  1. Hello Rich, If you scroll down the list you will find the Victory Paint Set I have purchased. http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/admiralty_paint_sets.html#aAPS9014W These particular paints have been designed and colour matched for period ships. If you type in HMS Victory you should get the official site, tried posting the link but lost my post 3 times lol. One thing to watch for is not to paint red ochre on the outside of the gunport linings, inner faces only and the back of the gunport lids.
  2. Very nice Paul. I know what you mean, think I started the Racehorse must be 9 or 10 years ago, lack of understanding, the kit and the instructions lol, which was at the time supposedly a good beginners kit. I lost heart with it put most back in the box, same time I lost heart with SIBs, moved into airbrushing and Pinstriping. A chance conversation with a work colleague made me look at the model again. So much so I reckon I can finish her to a nice model, it will never be perfect, or historically accurate but I should be pleased lol. Have had to do so much to get it where it is now.. Might even start a partial build log from here on in.
  3. Was heading the Caldercraft route, but honestly didn't have a place I could display and enjoy the model, so had to opt for a smaller version. As you have shown a bit of time and patience even kit bashing, it has the makings of a fine model, so compromises had to be made.
  4. Lol thought it might be a bit bigger but that is a heck off a difference, never mind I will think of something for it. Already have an idea, along the lines of a little name plaque for the model an can crown it with the casting, think it would look pretty sweet, so nothing lost just need to make the etched one more appealing, nearly went for the 1/98 Mantau casting set, juggled the £8 compared to £55... Hmm wonder if an email to Corwall models would they be able to give the size of the Mantau stern casting.
  5. Here you go Paul, seem to have issues when taken with the iPad lol, it attaches the right way up then displays upside down, then seems to revert to the correct way in the light box viewer some times. The cast piece is extremely maleable, would be interested to see what the actual size difference is, as on the actual ship the bottom of the POW overhangs the decorative trim as well.
  6. It is beautiful, I'll try and get a good pic and rough dimensions before my wife hides them away completely. Thinking I may have to file it down a bit all depends on the space. Will try and get a pic up tomorrow for you. Re the wheels, I was ordering extras for the build, but notice the kit only seems to contain two anchors, with the two sheet anchors missing, so will need to order them. It's terrible, will be July before I am aloud to start . Still crack on with the Racehorce.
  7. I have your build blog bookmarked as well Josh, very nice job you made of it as well. Strength to strength Paul, looking superb. On an aside in collecting bits, picked up two of the 16mm wheels very nicely made, going to be fun putting them together. Picked up the 1/72 Caldercraft stern casting, will adapt this to fit, with some judicious pruning , but it is a nice piece of casting.
  8. Chart drawers? Think it's is a difficult one regarding the kit... The Caldercraft is a little bigger, is supposedly all singing and dancing but costs 2.5 to 3 x the price. For a lot of modelers it is probably acceptable if you built it from the box....as in as you can only really see one wheel that's why they supply one ...... The flat brass etch pieces instead of cast, am I right to say that the "doorway" entrance had to be built as it wasn't supplied as a cast item, going by your photos. The other side. Is you would have thought that the essentials for detail would have been supplied. Regardless if mine looks half as good as yours, I will be well satisfied, though I am heading down the paint route.
  9. The wheels look great Paul. So that is two compasses and a lantern to add to the scratch build notes, you probably already know but a bit of info for others looking in, the binnacle houses two compasses with a lantern in the middle.
  10. No not yet, found a deal on this one, my wife has bought it for me as part of my 50th in July. Currently working on HMS Racehorse that I started 8 years ago, has fought me all the way that I got disheartened by it. A chance conversation with a colleague, made me have another look. So much so it should make a pleasing model when finished. After the Victory I think both Cutty Sark and Thermoplyae will be on the to do list. With your build I can see what I want to scratch build, really couldn't justify the space for it lol, however I am eyeing up perhaps a cross section model along the way to compliment it. You have given me plenty food for thought, along with all the photographs sketches etc.......I know what you mean by the mostly hidden, but my wife knows me ha ha, as I have discussed various aspects of this kit, she recognises the "but I'd know" as I make a supplementary shopping list. Andy
  11. Very nicely done indeed mate, turned out superb. Think I may still go for those brass ones they look sweet, building up a shopping list, caldercraft yarns, paints, wheels, cannon balls, etc..........toying with the 1/98 castings as well lol.
  12. Closest i have possibly seen http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/rb-ships-wheels.html Brass wheel 16mm
  13. Looking great Paul. Have been building up my refference collection, the haynes manual, the anatomy of a ship 100 gun Victory, HMS Victory first Rate 1765, the Basl Lavis HMS Victory as she was 1805. Copies of the 24 pen and ink sketches Christine Warburton was commissioned to do in 1963 think it was. Numerous photographs etc lol. Really enjoying the research mixed with continuing battle with HMS Racehorse Regards the First Rate 1765 book, stunning wealth of photographs, nearly all, that it consists of. Loving your build and the details being shown Andy
  14. I couldn't tell from the picture , but the top decorative piece with the a POW feathers did you just paint the etching, have been considering looking at the Mantau 1/98 casting kit.
  15. Castings question Paul, Did you look at the larger Caldercraft figurehead arrangement, also what have you decided for the stern?
  16. Is it to do with hull curvature that throws the measurements off when related to the plans? Oh the joys of what I have to look forward to Busy studying stacks of reference material and making notes. Had been wondering if I could "build" the etchings up then guild them, got plenty of leaf. Need to ask Paul if he went the caldercraft route or what difference size wise by using the Mantau 1/98 castings that are available.
  17. Just found your log Dom, great start. One question, what diameter cannon balls did you use 2mm? Any luck on the stern decoration as in finding a casting? Well two in the end
  18. Cheers Paul. Yes will be going down the copper route, been reading different builds, history etc..... Can see several areas that will be scratch built, also going down the "Trafalgar" colour route as well. The lifeboats in the kit, are they wooden or plastic? Busy looking at options for figures as well, they look like many hours of fun ahead on their own.
  19. Bit late i know with an aside comment, was just reading your experiments with varnish. I play with paints a lot, just a word of caution to those that may not know, never use a waterbased product then go over with an oil or uerathane based product, this can lead to a world of hurt. Waterbased will work over uerathane, but some caution is required over an oil based product, particularily when it comes to clearcoats, varnish, laquer what ever. Can result in little belemishes known as fish eyes. These can be easily seen on topcoats. Quick question, read that the original copper plates were 8ft x 14", what size foil tape and measurements did you use? Many thanks Andy
