  1. I can see that you've cut holes in the false deck for your grating. I'm assuming this is your own modification for authenticity as there's nothing on the plans (which suck by the way) that show this. Am I missing something? Do we have the same plans?. Mine seem to be missing alot of details. I'm hacking away at the lower planking now, but as a Carpenter, I would have thought to put the the grating frame in first and plank up to it. The plan suggest to plank the whole thing, then work on the grates. I like your go for it attitude but I don't have that kind of confidence yet. Do you know if there's a better set of plans available? Hope I'm Not being a pest. Thanks, Captain71
  2. Has anyone been to the the San Diego Maritime museum to see the HMS Rose? It was the the ship they used as the surprise in Master and Commander.
  3. Nailing Tool !! Now that's a head slapper. You'd laugh if you saw how I've been doing it. Can I ask you where your got it and what's the best one to get? Your project is looking great. Can't wait to get to that point. Good job.
  4. Thankyou to all "Surprises" for your warm welcome. I work away from home at 3 and 4 day stretches and therefor only have a few hours per week to work on my ship, but of course these projects are all about patients and the very slow process of fine detailing. I'll be following your build logs as well and am looking forward to our exchanges of information and developing friendships.
  5. Hello Navis Factorem. Thanks for the welcome. I looked over some of your build log and I am impressed. I too have read all the O'Brien books and would really like to modify this kit to fit the ship description. I'll be checking in on your progress for advice (with your permission Sir) Thanks again, Captain71
  6. The colors and wood types were hard to decipher and the color chart was pretty much useless. I figured it out by materials count for different areas of planking
  7. Decpihering the various wood types and colors was difficult but I figured it out by count of materials.. The color charts were pretty much useless.
  8. Keel looks pretty dead on. it was a little warped but I kept it straight with an adjustment strip I made on a board then glued the false deck to hold it.
  9. First sailing vessel and first Build log. I started my ship on December 27. and have been taking pictures that I've yet to post. I have built boats before (real and model) but have never done rigging . I'm starting with a moderate level kit before I try my first scratch built. Iv'e been getting advice from your forums since I decided to go for it. I'm looking forward to more feedback and sharing lessons learned with this community of like interested friends.
  10. Thanks BilgeRat and ccoyle for the tip on searching the Build Logs. I found a guy "Waitoa" that's just ahead of me on this Model. The wood issue seems the same for everyone. The Tanganyika, beach wood and box wood are all the same sizes and look exactly the same. The way I finally figured it out was to count the pieces required in each section and deduced the amounts of differn't woods it would require. Waitoa said he kinda took a chance and went for it. When I saw the planks he chose, I felt better about my plan. So thanks to Waitoa's courage, I hoisted anchor, spread canvas and and recovered my course. I'll be starting a log soon. Been takin pics.
  11. Thanks for your log. I was really havin a hard time with determining what decking and planking goes where. The wood color chart is useless since the shade difference is so subtle. I tried going by measurement but not only are much of the lath the same size but I don't get the measurements. for instance what is 5, 4x5 lath I didn't see any of that size in mm. Anyway at least I know the lower deck is the lightest lath "Tanganyka" right? it sure doesn't match the chart Thanks for letting me check out your log. Very helpful. That is if you got it right Ha Ha.
  12. Hello. Well Iv'e already dug in on my HMS Surprise 1:75 scale by Mamoli. I'm doing some lower decking now but I'm having a hellavatime identifying the wood. They have a color chart for the wood but that's pretty useless since they are all mostly shades of dark brown.. The measurements like 0, 5x4 mean nothing to me. if that,s millimeters, there are no such sizes in the kit. All the specification charts are in Italian. I've looked around the net and Thank goodness it's not just me. If anyone has put this one together, I'd appreciate alittle help with understanding the deck and planking descriptions and measurements. Pictures of the the laths are broken up into many types of wood and the shades are too subtle to use the chart. I tried too go by size but I dont understand the measurement chart. Maybe someone has figured this out and can give me a clue. Pictures even better. Thanks. Sincerly, FNG
  13. Thanks. I'm goin for the Mamoli Kit then. Sounds like the best deal and I haven't heard any complaints. I'm spreading canvas, Lads.
  14. Ok, I found an HMS surprise kit. It's by Mamoli. 1:75th scale. Anyone know about this one. It's $449.00 and $119.00 more if I want the sails. I don't know if talking prices is considered "not done" on these forums but it's quite an investment for me and I need to make sure I'm not getting a bad deal.
  15. Thanks for all your input on the HMS surprise kit. I'm glad I asked. I will never deal with disreputable companies' that pirate. I feel like a knuckle head for not knowing about these practices. Thanks for the warning and I've noted the list of companies to look out for. Glad I trusted my instincts.
  16. I'm a confident modeler and have built a few good boats, but This will be my first 18th century tall ship kit. It's the HMS surprise. I know its a fictional ship , based on other ships. but I'm a Patrick O'Brien fan and have been waiting for a kit to come out. I found one on eBay. that looks ok but just before I committed to buy. I got worried. Its a Chinese, laser cut kit 1:75 scale. I cant find a brand name in the description. if you go to eBay and look up HMS surprise kit. you'll see it. Its the $398.00 one and says Russian Federation. Does anyone have any info on this kit or know someone who bought it?
