NMBROOK got a reaction from Omega1234 in Amerigo Vespucci by Dimitris71 - Mantua - 1:100 scale
Hopefully Panart have realised what a bad idea the balsa was .The book is extremely useful as a guide to providing more detail, however some 'creative thinking' is required as the hull lines in the kit differ from the book.
I spiled every plank from 1.5mm pear sheet on mine.Perhaps unnecessary, but I was concerned as the planks work out at 6mm wide.It did however take around a month of 60 hour weeks to plank   .
I look forward to following along and don't be afraid to ask,I am only too glad to help in anyway

    Kind Regards

Hello Nigel, thank you for stopping by. The kit has no balsa inside, only lime wood and walnut . I have in mind to use lime as the first planking and then i will order pear strips for the 2nd. Also i will change the 0.5mm strips for the deck planking with 1mm strips. When i saw your RC,i was amazed by the warmth of the wood. Surely I will ask for your help regarding the treenailing of the hull (and maybe, for some other parts of the construction) .... a step by step guidance...lol  Also i have ordered the book  "AOS for the Royal caroline".

More great work and congratulations on your new model Dimitris My kit had been sat on the shelf for a few years when I got it,it came with both lime and balsa first planking, letting the builder decide.I tried the balsa route and sanded it off and used the lime instead. If you get a choice,I would recommend using the lime first planking, the balsa is more trouble than it is worth

NMBROOK got a reaction from Mumin in Drill speeds and materials
Strictly speaking, every material has it's own optimum cutting speed. This is not an RPM value but measured in feet or metres per minute. Many variables come into play to determine the RPM you require, for modelling, mainly the diameter of whatever the cutting the device and how many cutting faces the tool has.A milling cutter with six flutes will want to run slower than that with two.
When all these variables come in to play, you essentially have many tables of desired spindle speeds.Advances in cutting technology challenge the 30m/min I was taught was the optimum for mild steel. The latest CNC beam saw/drill lines we have at work have drills unlike anything elsewhere and can drill a 50mm hole through 40mm steel in around 5 seconds!!
Sorry I can't be more specific, but the general rule to follow is too fast with wood, you get burning, too slow and you get poor surface finish. This is only with sharp tools, blunt tools can cause either even when the speed is correct.

Great work JP I like your methodical approach and also the marquetry deck I dare say, with some careful painting, the castings should look well if you decide to leave them as is.

Le Renommee stern  is underway,......after many hours of viewing the plans, viewing endless  related images found in other logs and  those of finished builds, ... and trying to sort out ways to temporarily affix the assorted components,......I think I'm closer to overcoming a hurdle that seems to baffle me with every build.  The supplied castings  are quite well done for the scale but need some planning and a lot of trial fitting and tweaking. The metal is soft and easy  to modify. The following images should help future builders and depict my method of madness........JPattachment=266114:SCALE STENCIL OVERLAY.JPG]

I agree, this is the result I achieved using a multi stage process incorporating gilding paste followed by sealing then an acrylic wash, finally drybrushing to accentuate the depth.More detail in my Caroline log.

NMBROOK reacted to UpstateNY in Red Dragon by UpstateNY - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - Scale 1:60
    Hi All,

From my first attempt at rigging my tiller a few posts back, one problem I had was neatly seizing the blocks. Things just got worse as to help with the scale, I've reduced the my block size to 3mm from 4mm and I am also using much thinner seizing thread as Brian recommended. Now I bought Chuck's Serv-o-matic during his recent sale and thought of a way this past weekend to use it to help me seize my blocks. Perhaps this is old stuff to many, but figured I'd share in case it helps someone.

Pictures tell the story, but I clamped some 3/16in brass tubing to the gears using some 3/16in drill stops. I then glued some connector clips to the 3/16in brass tubing.  These fixtures, that are quickly removable, allowed me to hold the small hook and block firmly and use the Serv-o-matic to seize the block. I still need a lot more practice, but you can see in the final picture there is some neater seizing starting to emerge. The looser part you can see was because I removed the block from the machine before the 50/50 glue mix had dried fully and the rope loosened slightly. Fewer turns may help things look neater as well.

Anyway, I think I now have a way to seize these small blocks neatly and also much faster.  Acid test will be when I try to use the 2mm blocks I bought to do my cannons!

Hope you found this of some interest...now it's back to my rigging which is proving pretty fun!

    Cheers,

    Nigel.

    Hi All,

Another small milestone as the masts are now assembled. Tapering of the walnut dowels was done using my small lathe and I found, while rather dusty, simply using coarse 180 sandpaper worked well to quickly taper them to shape followed by smoothing using 220/320 grit paper.  The flagpole on the mainmast was made by tapering a toothpick and the small round balls were kit provided items. Wood finish is a just a couple of coats of wipe on poly and the metal work is simply blackened brass. I also bought a white project board so the masts and rigging to come can be seen better.

Pictures below and it is now time to face the rigging! Thanks for the likes and of course for visiting!

    Cheers,

    Nigel.

Welcome back Dimitris!  Looking forward to seeing your updates on your lovely Amerigo Vespucci again!

Augie...right now the maples here are only starting to turn...their deep red is a couple of weeks away if we are lucky with the fall colors!  Your leaves up in the Rockies are now doubt a bit ahead of us!

As for the Dragon...a little more progress as the gallery ladders and their support posts have been completed. Making the ladders went more smoothly than when I made the ladders to the poop deck which I am rather happy about.  Platforms are just some basswood planks with the edges lined using walnut.

Kit ladder support posts were simple curved metal posts and so I made some replacements using 3mm walnut square stock.  I cut out a lap joint to join the sections but decided to only make it 1mm deep to leave an offset as I liked the extra relief between the two sections. I then added some brass rod and the base so the post also formed a bitt and also some of Chuck's cleats.  I'll use the cleats when I rig the lines to the ladders.

That completes all the decking work so now time to start on the masts!

    Cheers,

    Nigel.
