As a diversion while rigging my Armed Virginia Sloop, I started building AL's Swift.  I switched out some of the wood:  Boxwood planking above the wales, bloodwood trim, wenge wales, cherry and holly details.  I like the contrasts in the wood.  Progress so far in the photos.

Make sure you sand along the grain of the planks. If you try to do it across the edge you will splinter them.

The edges are cracking when I sand them. Casey, that  sounds like a good method . I'll try it

    Here are my latest pictures.
I mounted the quarterdeck and finished the stern. The sides post at the edges of the. Stern we're hard to do but I got them as close as I could

I am not sure of the stern. Do I file down the #9 bulkhead to match the curved stern? I am also not sure of the angle to file the sides of the stern
I also made a mistake and cracked the curved piece. I glued it back together . I hope it doesn't hurt the final shape. I think I will be planking back there, correct?

I finished the bow and stern fillers and think I got the angles right on the bow

These are the pictures after gluing the deck
I think I got the double angle correctly as well as aligning the stern
    What you think?

I think I got the bulkheads straight and perpendicular . Here are the photos. I added balsa fillers at the stern and bow that are dry fitted. Should I add more fillers?
I got the height by making the tall bulkhead frame flush and then leveled the other tall piece with that

Attached are pictures of the framing they are not yet glued
I have a question about the height of the frames. I am assuming that the height of most of them should be even with the keel. However, the 2 that are higher, how do I determine their height?
I am using the Fair-a-frame building jig the square the frames. However, the keel is too small and narrow to fit. Is this a good building jig to use. How do I fit the keel on the stand if it too narrow? Also the frames when fitted are too too long to fit using the frame, what do I do?

Hey everyone, thanks for following my Scotland build! I have been reorganizing the house lately and also my shipyard room flooded this summer, so I haven't gotten my build as much as I wanted. Good thing is that only the floor got damaged, none of my ship stuff. But, I had to fix the floor because of mold and stuff.

Anyway, I have gotten some questions about the bulkheads at step 3.

Here are some pics of those, hopefully this helps how I installed them.

    Yes, Fishface,
the pieces of wood need to be measured in mm to find the right lath but the one you need fits perfectly on the bottom of the keel

    Hi Harbm,
I fitted and glued #12 to the frame and then I filed it to match the taper of the frame

    Hi Sygreen.
    Welcom to MSW.
Have a read here on starting a build log. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/53-before-you-post-your-build-log-please-read-this-starting-and-naming-your-build-log/
That's all the information you need to start your build log.

As far as tools .. As others have said.. Keep it basic.. Quality is important. Knife. Razor saw . Mitre block to keep your cuts square. Cutting mat.(Large)
Sand paper. Small files. A good light. Tweezers.

    Best of luck.
    Regards Antony.

When I got started I built my first model with tools that I had in my tool.  assorted hand tools tweezers nippers files pinvice drills a ruler sandpaper a razor saw and a scroll saw.  It took me along time but it was worth it.  I had a lot of fun and learned many things.  One of them is patience.  Another is one that can be a golden rule.  Watch, learn, listen, and study.  I added to my tools gradually over the years to what I hve now.  When I moved in with my sister all I brought with me ws my tool box.  And the MS Whalw Boat.  I can build it with nothing but hand tools.  It will take me tie but I have plenty of time on my hands.  This is a hobby not a race.  Enjoy yourself, and fun.  My emjoyment is the challenge of trying something different or new.
