hexnut reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
The lanterns on the stern were made of cardboard and thick foils, included plenty of hand made ornaments from modeling clay/I use Czech product Modelit/Modurit for all decorations on my the model. I have decided to create a different shape of lanterns ( in comparison with Vale´s painting). I have found inspiration in Sailmaker painting of The Royal Katherine and other similar ships from that period.
Sailmaker painting of the Royal Katherine:

Wooden catheads with detailed decoration:

The decorative railings to the staircase platforms was set into wooden frames and moved to the model:
And finally there were made staircases with rounded steps:

The work continued on the decoration of the bulkheads again, which I made according to original models from that period.

Hello dear friends,
first I must apologize I was not here for a long time and didn't let you know about the progress. I have only little free time for hobbies and try to continue on Czech forum at least. I am sorry that I am not able to answer all your questions - mainly duplicate questions, that were answered and explained in detail many times - I cannot devote myself to it, otherwise I would not have any time for anything else. It is also quite difficult for me write in English language and use correct expressions.
I do appreciate all your comments and strong support. Thank you all for this.
I would like to bring some new pics from continuation, so make yourself comfortable and enjoy.
I managed to remove the model from pedestals and paint the underwater part of the hull with protective white stuff. In that occasion there were raised "dolphins pedestals" using wooden base. The girdling almost disappeared, but you can still recognize a different method of laying the planks.

Dear friends,
thank you very much for your praise and kind words, I do appreciate your support a lot. I am pleased, you enjoy the pics and like my work.
Oh you mean this... Well I usually leave my signature on the frame/main rib. But on my older scratch-build model Sovereign of the Seas stayed my tears, cause I had some accidents and was sad also because of the problems and disappointment that life brought to me then....

I have decided to improve decoration on the bow section and make larger/wider sculptures to achieve more realistic appearance. Lower pieces of decoration are completely new and they overlap the upper cheeks as you can see on many museum models from that period. I believe, this decision was good.
Enjoy the pics and have a good time.

Hello dear friends,
I am very grateful for your support and comments, your words mean a lot for me. I'm flattered and do appreciate your praise. Thank you all very much.
I believe the Royal Katherine will be my best card model after finishing, but there are several things and details I should improve in the model and during the build I try to correct or do them better. I do not continue very fast although want to add something new on the model as often as possible.
Well, I try to do realistic model, but have to say, it is really hard. Next time I am going to relax and build something according to complete building plans. The Royal Katherine is the most chalenging project I have ever realized.
Wefalck: Plenty of my tutorials and videos have been posted here, so please look through my thread. I am going to add others in the future.
I don't have experience with other materials, so I can't recommend anything else. I am satisfied with this one I use.
I build card models more than 30 years.I am not sure if I understand well your second question ( unfortunately my English is not very good), but I try to devote my greatest effort to all parts of the model. I usually put also a "part of myself" into building these models - not only my modelling skills, but also "emotion" and "love".

The belfry is finished and now I am continuing with other pieces of decoration on another railing... I try to create it according to museum models from that period to achieve more realistic result. Unfortunately there are no exact plans or drawings of these parts of the Royal Katherine, so I have to improvise a bit.....😉
Enjoy the pics and have a great time.
Best regards,
Doris

Here are current pics. I tried to create these pieces of decoration according to museum models from that period but wanted to achieve unique/original design as well.

Wow - has it really been 2 years?
I finally decided that the only way I could move on was by not doing any more planking. Since she is in the yard being repaired for the display I stopped where I thought it looked good and started the painting. I plan to weather it some and then continue construction.

There were also added brass rings on the sides of gun ports for rigging and tackles. I finished other railing on bulkheads. The crew members come from yacht Royal Caroline and were made in a scale 1/40. They are here only for a short time for an excursion...😄

The low railing is completely made of wood due to its higher strength:

And another bulkhead completed and placed in model.... The brass bell is not my own product, it is one of few things on the model I have purchased as finished accessory.

Placing the largest guns "cannon-of-seven" in the hull.
The carriages were placed into the hull separately and then I added cannon barrels to them. It is possible to move and set them as necessary.

I have finished trimming the “Grip”...now I have to finish the skeg, guards and seats.

Started the oars, blades are cherry
I cut the frames down...
im not sure what this is called but it is also cherry...I pre-bent it as well to the shape of the plan.
I cut the oars and had enough for the night.
all thats left left is the seats, paint, shaping oars, the stand and rope.

Thank you all for the likes and compliments! It means a lot honestly. I ended up switching out some of the bass wood pieces with cherry I bought from model expo and I really like the way it is looking. I guess practice really does make you a little better each time...I’ve enjoyed this model very much!

Trying to make sure the inwales, risers and quarter knees fit well. This is where I am trying to improve myself by taking the extra time to make sure they fit nicely.

So all planking is complete and I was very happy with the outcome. The wood in these kits is not terrible, but brittle. I would love to see the wood in a brand new kit. So instructions said to sand everything even...

I did my best to avoid excess glue, I didn’t do terrible, but I’m not sure how much less glue I could possibly loose. As soon as I squeeze it, it’s bound to ooze. I dont really want to use CA however. I guess just more practice...

Once I got the bottom two planks on (starboard and port side) I was able to remove the boat from the board without it losing its curve.

Frames got sanded at an angle and installed, this model went together quickly which was nice. I enjoy these simple kits for the quick satisfaction.
blocks come with the kit and you must set up a build board...also another reason I make a copy of the plans so I can cut one up and damage it lol.
I thought this was a great idea, but I’ll admit the board did not make it any easier, but I wanted to avoid putting tacks through the hull.

I did fix that frame, I noticed it before I glued. I have learned on my last kit (s) to dry fit before gluing and double check twice...
so I continued following the plans and instructions, making sure to take my time, these kits are perfect to try to really get everything exact.

Here is some ordnance on display and panel line accents. The photos reveal some touch ups I need to do. Funny how photos can show things that escape the naked eye.
