dkuehn got a reaction from Blackreed in Golden Hind by dkuehn - Dusek - Scale 1:72
I have the yards on and most of the rigging done, there are a few more things I need to rig. Then all that's left are the flag poles, anchors and bulwark guns. Should be done in a couple days.

The planking is slow going. The planks are 2mm x 3mm and difficult to work with. You really have to use heat to get them to bend to shape. I am used to soaking planks and then they are flexible enough to work with. These planks can soak for days and still break if you try to bend them around the bow.
The poorly run planks are pretty obvious. I haven't totally decided what I'm going to do. If I paint it, like on the box, most of the planks are covered and won't show the incorrect plank lines, but there is enough to certainly be noticeable. Model Expo had a sale and I bought some boxwood strips, they arrive here tomorrow. I actually bought them without a specific use in mind, but now I'm thinking that I should use them on this ship to fix the run of the planks. That is probably what I'll do, but I'm not 100% sure yet.
Here is a picture from yesterday, I have added a few more planks since the picture. In my Model Expo order I have some other tools that will help me shape the top of the bulwarks, they are pretty deformed now, as I was planking in the wrong line, so ignore the random shape at the top.

For the ratlines I photocopy the full size plans and cut out the ratlines and use that as a reference for tying them. (another post for extra procrastination)

I have finished up the shrouds and the port side gunport doors.
Now I need to start the ratlines, so I figured it would be best to do another post as an effective way to procrastinate actually tying the ratlines.

The bulk of the shrouds are rigged, still have some mizzen mast shrouds to do and I need to tie the shroud pairs at the top on all the masts. Then it's lots of ratlines mixed in with gunport doors. The guns on the bulwarks I'll do after the ratlines, they tend to catch the line as I'm tying it.

I've been working on the deck fixtures and the beakhead. The beakhead was a little fiddly, but I added support beyond what the instructions said and that made it more manageable for my rough fingers. I still have plenty to go on the deck and then the gunport doors and channels.

I have been working, but it has been slow going and I've made changes with paint that I wasn't happy with. On the box the top color is a light blue, I don't really like that so I went with a darker blue color. That ended up looking really bad, so I painted over it with some yellow ochre that I had left over from my Lady Nelson.
I had mentioned the possibility of doing a second planking with the boxwood that I ordered from Model Expo. The wood that I received didn't look like what I was expecting and I'd rather have an incorrect planking line than the yellow planks. I did however use some of that wood to plank the decks. I saw in another thread how the laser etched deck sheets bubbled up on another Dusek kit, so I decided to just plank it with the wood I got from Model Expo.
I'm a little heavy handed and have had to repair the bulwarks several times where they are above deck level, they are easy to break if you aren't careful. The next thing I have to do is the bulwarks framing pieces and then start on the deck fixtures.
It is far from perfect, but I'm happy with it.
