  1. Pinning is very good, gives extra strength. In the best of worlds people do not touch models but my ( and probably you all) experience is that people just cannot resist touching models. Most often "fragile" parts, and oops they break something. So pinning is smart! I wonder why non modelers need to touch things? And since they are non modelers they do not know, if they absolutely have to touch, how to touch lightly or the more sturdy parts (like the hull…) It is always the small, fragile parts.
  2. I have not had a lot of time these last weeks for proper building, instead I have only had a few minutes here and there. So I have done only a few small things, things that do not take a long time or need a long sitting to finish. So I have done the cleats, polishing them a bit. Fixing the mast and yard arm and the lookout post and rudder. For the mast I used my hobby lathe for the first time! it worked very well. The rudder is not finished though, still needs a few of the hinges sections to be glued in place. Hopefully I get some more free time this week for some serious building! But a few minutes here and there is a lot better than nothing.
  3. @ Elijah, thanks alot! yes I will stain the boat in the same color. I like that color very much, looks "medieval" so to speak.
  4. Work have unfortunately effectively stopped me from building for some time. Hopefully I will have more time in a week or so. Very annoying.
  5. A picture more from the side and with the color and shades cleaned up. In the foreground is the life boat. I have two planks left on the life boat before adding a few more details. Also working on the oars for that one. The hull is more or less done for now. I´m preparing the cleats, mast and yard arm. For the mast I´m going to test my Proxxon mini lathe! Looking forward to that. I like this kit a lot, good instructions and easy to follow. Although I havn´t done the rigging yet I don´t think that will be much of a problem as there is not much of it. I think I would rate this model as a good first kit. (big words from some one with ONE model under the belt… )
  6. I think you should be very pleased with your build! It looks really, really good. I´m very impressed!
  7. I though I´d share a picture of my workstation. Not very big unfortunately but better than nothing. But now for the reason I took these pictures. I bought a slim "cupboard" lightning system and mounted it under the wall hung cabinet. It gives some extra light but what is even better it gives nice ambient light which eliminates shadows as it is another light source apart from the hobby lamp. I bought mine from IKEA but I´m sure most stores that sells walk in closets or large cupboards or cloth cabinets has them. The only down side is that it was cheap (all good hobbies should be expensive… )
  8. Today it all begins to come together! Glued the fore and aft castle into place. The life boat begins to take shape. That is, by the way, a fiddly little model. It is fun but annoying to glue those parts into place with too large fingers It might be difficult to see but this is the beginning of an oar! Six of these will be on the lifeboat. The basic shape is done but I will do some "fine sanding". What might be a bit tricky is to get all six identical. I would like the oar to be a bit thinner but am not sure how to manage that and keep it round. I got this far by chucking the wood into the dremel and use it as a lathe combined with sand paper. But now the oar is so thin that it might break as the "end" is too "heavy" and starts to oscillate. Well, well, it is just an oar, or six
  9. This is how I blackened the anchors and will use on the photo etched parts on the rudder. I found it on a website selling gun parts! It works very well and gives good coverage and it "sticks" very well to the metal. On my previous boat I painted the metal parts with black paint. I more or less knew that the paint would not adhere very well but did not know what else to use. But then I found this! It is necessary though to clean the parts carefully. I wash it first in hot water and soap and the put them in a small container with very pure gasoline and scrubs it a bit with a tooth brush. finally pick it up with a small pair of pliers to avoid any grease on the metal. Just drop it into a small cup with brass black and watch it turn black. Great stuff but not very healthy from the text on the bottle. Be careful
  10. Thanks!! I stained all the major subassemblies today and have arranged them in a mock up of the finished ship, except main mast. The planking of the life boat is going well, even if I have only done one plank on each side. I first glued the planks to the frames in the middle of the boat and let them dry. Then I glued them to the bow and stern and fixed them with small clamps. It is fairly slow but worked well. I have also sanded them down quite a bit, especially where the join the bow and stern and where they "twist" in more than one dimension. That way I avoided having to soak them. The paper in/on the ship is to protect the deck when I stain the inside of the hull. Also my workplace is not very tidy… It is small and though I try to keep it clean, building is much more fun than cleaning so it is never tidy enough
  11. Yes they are plywood, hmm, did not think of them coming apart. Thanks for the heads up! I started to sand the first plank a bit. I trimmed it from 1mm to about .8mm. The ends i trimmed a bit more. I think that will be sufficient without soaking them actually. You are correct that they are shaped but they still need a bit of "bending" to fit properly.
  12. On each plank I have written down its number and which end points forward. The planks are only one millimetre thick but when they are this short it is "thick" and makes it difficult to bend properly. Especially the ones that need to bend in two dimensions. Also, since everything is so small it might be difficult to use ordinary clamps. What I will do, I think, is to sand the planks a bit to make them thinner. And then soak them of course. Then fix them in place and let dry and then glue them in place. We´ll see how it goes because tomorrow I will start!
