    Hi Mates,

    Continuing with the mizenmast shroud rigging as a “test start”. This area is all new to me. Ratlines look ok – but will get better. Yes - as has been SO noted very repetitive indeed. And I’ve barely started. So;
Removed those totally wrong futtock plates and added hooks (to be painted flat black).
But the following bit is confusing; need to think this bit out.
Installed the first futtock stave. Should be tarred, but left it as is just to highlight details. But here is where is gets more involved.  I believe that my futtock shrouds are too large. Should have used a smaller diameter rope. Attaching these three shrouds to the stave will make for too “thick” a look (after spooling/tying these to the shrouds).
I think that I will remove a strand from each at the point of attachment; then wrap them over the staves. Also note the 1/10th photo (during its construction) it appears that these shrouds should also be split and attached in two places. Noted that this photo is for the main mast. Hmmm. I will do that for the center of the three shrouds that I am presently working on.
Then again, I may (since I have to remove all of those lower cap plates just re-rope these first three and start again. Just sharing my frustrations (J)))

    Cheers,

    EJ,

Still laughing  about that your 1/1 photo from your previous post. So thought that I would be a bit immature (my wife swears that I still am (:-))

So here is one looking up ha ha - iPhone was none too pleased - too close

    Mates,
Thanks for your comments always noted.
EJ, I laughed so hard you made my year, and we are only in March. That last photo is actually of the original in the museum. I was, trying to show how mine should actually look like, So perfect - thanks !

PS: thanks for your alway super nice thoughts!

    Hi Mates,

So need to work backwards again. Finishing up the mizenmast crow’s feet, now thinking of how to attach the needed futtock stave, and then the light came on.

Futtock plate connectors all wrong; need to remove those (what was I thinking) and replace them with small rigging hooks. This will need to be done for all three lower platforms.

I did not initially see rigging hooks on Vasa, but certainly what I have is worse because then I can’t continue the crow’s feet to the platforms. Still learning.

Topmast platforms will all be OK as is.

    Cheers,

    Hi Mates,

Well this update, for me is actually mostly satisfying.

Built two more platforms, and caps

    Installed all of the topmasts

    Started some ratlines

Made another mouse for the mainmast stay.

Served the mainmast stay, and the block rope on the foremast

Re-worked a Corel triple, and double block

Many new blocks tweaked and attached.

Attached the double pulley at the base of the foremast for the mainmast stay, and attached the triple block.

    ===================

A few Grrrrrrs, of course, main topmast sheave cutout should have been angled inward, lack of foresight.

Main cap doesn’t quite “sit” right

Mizenmast cap is too close to its platform

Mouse should be, as you know, a woven affair.

What I made is obviously incorrect. I saw how to do it correctly on another’s build log. Hmm my skill set not there.

Always nice of you to drop by, and thanks for the encouraging notes – much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Hi Mates,

Continuing work on the upper main mast, putting all of the bits together, time consuming work that seems as if nothing is really moving forward. But enjoying this part of the build.

I found a photo (can’t seen to locate it now) but on this model the fid had a rope attached to it and was then attached to a shroud at the platform. Hmm made sense.

So, decided to follow that idea and did the same for the main upper mast.

The sheaves that I added near the tops of each mast were very out of scale. It looks as if I took too much “meat” out of each mast when adding the sheaves. So decided (incorrectly) to add side reinforcement bits on the sides.

Same problem with upper foremast – but too late for a “fix”

Thought that I would also do minor reshaping of the blocks, I have seen models that actually have blocks that appear narrower on the upper and lower sides.

FYI’s bought a new lamp. Excellent. It has three levels of brightness. LED, of course, and 6000k daylight. Very light repeated taps on that circle at the outer top adjusts the light; from Amazon.

As always thanks for dropping by, the likes and your kind posts.

PS: Really enjoying the last season of Black Sails……

    Cheers,

A little more progress - The ship`s boat which was built earlier is now in place along with the anchors. The pulley hanging from the cathead was made by using a 7mm triple block with a copper strip bent around it & soldered shut. Then I soldered a hook to the copper strip to hang the anchor on. Also got all the upper yard braces on. Next will be the fore & main yard braces, sheets,& tacks.

update - The mizzen yards are now completed. After some discussions with Pete(piratepete007)it was decide to mount the crossjack yard a little different than what the plans showed. It was mounted with a simple sling with no halliards & the lifts were rigged with deadeyes instead of running tackle. That yard was almost never lowered,so that  semi-permanent mounting was used. Still need to do the braces yet,as well. Some of the belaying points for the lateen yard were a little vague,so I rigged them where I thought would be best by adding a couple of cleats to the poop deck.

