Progress from the ol' boatyard. The first of the hull frames is officially in place. Today glued in the deadwood and first of the stern templates. The boat builders are reported to have celebrated with a little white wine, despite how late the yacht is in building progress. But we will keep a secret about this from His Majesty the king for now. Inserts wicked grin of delight.

    Peace out!

The crew mess is done, and so I can install the deck beams above. A particularly interesting point for I had to make the frame of the the skylight.

After some thought, I'll plank the deck only on the starboard side. So the interior is still to be seen. Therefore I have the knees of the deck beams on the portside installed from here.          The frames of the wals of the Great Cabin     Cheers Hartmut

Hi Ben and also, a big thank you to BDGiantman

Ben - thanks for your advice.  After BDGiantman's advice above regarding the side thrusters, I had started trolling the internet trying to find examples of a similar yacht which had one installed.  I wasn't having much success, unfortunately.

However, as you've said, perhaps they aren't as common as one may have thought.  Most certainly, they are not present on the ship's plans.

Nevertheless, it was a worthwhile exercise for me, just for the sake of learning something new.

Thanks and all the very best to you both!

    Cheers

The same as the bow thrusters but in the stern area of the keel.

Your yacht model is looking very good so far, Patrick. The only thing I would say is that in real life a yacht of that size would also have a side thrust system in the stern like the bow. Keep up your great work, I am looking forward to more.

I don't believe that is true as a general statement. I only say this because I interned with a shipbuilder, and while I was there they were constructing a very large (85 meter/280 foot) motoryacht. I was interning with the engineering department, so I had access to all the design plans, etc. I think it had a tunnel thruster at the bow, and it had active roll stabilizers (two sets, fwd and aft). But it didn't have a tunnel thruster aft. And, based on Patrick's drawings, I don't believe this boat has one either.

It really depends on customer requirements, I would think. Plus, with a good electronic control system, you can make the boat crab in and out (move sideways) using just a bow thruster and two props/rudders, thus negating the need for a stern thruster.

Granted, stern tunnels may be a current trend in large yachts - it's not my industry of expertise, so I can defer that I don't follow all the latest designs and trends closely. If you have some examples, I'd love to see them. But in the yachts I've seen, across a variety of sizes and companies (Westport and Christiansen come to mind), I haven't seen a lot of stern tunnel thrusters. I don't think they are that common, probably because it's yet another potential leak point, it complicates construction, and it adds drag.  All that said, I think tunnel thrusters are really cool, and I'd probably throw one in the stern of my own (imaginary) yacht just to do it.

    Making the interrior.

First I made the crew's mess to exercise. The walls were built in the carpenter manner.

At first the base and the stems, which are then filled with plywood.
Messdoor       To find out the right color scheme is not so easy. In the Baroque intensive colors were typical . According to historical sources, and also the pictures from the construction of the replica I use carmine red, cadmium red, light yellow ocher, dark green and prussian blue. This colours were combined with gold at the Statenyacht.   After several attempts I did now use tempera by Schminke and Lucas. Carmine red for the stems, cadmium red for the walls and yellow ocher for the floor in this area                 Cheers Hartmut

Pulling up a late chair myself. Your work building model ships is amazing and I like to follow your blogs. Nice job using the polystyrene to make the hull of your model, that stuff is fun to work with. Would love to see a larger scale model made of her  as well as Symphony.  Been getting back into my own ship model after taking off much more time than I desired to.

Well my followers, I am sorry that I have been gone for so long. Doing all the fun "adult" stuff and with some screwy hours and setbacks. Getting back on the horse again, and slowly making progress on Mary.

Had to rebuild half the keel, got that done and also painted now.

Mostly have been making frames for the ribs of the hull. In the enclosed photo you will see a nearly completed stern plate that will be mounted to the keel after I re-install the deadwood.

So I decided to attempt making my first POF model using plans by Mamoli of Yacht Mary. Enlarged the plans to double the size, so nearly 3/8 scale. I am making this model out of bass wood. So far I have the keel made and am now working on hull frames. Pics enclosed.

    Hi everyone

I've managed to do a bit more on sanding and puttying Majellan's hull. I think the shapely lines are finally starting to emerge now, especially the beautiful flare in the bow. Not bad, I reckon!

Also, in case you're wondering why I haven't done the transom yet, it's because Majellan doesn't have a normal transom as in most boats. Instead, the real ship has a stern door which lcan be lowered to reveal a large storage area for the ship's tender and other assorted gear, such as scuba gear, etc. Needless to say, I'll tackle the stern door when the internal fit out starts.

Anyhow, here are the photos of the progress, so far.

    Cheers

Pulling up a late chair, a beautifully made model. Nice job on the whole ship, as Royal Caroline is a popular model it seems to build.

Modelling Gianna or Aga I had used 0,50 / 1mm planks.  At the Utrecht I use pearwood 12mmx2mm.To work with this kind of planks  was a new experience. They are very hard and difficult to form.

Now the outsite planking is finished. Here are some pictures from yesterday.

Beautiful work, Patrick! Your tender looks incredibly realistic. You should set up your model in a case where the tender is tied up alongside Symphony and looks like floating in the water.
