    Hi Patrick,
    Thanks for greetings!
I am going to build full-hulled model. I thought about variant of the waterline hull with setting in a moulded sea. But its underwater part is too fine to hide it under water))

Hello, the capstan is growing. But now I have to pause, I hope for only a short time. The man in the saw pit are on strike. That means my circular saw needs repair. But here the newest pictures. The paint is't already dry, so new they are

I have not too good drawing of this schooner, but I have found some photos of its and some photos of its models.

The initial stages of construction doesn't present a particular interest, but here you can see some photos:

I pressed them from the front face so the dimples are pushed back when the plate is pressed to the hull.
Mind you, this is thinner peel-n-stick copper at a much larger scale (1:36), and done with nothing near the precision of your work - I offer it only to show the result I got which compared well with actual copper plating I've installed and in photos.

I am much happier now that I am redoing the rigging!

Daniel. Yes the silk is fly tying thread

I have made a day back on the running rigging and working on the ships boats while waiting for glue to dry

The picture is I the launch with its mast and cover made in cigarette paper soaked in CA. This is also used for the man ship sails

Thanks Michael! Yes I did manage to cut a stay by accident and it was ten times more difficult to install with the shrouds in place!

I think at this or any scale the choice of material for the rigging is key to getting the right feel for the ship. I have been using bead thread called "silamide" which is quite fine and not hairy, I have used this for the stays and shrouds.

For the finer rigging I am using fishing fly tying strand called "Nano Silk" this is very fine, non hairy and extremely strong. It is however made of many fine strands which are not bound together very well and tends to unravel while working. I impregnate it in white glue to bind it. Cutting it is very difficult and can only be done with a brand new blade.

One advantage with using the brass tube for masts and spars is that I can attach fine wire loops in the tube ends for rigging to pass through. A good source of very fine brass wire is the "net" around some bottles of wine (also a good excuse to stock up the cellar!)

I have now finally completed the standing rigging, the bowsprit rigging was more difficult than expected!

    Spars next!

I am an admirer of your builds.

In numbers, this is the second and as a complete project, this is the first. I have done a few plastic aero modelling and nothing in ship modelling.

Being in-experienced, there were many ups-downs; such times - I used to come to this site and read again & again on the many builds - get charged and will return to my work-bench.

If you like this model - all the credit goes to my friends at MSW whose builds are a lesson to learn and enjoy.

Thanks Mike, I will keep your advice in mind.

    HI,

The rigging is complete. This is the first time, I have done rigging. There may be mistakes. Would appreciate suggestions for corrections.

I have not made the rigging permanent - not glued. Due to space constraints, I may need to pack this model for paving way for another one. So, the rigging and mast can be removed, packed and redone whenever need be.

    Here are some more pics...

No power tools are used - only hand tools. Hence, the model may not be of quality; but it is an attempt to learn the basics of model ship building and enjoy doing it.

    Thanks,
    Rao

I repeated this picture to indicate the way I use for fixing the boat on support.
With this small and weightless boats the structures have bigger weight and the boat easy falls from support.
In keel, on the distance and position of support pilars practice holes and put inside small tubes from medical needles or other type. It is important that the external diameter of tube is smaller for 1 mm than the tick  of the keel, better more but for this scale is difficult.
On the support I put two pieces of rod, diameter that fit in tubes and a bit shorter than the tubes.
The rods are put with small angle so it is necessary small force to insert the rods in tubes, in this way the boat is fixed to the support but can be easy removed.

I think that nobody on this forum need the presentation of the original, of "the mother of regatta's boats" the .
Maybe the best description was the dialogue between the Queen and the Commodore oduring the regatta around the Isle of Wight, August, 22, 1851:

Queen Victoria: Who is the first,
    Commodore:"America, your Majesty."
Queen Victoria: Who is the second,
Commodore:"There is no second, your Majesty."

As the other models, in small scale 1:200, reduced Mamoli drawings in 1:66 , in fact i had the complete kit, i made it an the big one was a marriage gift for one cousin

The model was made with complete double planking, second planking with walnut 1*1mm, the deck is also some light wood, strips 1*1mm.

As in that time (before internet) I hadn't to many references, but honestly I didn't searched to much, i decided to put the table (improbable elliptic shape 😕 ) in the "salon" undo the big windowed portion, then on the table put the chart , square/triangle and the other "useful" parts )
Honestly I was convinced that it could't be visible, which is right, without lens you could't see nothing but some colored, a bit bigger, dust

On all models so on this on the keel I made two small holes and put inside pieces of  small piles (part of medic needles or similar ) so for the support later i use small profiles with pieces of steel rods fitting in that pipes. The rods are slightly curved so for put in or out is needed some force, nothing extra but enough to hold firmly together the support and the model with simply possibility to separate.

On the last photo are the three models, Flying Fish and America in 1:200 and Shenandoah in 1:100
    as a comparison of dimensions

Also in this model is evident the out scale of elements  but I hadn't the patience nor the materials and tools to made it in scale.

To finish the model I have to arrange the rigging and the sails which I usually make from the paper which could be find inside  shoes or cloth boxes, also the support has to be made.

These are mainly of the decks and bulkheads, etc. Future build logs will show the masts, bowsprit, figurehead, gold decorative work and the rigging (which I must admit, is the thing I enjoy the least and regularly stuff up the most!!). Anyhow, pls enjoy these photos first.

Almost nearing the end of the scratch build of this miniature Dorade. I've added some more rigging, lifelines and a lifreaft (which still needs some cleaning up and final detail work) and also black hull fenders.

Since I couldn't work on my 1:48 scale Triton cross section as much as I would like I decided to make a smaller one in a bottle. I went mostly by memory for the design it is made mostly from card and balsa wood the cannons were turned from bamboo on my drill press all the coloring was done with redwood stain and black Rust-Oleum spray paint sprayed into a jar then thinned (probably a bit too much note the bleeding on one of the cannon carriages) with acetone. I made the model in pieces so that I could fit it threw the neck of the bottle then I assembled it inside the bottle it came out a little crooked but looks OK. I still need to put on some finishing touches on the outside of the bottle before I'm done it took less then two days to to get to this point.

I did it! I did it! Well, I sorta did it. The compromise was that I couldn't do the hull as a clinker hull, due to its tiny size, difficulty in making the planks thin enough and carving a rabbett line. There are certain realities in size that just can't be overlooked, afterall.

Anyhow, the hull has five frames, including the transom. It's planked with wood, although the frames and keel are made out of card.

There's still much finishing off, including the deck boards, painting, oars, etc that need to be fitted. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy the photos!!!

    I'm a happy man!

    Hi all

Rainbow, all of a sudden has turned red! No stress, though. The reason is that I decided to paint the whole hull with a Matt Red colour. This will then be the colour of the hull under the water line. Once I'm satisfied that the paint looks good, I'll the paint the top sides gloss black. Hope this all makes sense.

I've also planked the floors onto which the internal bulkheads and accommodation will reside. Some of the bulkheads can be seen temporarily propped up in the photos.

Well, overall, progress may be slow, but, it's still heaps of fun, nonetheless.

    Hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers

    Patrick
