1813- Sailing Master Elijah Mix attempts to blow up British warship Plantagenet with a torpedo near Cape Henry, Virginia.

1915 - The steamer Eastland overturns in the Chicago River, drowning between 800 and 850 of its passengers who were heading to a picnic.       
1944 - Following 43 days of naval gunfire and air bombardment, Naval Task Force lands Marines on Tinian.

1963 - The iconic Bluenose II was launched in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The schooner is a major Canadian symbol.

2009 - The MV Arctic Sea, reportedly carrying a cargo of timber, is allegedly hijacked in the North Sea by pirates, but much speculation remains as to the actual cargo and events.

1956 - The Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria and the Swedish ocean liner Stockholm collide in a heavy Atlantic fog off the island of Nantucket on the New England coast. Fifty-one passengers and crew were killed in the collision, which ripped a great hole in the broad side of the Italian vessel Andrea Doria all 1,660 survivors were rescued from the ship before it sunk late the next morning.        

1959 - SR.N1 hovercraft crosses the English Channel from Calais, France to Dover, England in just over 2 hours.
1990 - USS Cimarron rescues 25 refugees adrift southeast of Subic Bay, Philippines.

Frigate USS St. Lawrence, Cptn. Hugh Y. Purviance, spotted a schooner flying English colors and engaged the vessel. Fleeing, the schooner then ran up the Confederate flag and fired three shots. Returning fire, St. Lawrence hit the vessel twice, once in her bow. Survivors of the sunken vessel revealed it had been the Confederate privateer, Petrel.

2000 - Judge J. Calvitt Clarke Jr. on his own accord ruled that the R.M.S. Titanic Company, who had salvage rights to the Titanic, was banned from cutting into the sunken ship and plundering the artifacts. The salvage company apparently was searching for $300 million in lost diamonds and had sold chunks of coal from the famous ship wreck.

HMS Bacchante (38), Cptn. William Hoste, and HMS Eagle (74) Cptn. Charles Rowley, destroyed the batteries at the harbour at Rovigno. Most of a convoy of 21 ships was scuttled but one gunboat armed with an 18-pounder and two armed trabaccolos laden with salt were captured.

USS President (44), John Rodgers, captures British bark Lion.

1865

CSS Shenandoah, James Waddell, encountered the British bark Barracouta in the Pacific Ocean and received the first firm report that the Civil War had ended in April with the defeat of the Confederacy. Disarming his ship, Waddell took her to surrender at Liverpool, England.

1610 - Henry Hudson sails into what is now known as Hudson Bay thinking he had made it through the Northwest Passage and reached the Pacific Ocean.

1865 - Trans Atlantic Cable being laid by SS Great Eastern snaps & is lost.

1916 - Austrian sabotage causes the sinking of the Italian battleship Leonardo da Vinci in Taranto.

1943 - PT-109, under command of LTJG John F. Kennedy, cut in half by Japanese destroyer Amagiri.
1943 - Naval task groups bombard Japanese forces on Kiska, Alaska.
1950 - Amphibious force ships land Marine First Provisional Brigade at Pusan, Korea helping to save this last area of South Korea from capture.
1964 - Three North Vietnamese PT boats attack USS Maddox (DD-731) in international waters in Gulf of Tonkin. Maddox sinks one.

1914- The German minelayer Königin Luise lays a minefield about 40 miles (64 km) off the Thames Estuary (Lowestoft). She is intercepted and sunk by the British light-cruiser HMS Amphion.
1921 - Yangtze River Patrol Force established as command under Asiatic Fleet.

1937 - Ranger (US) beats Endeavour II (England) in 17th America's Cup
1964 - Operation Pierce Arrow – American aircraft from carriers USS Ticonderoga and USS Constellation bomb North Vietnam in retaliation for strikes against U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin.
1990 - Navy and Marine Task Force (USS Saipan, USS Ponce, and USS Sumter) begin evacuation of U.S. citizens and foreign nationals from Liberia during civil war.

1805

HMS Blenheim (90), Capt. Austen Bissell, Flagship of Vice Ad. Sir Thomas Troubridge engaged Marengo andBelie Poule.

1806

HMS Dover (44) was lying alongside the dockyard wharf at Woolwich, being used as a temporary marine barracks, when she caught fire and was burnt to the water's edge.

1807

HMS Hydra (38), Cptn. George Mundy, engaged a battery protecting Principe Eugenio (16), Della Carolina(10), and Carmen Del Rosario (4) in the harbour of Begu in Catalan. The battery and the 3 polacres were taken by the ships boats.

1811

Four Danish gun-boats taken near Heligoland, but by the accidental explosion of some gunpowder, 30 English seamen and several prisoners were severely burnt or wounded.

1862

CSS Arkansas destroyed by her commanding officer Isaac N. Brown  when her engine broke down to prevent capture by USS Essex off Baton Rouge.
