For my first build I chose AL's Virginia 1819 schooner.  It appears to be challenging but not too ambitious for a first build.

I plan to align the bulkheads and nail the false deck to them and glue it all together this week.  Next weekend starts the planking!  Any advice is welcome!

I just received this kit last week. I'm working my way up to it by way of a couple of MidWest apprentice builds.Good luck - I'll be following closely.

Hello everyone.  I spent some time this weekend nailing the false deck to the keel and frames and gluing it all together.  I also planked the deck.

Can't forget the holes for the masts:

And trimmed:

I used pencil on the edges of the planks to simulate weathered caulking.  I'm really happy with the way it turned out:

I'm planning to varnish the deck.  Can anybody recommend what type of varnish to use?  The book recommends an acrylic matte finish varnish.  I don't want to change the color of the deck.

Also, whats a good method to simulate nails on the ends of the planks?  I'm thinking of just using a pencil.  Any other thoughts?

I've started carving balsa blocks to put in the end slots between the bulkheads to make planking easier.  This week/weekend I'll start planking the hull!

The deck looks very nice. There was a build (before the crash) of this kit where the modeler used either tung oil or Danish oil for all of the finishing on this ship.

This is the first chance I've had a chance to check back on your log. You are doing a very nice job on the deck! Keep up the good work!

Thanks guys.  I've started plamking the hull.  I hope to get the first layer finished this weekend.  I'll try to put up some pics then.  It's a bear!  Tapering and placing the planks is definitely an art that will take some getting used to.  I'm just glad there are two layers!

Pete - you said you bought the Virginia, have you opened it up yet?  This is a picture of the masting on the big sheet that is provided with the kit.  It's all messed up - is yours the same way?  It's a bummer because it shows some of the mast details and rigging which I think is going to be tough for a first-timer like me.  That part of the build is still a ways off yet, but hopefully I can get the corrected picture.

Does anyone who has built this kit have an opinion as to why the instructions have you do the finish planking on the deck BEFORE you do the first planking on the hull? I can see no reason not to reverse the order to avoid scuffing up that ultra thin deck planking in the process of planking the hull. Am I missing something?

Its much easy to plank the deck without the hull in the way. Perhaps the best answer is to plank the hull below the deck; then plank the deck, and then lastly plank the hull above the deck.

Nice model for your fitst one!

Marvin,

Just to be clear - I'm not the builder doing the fine work posted here. I am just starting this model and have gotten to the point of  assembling (and fairing) the false keel/bulkhead/false deck structure.  If I understand your answer correctly, I can hold off on the deck planking as the kit has me leaving a 5mm gap between the top plank and the deck to allow for the placing of the bulwark piece.

Any more thoughts anyone? Will this leave me anough room to trim and sand the edge of the deck planking?

hello Pete. i planked the deck before the hull. you only need something soft to rest here on (lilike styro foam) when turned up side down for the planking.

I see no reason why you couldn't plank the hull before doing the deck.  It might make it a little harder to trim and sand the deck planking, but I don't think it'd be too tough.  For me, because this is my first POB ship, I think planking the deck was a nice warm up for planking the hull.  I really enjoyed planking the deck.

I've planked about half of the hull - slow progress lately.  Need to get back in the shipyard!  I'll post some pictures new soon.  Pete - do you have a build log up for your Virginia?

Posted

If this is designed similar to the Swift pilot boat it has single piece bulwarks and they start below the deck line. I planked before decking for the reason mentioned by pete. but I dont think it matters what order you do it. There are lots of nailing options, I like the one using a 0.5,, mechanical pencil and sandded graphite to imprint the cirlces that simulate the nail plugs. Can't remember who's build it was in though.

Its good to see AL add colour photos to their kits, even if they are jacked up. AL is notorious for BAD instructions. MSW is your best source for info. this looks alot like the Swift virigina pilot boat and there are several logs on it, i'm not sure on this kit though, although seems I seen some being build.

Looking good, can't wait to see planking.

MRWESQ,

No, I haven't started a build log for the 1819 Virginia (although I sort of hijacked yours) - I will post some pics of my progress so far in the next couple of days. I've hit a brick wall with my little lifeboat build, so maybe we can build this model in tandem and learn from each other.

This looks really nice.  Did you use ink or black paint to simulate caulking?  (The reason I ask is that some finishes may lift magic marker-type ink up and smear a bit--ask me how I know... )

Hexnut - I actually used pencil to simulate the caulking.  I colored the side of the planks with a 0.7 mechanical pencil.  I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

Good job on the planking!

Here are a couple updates on the planking.  I've only got about 3 planks remaining on each side until the I'm finished with the first layer of planking.  Overall I'm happy with the way it's turned out.  The planking actually goes pretty quickly once you set aside some time to sit down and work on it.

Any advice on how to trim the excess off the ends of the planks?  I'm worried about breaking the glue bonds holding them to the frame when trying to trim.

with a sharp exacto knife . gently start cutting till you get through but leave some excess that cna be easily sanded off after

I finished the first layer of planking.  Below is a picture.  Overall, I'm happy with how it turned out. There are definitely some mistakes but for a first time effort I think it came out alright.  After it dries I'll trim off the excess and sand it.  It should look much more respectable then.

Nice job on the planking!  I look forward to seeing the second layer of planks on the hull, if you do as good of a job on the second layer she will look great!  Keep up the good work!!!   :)

How did you decide on the length of the deck planks?

Pete

I made the deck planks 80mm.  That length was suggested in a book - Ship Modeling Simplified.  To get the staggered look, I alternated 40mm and 80mm lengths on the first row (the aft end).  I actually think the model's instructions just said to lay full length strips and use a pencil to simulate the shorter lengths, but this definitely looks better than that.
