Actually i did the same, you will be glad that you did glue it so well because it is only part of that layer you will remove, the rest of it will be holding the planks...

Oh i forgot, Bahamas Diver and some Spanish guy i forgot the name of had a different approach to this. They removed all of the front were the scroll work shall be and kept the thickness of the scroll work parts. The problem with this solution is that it is very hard to make it fit. You will get holes between the scroll work and ship that need to be filled. I wanted to avoid this, therefore the systematically removal of layers, carving your way down so to say...

I separated the different plywood layers with a knife, scratching away one layer at a time, do not use a sandpaper, because you want to know when you have exactly one layer left, work slowly, you will get the hang of it. If i remember correctly regarding the top i left left part of the last layer to remove to get it thicker at the top. I think i posted pictures of this. After you are finished with the planking you will also have to removed two layers on the front on both sides, were the scroll work shall be.

Nice pictures, interesting that they fixed the rudder to the hull with a large nail, the billing boat kit also wants you to do the same, i did some research into the topic and it seems like the correct (and most logical) way was to use a rope instead of nail. That way you can actually move the rudder. Did you take any close ups around the mast fish?

Frustration!!!.... As i said a couple of posts above i have begun finising the deck of the boat. Using 1,8x12x610 mm Obechi planks from Billing Boats. Because of several factors including my own fault i came to the conclusion i had to get a set more of these planks. No problem i thought, i had seen them being sold here in Stockholm in the number one model shop here. So today i brought the children and headed for the shop. To my surprise they were sold out... Well, what the F*** i thought, but they can probably easily order some more. The guy i was talking to looked at Billing Boats spare parts in the computer and said "well, this is strange this part is not listed here, only 1,8x10x???, so i can not order it but i will try to call them and ask them" . Haaaaaaahahahahahaaaaa why does this always happen me!

Weird.. My was 3 layered plywood, with the middle layer darked as usual. Öhr... or at least that is how i remember it. I might be wrong on this particular one. But i am absolutely certain about the decorations being plywood, because i removed the second and third layer just keeping the first layer with the scroll work to make it as thin as possible.

Let me point out that all the laser cut ones are plywood. The shields are plywood, so are the decorations... Most of the things in this kit are plywood. But the good thing with the kit is that it is close to the original ship, the only one as far as i know. As you can see, you got the anniversary edition, that´s why you got the plywood shields etc. Notice the round blob in the upper corner of the package, telling us it is 50 years anniversary.

Status update: This project is not dead, and apparently neither is this build log... After one year i think it´s time to do something again. Yesterday i removed a thick layer of dust. And i have layed one more row of floor planks. For some reason unknown to me i have not received any updates to my e-mail that people has responded to this log or sent me personal messages...

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
