome aboard second time around. Best Rick
  3. Ellie that gap can easily be filled with a wood strip and modeling paste or just modeling paste you can get at Michaels. I my opinion it’s far better and cheaper as a filler than Model Lite or Plastic Wood. It also doesn’t have an obnoxious smell and it hardens and sands great. Modeling paste can also be sculptured. The planking looks great. As Terry said with filler and if you are planning on painting the hull I see no need to do a second planking unless you want the practice. Filler and paint can work miracles My father always said “ a little plaster and a little paint can make things look like what they ain’t. Best Rick
  4. Thanks Terry. If I live through the rail fabrication it will turn out to be a great model. Echo and I love admiring our work. Rick
  5. My first mate and I would rather have hand me downs than hand rails. Both the steps and rails are a pain in the you know what. As said earlier the rail placement is very very tedious requiring a numerous amount of straightening prior to cementation ( very thin and delicate and pray they don’t break). The steps that come with the kit were impossible to work with. They were difficult to remove from the sheet and impossible to work with also. I opted to make all 10 from brass wire and they came out great. Far better than those supplied with the kit which were tiny thin and flat. Round wire of about the same gauge was far superior. Even though I’m complaining the bras in the kit is beautiful! So far so good but for my mental health signing off until tomorrow. Admiral Rick
  6. Terry and Ellie arbor bands on a mandrel and a rotary dremel is a must have for for all quick shaping down to close tolerances. It takes hours off your work. When you are real close just finish with minimal hand sanding. Also great for making the rabbet before attaching the keel. See below what you can get done in about a minute. As always best Rick (The admiral)
  7. Hi again Ellie I went to Dental School at the University of Maryland in downtown Baltimore. It’s a wonderful and beautiful ethnic city. I did a residency at Hopkins and Baltimore City Hospital back in the 70’s. You are very lucky because when your skills develop you can build Model Shipways Pride Of Baltimore and tour it as you build it. I have it and it’s on my list of builds if I live long enough. As you notice I am definitely ADDICTED. All the Best Rick (now under the alias Admiral Rick)
  8. Well after a day of repairing the sub we are now ready to resume the build I mean adventure. I would like to introduce my first mate my granddaughter Echo. Time for us to turn in for the night. Admiral Rick
  9. Welcome Ellie Enjoy It and when it is finished look back at the pride of the accomplishment and the joy the build gave you without asking anything in return. Those feelings will never go away and with each successive build will only increase. Watch out because it’s like a drug and can be addicting. There is a wealth of knowledge here all you need to do is ask. View Terrys Endeavour Log it will get your blood going. Best Rick
  10. Suns up I’m up and U-47 begging to be sanded and spot filled. The war is still on wait. After filling and sanding the best fille for any minor imperfections is auto body spot putty. It works and feathers great. Best Admiral Rick
  11. Also a very warm Welcome Andy. You won’t be disappointed there definitely is a wealth of knowledge here and all you have to do is ask. Best Rick
  12. Well the first mate and I completed some extensive repairs before actually getting into resuming the build. Most of today was spent dealing with deck and intake ports (gluing filling sanding and soldering). Depending on the length of time the build takes it looks like it will be a while before we set tosea. Signing off for the night. Admiral Rickii )
  13. Bandits are faster and more honest than USPS. STILL DUE TO ARRIVE BY THE END OF THE WEEK. I HOPE! I JUST SIGNED YOU ON THE CREW AS SECOND MATE. ADMIRAL Rick
  14. Hi Yves The kit came with extensive amount of photo etched brass detail. All the guns are individual small plastic kits etc. I ordered yesterday a book that made U-47 famous. By the way since you are following the build you are part of the crew. All the Best Admiral Rick
  15. Before we can get back to the war a lot of build and repair ahead. Stripped off as much of the brass I could that needed straightening and a minor repair to the brass substructure. Just finished checking out the repairs. My mate and I signing off for the night. Admiral Rick
  16. Welcome Phil looks like I am going to have a great Crew. Always remember my granddaughter is the first mate. Admiral Rick
  17. Thanks Dan. Since it is a Vintage Kit I’m sure that the price was inflated. I looked it up on eBay and it’s for sale in the $400-700 range. From what I remember I thought it was a pretty impressive kit and it has my attention. You’re welcome aboard on our adventure. Best from Admiral Rick
  18. Received this model as a Xmas present many years ago. As a lot of modelers due lost interest and filed it in a dark closet. After finishing USN Picket Boat #1 and waiting for Model Shipways Bluenose to come in and sitting around getting bored I entertained either resuming USS Constitution or watching TV. When I found U-Boat 47 I decided to resurrect the build. There is only 1 build logged in 2015. The kit looks complete but the hull has sustained very minor damage. There is an extensive amount of photo etched brass. The Model Shipways acrylic paint is dried up which is no problem because loggers who followed my last builds know I much prefer Liquitex Basic Acrylic Fluid paints. The time has come to go under the sea and I invite all loggers to join me and my granddaughter on our next ADVENTURE!!! As always Best Rick
  19. I don’t think there is anything in the file. When I posted something malfunctioned and wouldn’t let me post then I shut my phone down and when I opened it what I wrote had posted. I would build model cars and go down in the cellar and shoot them with my Beebee gun. Also flew line controlled cox planes. I was flying a P-40 Flying Tiger line controlled and for some reason it turned and almost took my head off. Like you I restored cars, cuckoo clocks and as you said you name it. As I said my grandson never built a model. What a shame. With computers kids can’t even add anymore. I lived without video games as a child and definitely had more fun. When they get to my age hopefully they will remember things like we mentioned and not just the video games they won. A friend Rick
  20. I like the way you planked the fantail. It looks great. The endeavour I have has a composite hull. I ordered and sent one to my son so my grandson and I with my son’s help can build it together on face time. My grandson is on a sailing race team (he’s 12 years old)but I don’t think he has ever built a model. He’s missing out on one of the best things in life for developing skills, pride, satisfaction and self esteem. Time for that to change. I don’t know about you but I grew up building Rebel model cars and Comet wooden airplanes. Should be a great experience for him my son and me. Your Endeavour is coming along great. Looks like I will be building 3 at the same time. I think I have an addiction!!!!!!! Best Rick
  21. From Rick to Rick Thanks From the log narrative, my granddaughters accompaniment to the actual build it was fun and enjoyable. Rick from one DDS to another it was a hell of alot better than working in a mouth. You are welcome to join my granddaughter and myself on our next journey to the far ends of the WORLD. Rick
  22. Thanks Bob Welcome aboard my next adventure. if you choose to join the journey. It’s on the drawing boards in Nova Scotia. Soon to be built by some old FOOL. Guess which one. Best Rick
  23. Thanks Grant your compliments are highly appreciated. Hope you join my granddaughter and me on our next journey to the far ends of the WORLD! Best Rick
