Angarfather reacted to Mirabell61 in SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse 1897 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - scale 1:144 - POF - first German four stacker of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line
Build log part 60...
Update,
making the "collapsible" lifeboats...
These are shorter, flatter and a bit narrower than the larger lifeboats. The appearance is more that of a "river barge", but the capacity is just like the that of the larger boats. The hardshell-part untill slightly above the waterline is made in wood, and clinker planked. The side flexible textile / canvas bulwark is shown in collapsed mode, in order to staple two or three boats under the last pair of davits in the total boats row.
The raw mini models (I´m doing 6 of them) are made in the well proven way with silicone mold and resin castings......
Nils
Shape of the collapsible boats, (here still without shaped interior area)
"Clinker planking" resembled with 3mm wide stripes of aluminium foil
tapering the the overlapping stripes to the ends
making a mold for the outer shape hull
here the plug for the outer shape
Here the plug for the interior shape
This is the second plug for the interior contours of the boat, resin cast in between outer skin and interior plug
raw, collapsible boat compared with the size of the the larger boats
result : raw cast boat hull....
three story high, will put some additional spacer / supporting lugs under second and third boat

Hello, mates!
we, my Admiral and me, returned from a 14 days journey on board of the Richard With, a ship of the norwegian HurtigRuten. A very impressive time from Bergen (Nor) to Kirkenes and back to Bergen.
But now its time to continue modelling the Utrecht. The last parts on deck. Some cleats and the skylight of the big cabin. To make this part was an most interesting job. It is eight cornerd.
ANd her is a pic all over the deck
Cheers Hartmut

Hello Guys!
Thanks for the kind words to my works!
Here again some pics of further details.
To make the railing around the stairs was a special pleasure, since I have not worked with metal for a long time. It's from 3 and 2mm brass, soldered with silver solder.
On the supports came still a few balls, which comes close to the baroque style.
And here are the other parts which are new on deck. Four cleats, two pin racks and the bearings of the leeboards
Have a nice weekend!
Cheers

Many thanks to Nils, Dadodude, Mark and also the "Likes"
I am now modelling all the parts which are still missing on deck.
The hatches of the forecastle.
Caboose chimney
Making the Sky light of the crew mess
In the evening the CEO of the company came along to visit the ship.
His was quite satisfied and invited the Crew to red vine.
Cheers! Hartmut

Another step. Utrecht needs a stand now. I am rarely a minimalist. Only for the stands. Therefore I like to use plexi glass for this job.
It s from 6mm Plexi and a 9mm roundbeam, assembled with two M4 screws
My Admirals did say: Beautiful, she floats over the ground.
Best regards Hartmut

Bevor I can start to carve and bring in the figurhead (a lion ) I have to make some little parts to finish the bow.
The reinforcement of the stem to hold the loop for the gammoning ropes and the knee to support the sprit
The reinforcement is from 0,8mm brass. The loop from 2mm brass soldered into the brass sheet.
Besst regards Hartmut

To model the gallion is a little bit fiddly. The drawings doesn't show the real dimension of the rails and knees. So I started first to make the lower and upper knees.
After this I could find out the dimensions of the upper rail
Next job will be the carving of the filler and the figurhead.

After several weeks with carving, I now again have to made some technical parts of the Utrecht.
First the windlass
On board of the Utrecht the catheads and the windlass are one technical system. I have made it from swiss pear, the rolls are from brass
It was no problem to turn the shaft of the windlass from beech wood
Milling in the tooth ring of the backflow barrier
In position
Finished
Best regards Hartmut

Some pics from the finished decorations of the Windows.
Now I have to carve some figures. I tried at first to carve the two sea animals which will "live" on the reling. They are not so complicated as the galions lion and the others. They are named dolphins, but I think that they are typical baroque seamonsters.
