Is this book as good as it looks?

Thanks,

Depends on what you are looking for.

The book describes quite a lot of ship types, and their rig. It  also shows a number of typical setups for parts of the rig. Very interesting and informatieve, so yes, it is as good as it looks.

but when you are looking for a complete and detailed drawing of the rig of a certaintype of ship (where do the various blicks go, how do the lines run, how thick are they, and where should they be belayed, it gives as good as no information. So, no, it is not very interesting and informative.

The choice is yours :)

Jan, I think I am going to get the book.

Thank you for the advice, I believe 'quite a lot of ship types' is what I need. When I narrow it down I can look for more detail of a particular type/rig.

There is so much to learn!

I got the book. As soon as I looked at the content and format it became clear this is a summary of scantlings of the era with plain language explanations to guide the modeller.

I am very glad I made the trip to the shop with the book, even though I have PDFs of some of the scantlings from that time-frame. This is what I needed: a modeller explaining the subject for the benefit of other modellers.

Thanks for the help.

For English Men of War books that covers a lot of details both Lees'  Masting and Rigging and Anderson's Rigging of ships are hard to beat for details including block and line size, run of the lines etc.

Allan

Thanks Allan, gott'em. They are great and I think this book completes the story. I have been going through some sections this afternoon and am pleased to see that most of the masts/spars I have drawn so far conform, I will have to decide what to leave and what to re-think.

I promised myself I would not buy books on impulse. I am trying, but it is so hard ....
