I am almost sure that you can get thin plywood sheets at Bauhaus.

I only know one website for thin wood strips in Switzerland: www.smartwood.ch

Their prices are not the best and it might be worth ordering wood from Germany: www.arkowood.de

An other alternative would be to search on ebay.de the prices there are really good.

Another way to get wood is to go in Zürich at the wiesermodelbau, they sell wood for modeling, you could control the quality before buying it, but they may not have the right dimensions.

Did you try to iron the plywood (not sure if the heat is good for plywood), Karleop explained that method somewhere in my buildlog (normally used for planking)

Hi, so my progress was slower than usual once more, but tomorrow school starts again, so maybe my progress will be better. (My teacher probably does not agree ). Anyway, today I started to cut out the side windows. I have used varnish for the stern windows.

I hope you all had excellent vacations and a Happy New Year to everyone.

After quite some time of not being able to spend even a minute on my Bluenose, I have finally found some time on the last day of my Christmas holidays to start working on her again. I decided that, before I finish the deck like in my tests I need to cut out the shapes of the deck structures. For which I would need to build the deck structures first.
As luck would have it, the 2 mm. plywood from the box on which I find the parts, partly drawn, partly cut, are warped in such a way that I can only use the smallest parts as it is. So I first need to straighten that out. So I soaked the plywood and pressed it under weight only to return the next morning and see that the wood had gotten mildewed. Well, not good of course  . So I washed and disinfected the wood and tried again, now adding paper towels to deal with the moist and changing these every few hours or so. I am beginning to think I would be better off building these parts from scratch next time.
Waiting for the wood to dry and hopefully have the right shape (flat  ) I started to rebuild part 29 from scratch. Part 29 from the kit does not have the right shape (see also my 2nd post, point 3c and picture 5). It does not fit the hull really well and it is not like what I find on pictures of the Bluenose.
On this picture you see piece 29 lying on the picture and two possible shapes to replace it with made out of paper just next to it.

The bottom shape is more or less drafted from a plan which I received from Matija (thanks Matija) and just above that my own interpretation from looking at the pictures and my model. As you can see I made the middle part much wider since from the pictures this seems to be about 1/3 of the width of the total shape.
The result is shown on the pictures below: on the left side the original part, on the right the new part. The first picture shows the parts on the photo as comparison, the second picture shows the parts on the model.

First bit of planking is done with Swiss Pear.   Just the counter so far.  I've hung the stern post and rudder blank for position and to make sure I made the hole right.

There will be a bit of ebony trim over the exposed yellowheart after the rest of the planking goes one.  And "above" the counter and below the lights I'll be putting in the shaped trim strip after the rest of the stern has been planked.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased.

Thank you for the advices,I followed them by putting boiling water on the wood strips, it worked out okay and I was able to nail them in place, for the second one I will also try the iron bar, will hopefully post results soon (probably a day or two)

Congratulations for your new work. As always your work is breath-taking, a true piece of art, I was asking myself how you handle the dust, as your other models do not seem to be in a case. I hope that you will have a pleasant experience at your new job.
Good luck and a happy new year.

    Hello again ...

thx all for your compliments... Yes, I admit: I really enjoy the build of the Royal Caroline. Too sad that the end is coming closer with every day of fun...

The next project already takes shape... I purchased the Occre Endeavour. And... shame on me... I ordered my absolutely dream of a ship - the Friedrich Wilhelm zu Pferde by Euro Model. I dont know if I already dare to start with the FW or if ist better to wait and get more expierence. But Euro Model had an Holiday discount with 20 % to the usual Price. So shipment and all taxes included the kit is just about 570 Euro (more than 700 normally)... I just could NOT say NO... (even the Admiral said: Do it - so... would you wait with this encouragement?? )

Well...we will see... I feel just a Little bit crazy now as the FW is for me the "royal class" of modelling.

