your very welcome Pete.......well deserved.  there's a lot of educational value in these kits......you just have to look beyond the laser cuts.

Midwest is a very nice kit....they're one of the few kits that have actual plans in them.   many hull designs hold clues in how other designs came into being.   for most of them,  just modifying the stern {as you did} can make all the difference in the world.  another aspect to think about,  is the period in which you model your build.   it can be done in early time,  when lobstering was done using primitive methods,  or a more up to date vessel, using modern methods.  to digress a bit.....as I wrote this,  I thought of the way in which I used the word  'primitive'  and I had quite a comical muse of how it was done

nuts......is a loose term indicating a loss of sanity,  or a person who is crazy {oops,  I let another one slip} about whatever they do.  now,  where would the world be,  without imagination.  welcome to the world of wonder

Thank you Popeye, I greatly appreciate it. As I started on the kit I realized that there was a jewel hiding inside it .  I wanted to capture the beauty of the transom on my build.( to me this is the key to the boat)  I got the offset table from the Chapelle drawings of the boat and Lofted it out to scale . this gave me a better understanding of the boats Design and allowed me to expand on it  .So I took it a step further with a working retractable centerboard and working Rudder ( Keel #4 ) and I also opened up frames 1 and 2 (its on my scratch build log for Keels 3 & 4 ) I have been having alot of fun building these and if that makes me nuts I am ok with that

    Best Regards,
    Pete

Keith, I was going to answer but John and Frankie beat me to it.  Thanks friends.

Tom, I bought 1/8” plywood for the profile and bulkheads.  As for the larger slots, yes they are the masts and the foremost is for the Sampson post which would not have to go below decks on a model but I put the slot in anyway.  The rake of the masts is shown on the inner profile drawings.

Popeye, Michael & Augie thanks for the well wishes.  And yes, Popeye I have copies of the bulkhead drawings I made.

Finally!  I made sawdust today.  I cut the parts out on the skill saw now I need to go back and sand to the line, but it feels good to get started.  I should mark the date somewhere, like in the records of ships where you see, “KEEL LAID ON:” Dec 18, 2013.

I decided to go POB for this boat.  You can see my CAD drawing on letter size paper in the picture.  The box with the 2” inside gives me the size to enlarge to.  If anyone wants a copy let me know.

Thanks John and Bob for stopping by.

This evening I replaced the fife rail with a slightly longer one with shaped ends it is hard maple.

    The first rail

    And the new one

The new one has a greater scope for operation.

I have also begun shaping the forward hatch, it will have a pair of lights that will hinge up.

First thank you all for your kind remarks, and all the likes.

    New Cockpit part 4

Regarding the deck oxidation at the moment there is no surface treatment on it it is just a scraped finish, so a final scraping before applying the teak oil should take care of it.

I have begun gluing together the boards for the flat areas of the cockpit these have a micro bevel on all four edges this will need a little touching up before the final varnish.

The corners have been rough sanded to shape now, when all the walls are complete and glued together I will make the cap by laminating a few .020" veneers together around  formers for the corners when it is shaped and finished it will be stronger than a bent piece and will look like a solid piece. similar to this bent piece as part of a wicker seat which was made by bending a group of veneers around a stainless steel strip and gluing them. After they had set up they were removed from the strip then shaped with files and sanded.

The next picture shows the top edge of the flat section.

I will need to make a new grating for the floor or rework the edges with some new boards.

    Michael

Here is the completed Midwest Products "The Fantail Launch II". All that remains is to install the radio control equipment. Thanks to those who followed my build and gave kind or encouraging words and helpful advice along the way.

Well I got the the water line painted and it sure looks goofy to me from certain angles but it's placed where the plan and the finished model on the box indicates. The next steps are to glue the flags to the bow and stern, install the rudder and then the radio gear. Over all I am very pleased with the model.

Thanks Pete, I love building boats, I'm glad I got into this hobby. These easier boats are a lot of fun but I'm hoping to dig out my "tall ships" again soon too and challenge myself more. Loving this hobby.

to stay within the subject is a very hard thing to do.   I know first hand with the Maine lobster boat.   you've shown how versatile this hull design can be.......even for you daughter...her pleasure boat    to experiment and expand on any given subject,  for that matter,  is an element of this hobby,  that I find the most rewarding.  what you see though your  'mind's eye'  is well displayed through what started from a single kit.   I thought I was the only one nuts enough to try a multi build like this......you decide to go one more than me.....now I'm jealous.

you've done a superb job Pete.......imagination and creativity are a precious commodity.......spend it well on every build you do!

Keel #1 is now complete. My daughter came over this morning, as I was getting ready to install the Fish Well covers . And she said that she liked it better without the covers as they cover up to much of the deck. (its going to be her's she does not know it yet ) so they have been left off. this is about the end of this build log . Just some comparisons between the Kit and scratch (Keel 1 ) are left . Here are the results

Today all the work was done on Keel 1 , I the blocks that I stained yesterday , and using the same wrapping of the blocks with string (I showed how I made them in a previous build log)I made up all thge blocks needed Then I made a new tiller and still have to finish it ( its just been rough cut) all the masting is complete with the exception of the Boom being installed . I purchased some better thread for all the running rigging (it looks more like rope) The mast is set , the only thing left to make is the fish well covers . I am also giving a few comparison shot's between the kit build ( White Hull dark Cockpit/Cabin Coaming) Here are the results

Today on Keel 1,I got started by doing all the small touch up work. I then decided to paint a blue water line on Keel 2 ( I could not get it to work on Keel 1 ) it worked out on this one. I then removed the deck over the fish wells to gain access to the bilge( I may float this one) Here are the results

I realized this morning that Thanksgiving was this week , So I jumped on it and got the Kit build finished, I did change a few things, like the block location on the boom, The Main sheet should come from aft not over the top . I also used a fat paperclip for the traveler and used a sharpie on it . I added a moring line with a pancake on the end ( I learned how to do that here on M.S.W. ) here are the results

As the Holidays  approach , the build time becomes less time. On Keel  # 3  I installed the deck and trimmed the excess wood off the transom ,I then Installed my make shift rudder and tiller to make sure all is functioning properly, ( It does) and that tiller and rudder can be easily installed and removed from the boat  . (also works well)I also cut out for the companion way hatch so you can now see the figured Birch on frame 1. Here are the results
