I've seen this section and really haven't figured this out. It sounds interesting but just what is the purpose and idea behind a group project? It really sin't explained.

My understanding is that is a space where a more than a few people are tackling a specific designated project.

On MSW it seems the projects are mostly based on getting into scratch building. In other groups (such as Reddit) I’ve seen it based on theme or even specific kits.

A group project is simply a focus group built around the construction of a particular model. It's a mutual support kind of thing, and the back-and-forth between members is all located in a single subsection of the forum rather than being sprinkled throughout all of the build logs and other areas. There's no pressure or obligation to finish the project by a deadline.