Update - the main mast rigging is now completed except for the braces, which will be completed a little later. Once more,a lot of lines coming down to a relatively small area. Glad to have that done!

    Mark,
The following figure is from R.C. Anderson where he suggests that the form of spritsail yard bracing  (only the starboard shown to keep things 'simple') was typical in English ships around 1690. Just another piece of the jigsaw.

Another small update - the topgallant & topsail yards are now mounted after fastening all those tiny blocks to the yards. The lifts are only done on the topgallant yards - the rest will be done after all the yards are mounted. The braces will be about the last thing done - with them in place it`s really hard to get my hands in to do other rigging. The topgallant halliards are belayed to deadeyes at the mast tops & the topmast yard halliards for the fore & main are belayed to the chain wales. For the ribs & parrels,I had some ribs left over from a previous build & the parrels are from the bead store(I never throw away leftover parts & wood). Thanks for looking in.

The rigging of the bowsprit is now pretty much complete - quite the mess of ropes! Most of the sail handling lines were installed with the lines running through the blocks with a toggle on the ends to keep them from pulling through the blocks

Update - the footropes are finally done. I started by clamping a balsa board to my table & made two lines representing the length of the stirrups. The yard was then pinned down on the upper line. Then I bent a piece of 1mm brass wire into a u shape & pushed it into the board along the lower line. The stirrup ropes were tied around the yard & cut off long enough to wrap around the wire & with a small clamp holding a little tension on it,a seizing was made to make a small eye. Some diluted white glue  was applied to stiffen the ropes so they would hang straight. Lastly, the footropes were then ran through the eyes & tied off on the ends.

Update - I thought it would be a good time to take a break from rigging & work on the ship`s boat. The kit supplied boat is molde from resin & with some work it can be made to look presentable. The first picture shows the boat as supplied - the casting is very thick,so the first thing I did was thin it down with my dremel & sanding drum. Then I added a little sheer to it. The frames were added - only down to the bottom of the casting. Floor boards were then added - they hide the fact that the frames don`t go all the way down to the keel.A cap rail was the made along with a rubbing strake. The inside was painted yellow ochre along with the space between the cap rail & rubbing strake. The bottom was painted with a Floquil color called aged white. The rudder was then made with the hinges simulated by installing a couple of pins, then some black card stock was cut & glued on next to the pins & the pins were then glued to the added strip on the transom.  Finally, all the thwarts, foot boards.& thole pins were added. I did not make the masts or oars - didn`t want to hide all the work I did by filling up the inside of the boat with them. If anyone asks, they are stowed below decks.

For those members intrigued by Mark's last comment regarding deflection of the foremast stay, they might be interested to know that through a mutual cooperation between Mark, Vince, Ken and myself, I am writing a collection of detailed files describing how the Royal William could be built [the files are freely available to anybody to download]. I have the greatest respect for these members who are currently showing a wealth of different skills in building the same ship and who allow me to collate what they are posting.

The following two images hopefully illustrate the problem in creating a suitable tension in the sprit topmast backstay that does not interfere too much with the alignment of the fore topmast stay.

I decided to fix an error - the cleats on the fore & main masts for the preventer stays should have been just one on the forward surface of the mast instead of two on the sides,so I removed the ones on the sides & added the ones on the forward sides of the masts.

    Hi mates - another update.
The main stay & preventer  stay are now done,as well as the snaking. The fore & main top crowsfeet are done also. 2mm rope was used for the main stay & 1.6mm rope for the preventer stay.

Another little update - after re-doing the bowsprit mast ratlines, the bowsprit was set in place. The gammoning was then done & the rack blocks were made from some walnut strips & set in place. Finally, the bobstays were rigged to the stem & bowsprit.

Another little update - I thought I would take a little break from rigging & add some nails to the wales as Ken did on his RW. The nails I used are from the railroad area of my local hobby shop. They are called track pins & the nice thing about them is they are already blackened .
