I have been building the quarterdeck sub assemblies from the forecastle gratings to the quarterdeck barricades.

Once I have completed building and painting the sub assemblies I will install.

I just need to attach the 3mm x 1mm strips to the gratings for the coaming so I can then drop the gratings in the openings which will be held in place by the coamings. I made a bit of a error initally using 4 x 2 mm strips for the coaming (thought it was 3mm x 2mm for some reason unbeknown to me) which made me think there was something wrong with the quaterdeck. Thankfully it was simple to recover the gratings. Thanks to Jerry and David for their help and advice.

Pictures of the sub assemblies work in progress

Close up of the ships bell tower. Not sure if I need to paint some of the top bit black (in the four corners).

I have been very busy what with planking, lining gun ports, etc but I think I am now about ready to tackle the tiles!

I decided a long time ago to use Pva glue for the planking and use pins so I have been busy filing the holes and some open joints..

I think one of the pitfalls in doing the planking this way is one lowers ones standards and I ended up piecing in small bits of plank rather than cutting planks to fit. Having now done some filing and sanding I decided to apply a coat of primer to fill the grain etc so I will now be doing some more filing and sanding until I have had enough.

Here are my pics to date

With Ref to V2.0 of my copper plating, I have done a lot better job and achieved the look looking for, even in V1.0 well to a point. Except for to curve on the bow I rather wanted the Nailed look to continue round but was unable to due to the curvature, But I have slept on it came back to it and like it so im not going to even try to attempt to change it.

I started my center line on the center of the door catch, ( thought i made sense ) very thing else just fell into place,

So far on V2.0 I'm on 21.5 hours, (not that i timing it)

Well I have the rest of today to lay one or to copper plates.  Oh Btw, I have noticed that a few plates are thicker than others until i found there are two or three stuck together.

I cleaned the excess glue off as I went along and the used brasso for the final cleaning process before applying a clear varnish

unless you want them to look pristine you don't need to varnish them, you might (just might) find it to bright in the long term

    Hello rich
Yep, I think they look far better when they are dull. I polished mine with brasso and varnished them, but they have still dulled off , and look all the better for it. DAVID

    Good afternoon everyone

Today is the day that I mounted the ship's lanterns and now I can go no further until certain parts arrive from Jotika.  They were shipped a day or so ago so it'll be touch-ups, fixes and worrying about a display case and mountings until the parts get here.  The parts are for the ship's boats so I'm stuck until then.  I also have to figure out a way to stand the ship in the display since I failed to drill holes in the bottom of the keel for mounting.  I don't want to use a cradle as it distracts from the ship so I have to work on some method......  Any suggestons will be greatly appreciated......  My first and only other build, the Cutty Sark, has been sitting in an acrylic case for abou 15 years now and there is no trace of dust (I did wax all the lines) and no discloration in the acrylic.  I have more or less decided on another acrylic case but this time I'm going to stand it on a low wooden table instead of an acrylic bench like Cutty Sark.  So until the parts arrive for building the boats I plan to spend my time thinking about mountings and display cases.

Here are a couple of pictures of the ship's lanterns.  I achieved the yellow candle burning look by lining the inside of the lanterns with yellow plastic, an idea that Lawrence suggested.  He also was very kind to send me the plastic.

Have a great evening everyone and take care,

    Jerry

    Carl,
Yes but I have the last laugh, them Dodgers just took their division!

    Back to building.
My Arch Enemy Mr Sciatica has paid me a visit and is interfering with my build time again. Not to mention work, I just spent the last two nights "wading with pirates" in a theme park attraction whose name I am not allowed to mention.
Since Ole Mr Sciatica wont let me sit for long periods I have put my windows on hold. Instead I have been doing things that can be accomplished while standing.

On a positive note I am making progress on my carriages and cannons. I think I am finally getting the hang of this blackening process!

I started out soldering the trunnions in and filing them to a constant length. I just used soft solder - they were a press fit and wont be under any stress.

After a good going over with a purple scrubby pad and brass brush I cleaned everything up in soap and distilled water with a distilled rinse. Then into the ultra sonic cleaner. My little Harbor Freight cleaner works pretty well but I wish there was a way to run for more than a 3 minute cycle. I ran it for 10 cycles then rinsed in distilled water.

After that it was into a 50/50 solution of distilled water and muratic acid. I intended to leave them in for 30 minutes but the Better Half came home and we went to lunch. They ended up being in the acid till the next morning when I woke up and went "Oh NO!!" I ran outside and pulled them out afraid of what I would find. Other than being discolored they were fine.

A quick dip in a baking soda solution and a final rinse on distilled water, into the blackening solution they went for ten minutes. They looked good while wet but when they dried not so good. The top set are after cleaning but before the second soak.

I recalled Russ saying he blackens his parts several times so I took 1/2 of them and rubbed them down with a scrubby pad and back in they went for a bout 15 minutes. This second soak was much better so I did the other half. They look pretty good to me, a nice black with a satin sheen.

While all this has been going on I have finished staining the carriages and applied a coat of linseed oil with beeswax. Once that dried for a couple of days I buffed them up and finished drilling for my hardware. I felt they needed some more oil and wax but wasnt sure how to go about that with the hardware glued in. I noodeled on it for a bit and hit on my dremmel with a buffing wheel. I rubbed a bit of oiled with a q-tip and then buffed them on a low speed. It worked so well I am going to go back and re-do my other small parts, I was never really happy with the sheen, they just do not match the hull.
I still have to make cap squares as well as finish cleaning up the trucks and get some stain on them.  then I can start rigging these things.
I think next build I will opt for lighter colored wood, all my hard work kind of disappears into the darker mahogany.

    I am getting there, slowly!
