Bob, well behind you, as I still have hours left on CHEERFUL. But I wanted to thank you for the great series you ran on her build. As always, it helped me tremendously, and steered me away from many mistakes. About to start the rigging, I don't know about GRANADO, but will do some research, and perhaps she'll be my next up North build. Thanks again, Terry

just starting to read about "Cheerful". Would like to do her, but like you don't have the tools to do a complete scratch build. How did you order the planking from Crown? What else did you specifically order from them? After "Essex". she looks really appealing! Cheers, Terry- 525 replies

Bob, a museum piece! Couldn't have gotten as far as I have without your log. Old hands can't rig anymore at this scale, so admiralty model. Awaiting your work on Cheerful! Cheers, Terry

I think all of us who have watched and learned from this extraordinary build should chip and buy the case your ESSEX so richly deserves. Fabulous! Terry

actually, I had only asked for the stern frames and some windows. They sent all the new bulkheads, etc. -

ME has made improvements in some of the laser cuts. For instance the gallery windows and pump handles release much more cleanly now. BTW, an easy way to make the elm pumps, is cut a #2 pencil to size, and drill out the lead. Terry

Yesterday I received a box from ME, which included new modified laser cuts , plans, and a new handbook. I don't think I need anything at this stage, but perhaps the additional ship's boat. I might mount two, one off the stern, and another midships. I don't think I'll start over! I may try to send some photos, but being rather computer illiterate, and 1500 miles from my grand kids, it might take some doing. Terry

Well Counselor, that would necessitate the ownership of a cell phone. My last two are on the bottom of Biscayne Bay, where I previously ran races. Now well into the later portion of my eighth decade, I have no need for something whose last location I would certainly not recall or remember to keep in a charged condition. But I certainly do appreciate watching your beautiful work, that I strive to emulate. Perhaps, depending on your handicap. I could compete closely on the links! Cheers, Terry

fascinating work! still well behind but far enough along to begin to think about how much rigging to do. Or leave her as the prototype.... Too much to think about ! Cheers, Terry

I am building the model with all the original problems. I butchered the windows the first time cutting. That's why I asked for new ones. Terry -

I have an earlier kit, same as Bob's. Bob advised that I shouldn't start, but with his help I have worked through the issues. Before I started, I asked ME what they were going to do, but received no reply. Knowing what negatives to expect and using Bob's blog, I have been able to make a pretty good model, for my ability level. Was a pain early on tho. Surely not as clean and crisp as Bob's, but OK. Working on deck fixtures now. Will not completely rig however. So it can be done. Terry -
Bob, what size line are using from Chuck? Cold up here! Cheers, Terry

thought I already sent this...anyway, saw the ESSEX ads , but not by Sam. Anyway, I'm up to deck furniture, stove, etc, and partial decking. Lots of lumber from Hobbymill. Next to decide on gun carriages. North tomorrow for Xmas. Milwaukee and cold. No ESSEX for awhile. Merry Christmas everyone! Terry

thanks about the paint...was experimenting, non too satisfactorily. well, one minor problem popped out as I was doing the beam pocket strips....after being so careful to get the port and starboard strips level, abeam, etc., I'm slightly wider amidships, and some of the supplied beams are therefore, slightly too short! also, plans call fro 33 beams, but we're supplied with 32. Well, I guess I can fix a few! Don't know how she grew.. Terry

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