Next time I will update the Caroline again

    Cheerio

    Dear friends,
first I would like to wish you happy New Year 2015 and have a great time, plenty of health and optimism.
Thank you very much for your kind words and all the comments, you wrote to me.
I am blessed to be here with you and appreciate your favour a lot. Tomorrow it is my first day at new work so now I feel a bit nervous, cause this will be completely different than my previous occupation.
Your support and friendship mean a lot for me and helps me being strong.
    Thank you warmly.
During last days I finished topmasts and deadeyes on the tops. I used card and pale wood (ramin). know, the work goes slowly, but I try to make the model neatly and much realistic, than my previous ships, so it is necessary to spend some time studying plans and nautical literature.

    Hello again

Just a little update with some pics. I am more or less ready with the standing rigging. Just the ratlines have to be made yet. But I will first look if I can fasten some ropes of the running rigging on places that are just difficult to reach - like the rings on the bottom of the masts. After this I will lay the ratlines and then fabricate the yards. The pics show mostly just details of the current status. I tried to shoot some pics to show the loading device with the boat. Was kind of tricky to build - but at least: It works

Well, dear friends, I have finished tops on the masts ( made of card and wood) and now I am going to continue with rigging on Royal Caroline. I have unfortunately less free time for hobbies ( because I have a new and very responsible job as a sales director in a company selling cosmetics), but I would like to continue and make models for relaxation.

    Hello my friends

it is time for al little update. The last days I was working in the nightshift from 5 to 1 am - so when I came home all I wanted was a beer or two and then into my bed. And during the day there was so much things to do so I had almost no time to build. Well - this changed as I have my vacation of the year now - that means four weeks at home till midth of January. There will be time to continue my Royal Caroline (BTW my Admiral says I should look for a new kit asap - as she thinks I will finish the Caroline at the vacation..)

I did prepare the masts. The bowsprit is mounted, the foremast also. I started to rig the formemast with the shrouds. The wood of the masts was very fine and was easy to work with as it has to be carved on the top rectangular. All the jobs with the mars and the salings are perfect to be done.Only, as regrettably, the instructions are more or less BAD. So they do not show where you have to attach eyelets for the ropes eg for the bowsprit or some other ropes. I found some good pics of a built Caroline on http://modelships.de/Royal_caroline_I/Royal_Caroline_I.htm this helps me very much. But I think its a shame for any company to distribute so bad instruction with a kit that at least costs about 320 euros (germany).

Nevertheless I found the solutions and can now start to build up the masts, to rig them, to get the standing rigging done. Then the yards will follow...

As a resume in-between time I at least say: I am content with the kit, the materials and the plkan at a fullview. Improvements could be done in Details. But this is as always... At least I want to be challangend - otherwise I would buy some plastic klit :D

Now pls enjoy the pics - as always: comments are welcome

    Cheerio my merry mates

The main and mizzen top masts are now in place, and have all their shrouds and ratlines added, phew, I am glad they are all finished and that I split it up this way, as it did make the ratlines a lot less tedious to tie,I will now most likely add as much of the standing rigging that I can before fitting the tagallants masts.
I have also included some photos of Diana with Pegasus and The lady Nelson.

Firstly a lower fold down table I used to bring the rigging to a better level to work at

    Hola:

I just finished installing the sails of the main mast.  As I mention before I made some changes in the rigging, adjusting more to the Vasa pictures than to the BB plans.

I haven´t fix the rigging threads yet, and I am waiting to finish all the sails to do that, because:

    1) to facilitate the maneuver in putting the new lines,
    2) due to the changes in the rigging some of the lines intersect each other, so it is necessary to change the place on the pinracks and this is more easy if you haven't fix the lines already and finally,
    3) to make final adjustments to the tension of the yarns

Next challenge: the mizzen sails. I will probably make a combination between the rigging shown in BB plans and Vasa pictures to have a more "logic" rigging.

    Saludos, Karl

This is a relief, I was quite anxious that I would do the model and then fail at the rigging. That would be terrible  .

Top mast was fitted to the fore mast next, and the shrouds and ratlines have been added.

One tip I do have, which I seem to have omitted to mention in my earlier posts on the shrouds and ratlines, is that, most kit manufacturers instructions for ratlines, recommend using .25mm, or which ever size natural thread and then stain it black (a very messy option in my opinion) there reasoning’s being that black thread is to stiff to use well Caldercraft thread is quite stiff, but I always use Amiti which is no stiffer than natural colour thread.
    The main and mizzen next.