  13. Long time, no update. But finally some work done. I´ve had a little commission work that had to take precedence but now I´m building again. Aft castle is done and waiting to be stained. Also begun on the lifeboat. That is a neat little model in itself. It is built in clinker style just like the Kogge itself. It will be fun to build such a small model. Actually there is not that much left on the Kogge. Mainly putting together all the subassemblies, forward and aft castle, mast, and cargo and some detailing. After that is the rigging of course but this model does not have a huge amount of rigging.
  14. Great painting. No need at all to feel ashamed of that. I especially like the lion head. Nice work!
  15. Parts for the aft castle. It went together fairly well but the deck twisted a bit when I glued the planking to it. It can be seen in the picture that the most left corner is a bit off the ground. I will try to glue a couple of "support beams" to the inside to try to straighten it out. Otherwise I will have to force it in place and glue it and hold until the glue sets. It is always a small hazard to glue two large flat pieces together in my opinion, the risk that it twists a bit is always there. I have also started to stain the model! did that this morning. Forward castle done and started on the hull. I´m not actually completely done with the hull, four little square pieces needs to be put in place. The four little squares mark their position. That is the reason I did not stain the entire hull. I used dark oak stain, it gives it a very nice look I think. the deck will only be varnished with a clear satin coat. I have not decided how to stain/coat the capstan, hatches and what not on the dec. Either varnish them or stain them with the same color of the hull? What say you? Inside of the hull will be dark stained though. Last but not least a picture of the cannon for my daughters modelship. I bought it a the Wasa museum. Compared to the "doors" we have done it is vastly out of scale, which does not bother her the least
  16. And above all, there is no rush! If a plank takes 3 hrs to get done properly it takes 3 hrs. Sooner or later it will speed up as you get more experience but there is no rush. So what if it takes time, unless you have to be finished by a certain date. It will be finished when it is finished. Very nice build so far! Great work.
  17. Don´t forget that wet wood swells a bit. So if it fits perfectly when wet and full of water it might be a bit small when it has dried out. Your build looks great!. I like the wood plugs in your deck. True to scale or being able to see are, for me, two different things. I guess it comes down to if you want the model "scale perfect" or pleasing to the eye from normal viewing distance. A lot of detail cannot be seen if it is in scale and therefore it looks bland and "not real" in a way. If you over scale some details it looks better but is grossly inaccurate. It all depends on what you like.
  18. Some more advice for painting metal. First scrub the figure with hot water, a little dishwashing detergent and a toothbrush. Let it dry. Prime with GW black primer ( GW = Games Workshop). It is a very good primer. After the figure is painted give it a coat of clear varnish, either dull, semi shiny or shiny, depending on what you like.
  19. About the eyes. Try using a light light grey. This to avoid the "pop eye look". One trick is to paint a horizontal sliver of grey as the white of the eyes. After that a thin horizontal sliver of black as the " eye" itself across the grey, almost like a cross. A brush with a good point is necessary, use fairly watery paint to paint the black. After this you paint the skin color around it, "shaping" the eye with skin color. Basically keeping an almond shape of light grey and black. But at this scale, (the figure looks like about 1:72 scale, the eyes would not be visible at "normal viewing distance". That is a person looking at the ship from about 1,5-2 feet away would not see the eyes so omitting them is an option.
  20. @Cobr@, Thanks a lot! The forward castle is done with its support ribs on the outside, The bowsprit is attached and I´ve started on the rear castle. On the model itself I have added the two thin ribs on the inside of the spars. To the top left, below the mitre box is four rounded pieces of balsa wood glued together. That will be a door to a ship I´m building with my daughter. She comes in and sees me build and of course, being five years old, wants to help. As I´m a bit leery of her helping me with the model I let her help on a "special boat" she and I are building... So she sands a few pieces and gets to glue them together and she is happy. Sooner or later that might end up as another ship model, or not She has already built the ship cannon for that model. Picture might follow.
  21. I´ve added the ribs to the inside of the forward castle. Progress has been slow these last two weeks. I have only been able work a few minutes here and there for some time. Frustrating to sit down and then be interrupted ten minutes later and so on. I think that this will be better from now on though as I will be able to get some more free time. But, slow progress is also progress! And I´m in no particular hurry.
  22. Some of the subassemblies added to the deck. The forward castle is not glued in place. I placed it there to check the placement.
  23. The great thing about hobbies is that it is up to the individual to define it… Some people like building and do very little research, others research a lot and build much less. Others focus on other things, but everyone is part of the same hobby! Basically "to each his own". I like to build or paint things. Of course I want them to be fairly accurate but, for me, the joy of constructing things with my hands is much more important than accuracy. I like to buy and build models and very rarely do much research, I just build Other hobbyists focus on other things. In my eyes, no one is more right or wrong, we just enjoy different parts of the same hobby.
