Mast Hoops

Recommended Posts

I'm presently building my latest ship, the Benjamin Latham fishing schooner from Model Shipways and have a question about mast hoops.  Were they painted and if so what color? Also, if I decide to add sails to the ship how were they attached to the mast hoops.

I ended up blackening the hoops on my AVS being cast metal, but I believe hoops were made of wood and possibly served (wrapped) with a small diameter natural color line.

JohnB,

In Chapelle's The American Fishing Scooners 1825-1935 he states the hoops were made of Ash with 3 copper rivets each. Hope this helps.

I believe they were also tarred so they would slip easily on the mast. In MSW 1.0 there was a discussion about this. There was also several suggestions on how to make them. For my Bluenose I stitched them to the bolt rope. I also stained them a very dark walnut stain.

Current Builds - 18th Century Longboat, MS Syren

Completed Builds - MS Bluenose, Panart BatteStation Cross section, Endevour J Boat Half Hull, Windego Half Hull, R/C T37 Breezing Along, R/C Victoria 32, SolCat 18

On the shelf - Panart San Felipe, Euromodel Ajax, C.Mamoli America,

Although they are in black & white almost every picture I have seen from that period shows the hoops as lighter than the masts. The masts were pine and spruce treated with oil. So it was lighter than that. I too have read thant they were of ash which is a pale wood

I had answer the second part of your question in the previous MSW...

Thanks

Metal, no (too heavy and not necessary).

Tar, no (too sticky and not necessary)

Wood varnished or painted, yes.

Lashed to rings in the spanker sail.
