Hugh...... Haven't figured out which way is up apparently. So here is where I am at currently. any and all feedback is welcome and any experiences that I have had, I am more than happy to share. This is my second kit, and I have two more kits waiting to go :ms rattlesnake and ms constitution (actually started my rattlesnake and will start that post tonight). So back to my San Fran. I am currently rigging my cannon and will start the shrouds? I think that's what they are called. So any advice or possible stumbling blocks u see coming my way let me know. Also many thanks to all those other San Fran builders on the original site I would not have gotten this far without them.

No, I am too busy with work, night school, and hobbies. I LOVE to watch hockey, I would rather go to a hockey game any day than a football game, fans are classy and respectful.  Plus its just a lot of fun to watch.

There is a culture taht goes with hockey that unless you are part of it you dont get it. Most people on the outside only see the fighting or the confusing rules, but there is so much more to it than that. Good luck to your penguins this year if crosby can keep healthy maybe youll have a shot

So the past week or so I installed the bowsprit and the shrouds (think that's what they are called). For the shrouds I simply wrapped the wire around the dead eye and applied some super glue. Seems strong. Onto rigging my cannons.post-1401-0-35323700-1362972497_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-39268500-1362972620_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-14197400-1362972564_thumb.jpg

Looks good Eric. I love the color of the mahogany, did you stain or is it a natural oil or lacquer? I also like your doors... simple but far better than the stamped metal that came with the kit IMO. I also have played with a replacement but it's not ready for a showing yet, still planking the hull.

Posted

It's a toung oil finish with a lacquer already in it. I love the look of figured wood so if at all possible i choose a wood that contrasts rather than staining. Thank you for the compliments I really question my scratch building but I can't stand the metal supplied in this kit. I think the scale is all out of whack. I'm trying to use methods or rigging to apply to my next build (ms rattlesnake) so the rigging on the cannons will reflect the ms instructions which are not period for this ship. Wish I had found this site before I begin the model. Was not until I started planking the hull with that mahogany that I sought help and by that time I had already laied my deck. Wish I would have put in tree nails and caulking.

I'm with you, I much prefer to see the natural grain and coloration of a fine wood than to stain unless I must. I also did not like some of the metal fittings so I spent the last hour or 2 creating doors. Not sure that I like them so I might go with yet another version. The thing I really want to redo is the birds-nest or whatever it's called. Those metal ones are not very attractive. That ones a bit harder tho and I haven't figured how to tackle it yet.

Posted

I thought about re-doing the birds nest but the time to do that would slow me down and I am alredy chipping away at my rattlesnake. THeir are so many san fran builders out there I am supprised that someone has not made a praticum. The model could be great with some bashing. I see great ideas from each person, and if these could be compiled, the model that would come out of it woulb be great. Also I sugest getting different rigging line, or treating the line supplied with the kit. The black line I used on the front of the ship is line I bought from nature coast. I used leather dye on it and it removed all of the fuzzies and does not bleed with glue.

So I thought it would be cool to fully rig the cannons right?post-1401-0-00771100-1363062591_thumb.jpgso as you can see FAIL. Maybe a single block with the line tied off at the bulkhead? I would appreciate any ideas

Yeah, it's a bit crowded with the ladder/steps so close. I'm not real sure what the fix could be as I haven't really thought about these steps yet.

Spent part of the day redoing the doors and then realized I made 6, forgetting about the large one on the stern. Oh well, that one will be different I guess.

I also looked into and and bought a planking iron or as the hobby shop calls it a sealing iron for attaching and smoothing the skin of a model airplane.

Holy freaking cow... how great wood bends when it is wet and being steamed by this miniature iron. Nice call, thanks!

What did you do to your cannons to blacken? Is it just flat black paint? I'm changing some color schemes and am leaning to black more than brass.

Posted (edited)

I used this gun black on all of my brass parts. 1/3 blacken 2/3 water. The cannons blackens nicely some if the othe parts required a soak in vinagar and or a buff with fine steel wool. Some of the parts had a sooty residue one them. When I buffed them with the wool and then re blackened they came out pretty dark almost like paint, some of the cannons look just like a blued gun. I prefer the black over brass looks just a little more real. Would live to see your scratch doors. post-1401-0-36043300-1363146677_thumb.jpg

Almost forgot you can get the gun black at any gun store for like $5.

So heres my single block idea (nothing glued or trimmed so their is some stray line). What does everyone think? Is it even realistic would this have been used and if so would the block be on the gun or on the bulkhead ? post-1401-0-73454700-1363148772_thumb.jpg

So for the past week I have been working on my masts. Using a file and my lathe shaped the tops. Eyeballed allot of it and at this point am crossing my fingers hoping it works out. At this point adding the rope reinforcements to the masts. Really don't like the thread supplied with this kit so I have been using thread from jotika. Dyed it black using kiwi shoe leather dye. The dye stiffens the line just a little bit and eliminates all of the fuzzies. Picked this up from volcanbommers San Fran II build on the old site. Hopping to hear some feedback on my gun rigging issue, ttyl post-1401-0-69202500-1363544297_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-25106800-1363544347_thumb.jpgpost-1401-0-77231300-1363544400_thumb.jpg

So haven't posted anything for bit because I was stuck on the gun rigging issue. Decided to just simplify the issue and eliminated the double block (boooo hissssss). I know it's a total bail on how it should be done but if I hadent moved ahead my san Fran would have ended up on a shelf. post-1401-0-87247700-1364527947_thumb.jpg

Really enjoying the rigging. My time tying flies seems to be paying off. Also need to get some decent tweezers the harbor freight ones are doing a very good job.

Hi Eric,

Glad you're putting the cannons behind you as she does deserve to be on a shelf just not like you meant... half done :)

Double blocks?? I honestly need to do more research to understand that term much less how it should be done... for what it's worth, I think the latest pic looks great!

Best advice I ever got from someone is "this is your build, do it the way that you are satisfied with. You are not building to please anyone but yourself!"

I also echo what Randy said...I will do the research when I get to that point lol.
