Now working on top mast shrouds using 3.5mm dead eyes....
Thought I might share this handy seizing jig for anyone interested.
Took me about 15 minutes to create this simple jig, using two wire stubs to secure the tiny deadeye on one upright and the second upright with a map pin used as belaying point to secure the two ends of the shroud nice and taunt whilst being perfectly seized.

    Hi Steve:
As much fun as the small plastic kits are....once you're ready for wood, you will be hooked for life. Enjoy.
Looking forward to your progress posts.

Just running across this discussion on my Confederacy. Been so long ago now..... I really appreciate the kind comments.
Be assured, I do not consider myself a serious historian of this wonderful art....just an old guy who fell in love with it and really enjoys the challenge.

Always such a personal pleasure to visit your work Alexandru. Each time I re-visit your amazing photo log I see something else that makes me go OMG!
It's like going back in time to witness the actual building of the original Vic from the keel up.
I salute you sir for your exquisite skills and steadfast dedication to the finest details.

Just wondering....It appears as though the thickness could be removed with a horizontal belt sander as well, using a simple "depth jig" to prevent over sanding.

The Vic is such a beautiful ship, and built by so many modelers over the years....( I've built her twice ). But this has got to be the finest Vic I've ever seen. Alexandru's beautiful work makes me want to do her again. I love coming back to this incredible build log for inspiration.

Alexandru....thank you so much for your detailed reply regarding your nailing. The use of brass wire for nails was indeed my guess. The sheer number of precisely drilled nail holes is simply mind boggling to me sir. I solute you with the utmost respect and admiration.
Also....I was delighted to discover your human side.....ripping out her bow wales to correct the sweep....otherwise we could be thinking you might actually be a computerized machine....har har
Fell asleep last night in my recliner on page 5....woke up and found my iPad had exhausted power.
Shop time this morning....will resume methodical study of your early postings later today when I take a break.
Yes, I did note the dates of your photos....another point....you are also a hell of a photographer to go along with your amazing wood crafting talents.

BTW.....You can find my two Vic's by clicking on the link below.
    Very big fan....

Master A.....Just read your comment on page 4 regarding gun port positions at her bow....

"As for the gunports to low - there are things I am willing to repair and things that I do not - this is one of the latter. I'll live with it.
The fact that I corrected at least some of the problems makes me feel better about my build and this is something already."

    I LOVE IT!!!!

Alexandru....please excuse my questions (just a couple for now)....
I see more treenailing throughout your entire build than I have ever seen on any model....ever. Even as you did the most beautiful perfect hull planking I have seen (with treenails) knowing it would be covered with copper plating!
So my first question is - Do you use a filler for all those treenails? It appears that, in some cases, you used actual nails.

Second question.... Are there actually two of you?

Now I shall resume my study of your log (beginning at page 4), having turned off the lights in my shop for the night.

    Hi Alexandru:
I am thrilled to discover this build log for two personal reasons.... Of my many builds, the Victory is by far my favorite, having built her twice on different scales (and may build her again POF after studying your comprehensive log). The second reason being that I have found another true MASTER to learn from....and, believe me, I have so much to learn.
However long it shall take, I plan to visit every entry of your log. From here out, I will refrain from the clutter of so many "likes".....just know, I will be LIKING every thing I see (like a child in a candy store).
    With greatest respect and appreciation....

Very nice work. So what was the reasoning for the extremely oversized yards on this ship? Never seen anything like this.

After several days of working on prototypes for cannons and carronades.... including their carriages, and rigging.... I guess I'm about ready to move back to the ship for a while.

With so many of these guns to create, I'm hoping to get the technique for creating and installing them down to within reason.  The mock up of a gun port has been invaluable in that respect.  I came to the conclusion that a few trade-offs was necessary in terms of being able to install each gun.

The hooks that attach the block to the bulwark has to be much longer in order to get them to anchor into the eye rings.
I also learned that all rigging must be attached to the carriage and cannon before attempting to install.
Also.... the cannon restraining rope must be hooked in place before attempting to hook the block and tackle hooks.

Finally, I was able to develop this little jig which will be used to make all of the rigging the exact same length.... very critical.

With 30 long guns and 24 carronades needed, my plan, for now, is to build three long gun and two carronade modules per week as I continue with progress on the ship..... in 10 weeks I should have all the guns completed.
This is, by far, more fully rigged guns than I have ever installed on a ship.

    Beak painted ....

All bulkheads fitted to the former with careful measurements taken to insure precise spacing at the outer edges and top surface alignment from bow to stern.
Next task of fairing the edges and creating bow and stern filler blocks.
Also, I finished the starboard side carvings and painted the whole beak flat black.  Then used a straight razor blade to scrape the top surface of the carvings clean, leaving the black background.
Then added the delicate double trim rails above and below the carvings and painted them flat black.
After three coats of acrylic white, mostly applied with a tooth pic, completed the beak by painting out the red/white/blue shield....again, acrylic paint applied with very sharp tooth pic.

    Beak refinement....
The last posting was an experiment, but needed refinement in order to entirely work.  The idea to use a router to create and inlay proved to have issues in terms of allowing me to attach the bow stem to the assembly now, yet allowing me to work on the beak carvings off ship.

I worked it out by completely whacking off the beak and creating a tongue-and-groove beak that can be added after completing the carvings.

    Problem solved!

    The Billet Head....

I spent a lot of time finding and studying close up photos of the beak .... particularly the billet head.  Most interesting was this old photo I found of the original billet head after being removed for restoration.

Since this is something that must be done off-ship, I decided I will need to do the carving before fitting the beak to the keel former. That represents a big problem with gluing up the entire assembly....right?!
Went to bed last night with this on my mind, realizing I would never be able to come anywhere close to creating that detail with the wood I used to create the bow stem....poplar is not great for carving small details.

The solution popped in me noggin at 4:30 am.... Up and to the ship yard!

    Four hours later......
This is the beak as created from the plan pattern....

And here's the beginning of the poly vinyl billet head carving I began working on this morning.  Much to go yet, but I'm fairly pleased with the experiment at this stage.

And the simple method that came to me at 4:30 am this morning.... inlay the carving onto the beak!
Used a small router to remove the material from the area where the inlay will be fitted.

Once finished and painted up with black and white details, I'm hoping it will turn out not too bad.

    Rigging Update......
Finally completed most of the rigging of the yards for all three masts.
The Spanker Boom and Gaff have been built for months, just waiting to be put into service.
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
Once all rigging is complete, I will wrap her up with her flags (not yet created).

Always a pleasure to see Chuck bring his masterful touch to the development of another major creation.  Just wishing I were a younger artist and could participate in this build.  Working with Chuck really cranks up the creative juices in a modeler, for sure.
Happy to take a front chair to follow this build, while I enjoy building his English Pinnace.
Thanks Master Passaro, for allowing us mortals to follow along.

One of you historians help me understand this.
Getting ready to begin creating the 32 pound carronades for the spar deck.  In my research, I keep coming across photos of this gun with a screw mechanism.  I have not seen this replicated on any model, and don't intend on doing that myself.  Just curious......

Compared to this photo we all recognize....

    Final canvas frames done....
Happy to have all the companionway canvas frames now completed and installed.
I still have to add the shot stowing racks to the companionway frames.

    Note the binnacles also done....

So many places to go from this point, but with so many cannonades to do, I'm thinking about knocking out a few of them before working on the skylight fixture.

Quick overhead shot of the developing spar deck.  Once the last canopy frame is completed, I plan to begin developing the three masts, seen dry fitted here.
