Hi all,

I am building a model of the Mary Rose and am wondering if this book would be of use to me in making the model.  The book is:

Before the Mast: Life and Death Aboard the Mary Rose (The Archaeology of the Mary Rose) by Julie Gardiner

Has anyone looked through this book?

thanks!

john

Greetings Tar...

I have not read Before the Mast. However, I read the book entitled The Mary Rose by Margaret Rule, which focuses on the the actual raising and preservation of the MR. This book has some excellent pictures and drawings of the MR which may be more useful for your purpose than a book that describes ship life.

How do you like the kit? I have been considering it for a while.

thanks for the input wq!

I am working on a scratch build of Mary Rose, couldn't afford the kit. :)   It's a very interesting ship to model.  Chidokan, on the forum is building a cross section, mine will be whole hull.  Why not get the kit and join us.

Morning John. I have not read the book but a quick search yielded a good description of the book on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Before-Mast-Death-Aboard-Archaeology/dp/1842175041

From the description it doesn't sound at all technical about construction but about how the sailors lived… their tools, food, life in general. It may not give you details about how planks fit or the precise spacing on ratlines but it sounds fascinating to read about what their life was like.. and from that, who knows what  knowledge you could take away from all that.

I'm not building the ship but I am buying the book… sounds too interesting to pass up.

thanks Randy, it really does sound like a fascinating book, I am planning to do as much internal detail as I have data for and was hoping that book might help me make any interior scenes more accurate.  Let me know what you think of the book when you get it.  I have to wait at least until next months allowance rolls around before I can order it.

Mark, I am planning to do a build log.   glad to hear you are retired now!   congrats   I still have to get up there to visit you when we go to our daughters house in Iowa, maybe I can bring my Mary Rose with me. :)

thanks,

john
