After finishing the out side planking I have made the planking of the main deck. The question was how wide the planks must be. The only binding information I found in the report of the wreck of the Mary Rose. Here is the plank width 50cm. This corresponds to 15mm in scale 1:33.
After this I planked the inside of the main deck and cut in the gun ports.
Next job was to make the fore castle. There were quite a few parts to do. There are deck beams, mast tracks, anchor and foremast bitt and another hatch. An other question was how to paint the walls inside. Because I didn't find a research result I did paint teh walls with English Red.

Hello guys!
The summer 2018 was to warm to stay in the dockyard for modeling. It was a good time for barbecue, swimming and lazing around with old friends sitting in the garden enjoying an ice-cold beer. And last but not least there were to wunderfull journeys together with my admiral to the Lofoten islands in Norway and the Møn Island in Danmark.
In the last two weeks the planking was done. Here are some pics of the Golden Hind today.

Many thanks for your kind words and all the likes.
The last weeks was not so much time for modelling the Golden Hind. There had been many interesting job. Thats ok. Here are some pics from the last days.
To finsh the wales in the bow I first did mount the upper and the lower wale. After this I use spacer blocks to mount the bow part of the wale in the middle

Next step was planking the space between the two lower wales and the stern.

please, scroll back to the 13. April 2018. You will find there and after this date many hints and photos on how I did the ribbon and the single letters.
I was using mostly the dentist's drill and only seldom the manual self-made carving knives. Here, with this decoration, I think, I did not use manual tools at all.

Well, the gesso did actually add some imperfection in the already smooth surfaces of the carving. It is also very hard to grind gesso. So, once you get a surface, that is it. More "smoothing" has been done by GAC100. Still, this medium did close some very fine details, but not a big problem as you see on the photos. That is also the reason why I will try to go on with shellac.
With this said, no positive effect of these layers, but you need to apply them with oil paint. Otherwise you get other severe problems. The "only" extremely positive effect of gesso is the brilliance you get out of the oil paint. It is so shining, so alive, that I was very surprised of the difference between the direct painting on the wood and on the white primed surface.

Beautiful work, although you missed out how you actually carved the scroll and acanthus leaves, the nail router is a great idea also

Stunning carved work, Drazen! Also an excellent tutorial on prep and paint for wood surfaces.
Is another purpose of the gesso to sort of smooth any irregularities in the carved surface?

... and this is the final result on the ship.
The ribbon and small windows have been assembled too.
I will need to correct the paint on some small areas. This has been peeled due to the pressure when glueing, but this is no problem.
Finally, I want to mention, that the benefit of beautiful colour of oil paint has to be taken relative in comparison with a very difficult procedure, very long drying time and low resistance to mechanical stress. Still, I will proceed with oil paints.

Final protection by varnish (also by Royal Talens)
After several months drying, I apply
- Talens picture varnish matt 003 for all surfaces
and
- mixture of 1:1 picture varnish matt 003 with picture varnish glossy 002 on all decorations. In the reality, the decorations have been painted glossy in order to simulate gold, but on the model, the 100% glossy does not look real. So, a semi-matt shade looks much better and more realistic.
I apply final coat by airbrush. This removes partly the brush strokes or imperfections, by at the same time keeping the surface real (because of previous hand-brush application).

Protect the oil paint when applying pressure! A big drawback of oil paint is the low resistance to the mechanical influence.

Now: again make a copy f the form, and cut out the paper stripes. Put the stripes into the frames and remove paint on the frame on some areas - so the glue can get to the wood. On paint, it will nit hold well.

... than:
1) 4 very thin layers of Old Holland "yellow ochre light" (probably best oil paint brand existing - Old Holland). Always brushing the excessive outer surfaces to increase the 3D effect and depth of the structure.
2) Than finally only one thin layer of the "old Holland ochre" (Old Holland brand again). This one is of darker nuance then the first 4 layers.
You must imagine a very thin paint staying in the recessed areas slightly thicker and on the exposed areas nearly totally brushed away.
Let the layers dry thoroughly before moving to the next layer!!

Painting...
1st. : priming
It was difficult to get the best primer for wood. I finally decided on Golden GAC 100. This shall save the wood from decay and protect getting oil paint into the wood (bad for wood and bad for the surface effect). I think, in my next parts, I will use several thin layers of shellac to protect instead GAC100 beacause GAC100 makes the surface not so smooth and is difficult to grind and correct.
After GAC100, I apply Gesso primer by Royal Talens. This one is very nice and has acceptable price. Gesso is needed to get a solid grip for the oil paint.
All this in thin coats not to "destroy" the pattern. I am using high quality brushes

After refining the shape to get more 3D-effect and "contents behind the surface", I am ready with my decoration pattern.

... and we go to the other side... which has to be more or less - symmetrical.
For this, I simply scanned the part, mirrored it in the Photoshop and glued it on another boxwood stripe. Now, I am working with my own pattern and no more with the pattern from the plan.

What came out was a coarse "prototype". I checked the fit into the frame.

Than I made a piece of stripe which fits right into the frame. I took boxwood and bent it on the steam.
The stripe out of the plan, I glued on the boxwood stripe. After that, I started to work on the shape - bit-by-bit.

Luckily, the pattern was similar as I have on my plans. So, I cut the part of the plan and check if it fits into my frame

.. difficult process on deciding on the decoration form/pattern. There are different decorations on the van de Velde drawings for the same ship. Also the models from the museums are not following the same pattern.
I decided to follow the drawing here - second from above.

... and put just slight amounts of thin CA-glue to hold them in shape.
Take care:
Not to let the glue make your frame stick on the hull (you will want to remove it later on) CA glue will leave yellow colouring on the maple wood. On the pear wood it does not leave any colouration. Than I removed the frames and put additional thin/easy flowing epoxy resin to make it more solid.
