Thanks for the heads up marktime. I'll go back and get them squared away.

After completing some parts of the build I decided to change what the kit provided such as adding chains instead of brass banding and modifying some of the railing, etc. I spent a good deal of time reviewing other builds to get ideas for improving mine.

Thank you marktime. Some of you have done a good job setting the bar for this build.

The Bounty was not the smashing success I had hoped for but it did fuel the fire. My second try, the Santa Maria, will be bigger and more complicated and I have a childlike excitement going into the build. I have lots of new tools to play with and the kit came with gadgets and gizmos galore so I'm in hobby heaven. Progress is slow and the build logs are a great resource. I really appreciate the time that some have taken to to share their knowledge and experience.

I had this piece of driftwood and thought it might make an interesting display stand. I think I was right. I think the display might be a very big part of the build.

I did not like the white sails that came with the kit so I tried a few custom colors and decided on black. I know, but this one is mine and I like it better. And it is my first build.

Starting out with a small scale build was a very wise choice. I seem to be spending a great deal of time tearing down and rebuilding. (He says with a smile.) The instructions, to my mind, leave a great deal to be desired and the right tools are an absolute necessity. I'm sure that any small amount of knowledge on the subject of ships would be helpful as well. All in all I'm finding the build to be thoroughly enjoyable and challenging and I am confident I will arrive at its end with a handsome ship that I will proudly display (with any defects carefully camouflaged).

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
