What a wonderfull work B E, I have read this thread now 3 times trying to absorb all the tips you have given. Soon I will start with my Le Glorieux and hope mine will be a 10th of what you have accomplished here. I would be very happy.

I tried to enter you log on the link you gave previous but even though i registerd it doesnt seem to work unfortunately.

A simple man’s guide to sail making (part two)

The sail has been cut out complete with a hem all the way round, the positions of the cringles have been marked along the edges.
The hems are folded over and a small slit where the cringles are to be placed is made with the scalpel.
0.1mm line is then placed along the hem inside the fold and fished thro with a small pointy thing, to form the cringles.
This is the position so reached.

After the first few cringles have been formed the hem is glued down using neat PVA to hold the cringles in place.

In the pic below all the cringles have now been put into place.

Down each side from the top are the three pairs of Reef cringles, followed by three Bowline cringles; the leech line is attached thro’ the top two.

At the clue is the cringle for the blocks..

Across the foot of the sail are the cringles for the buntlines.

    Bands, patches and linings
Additional strengthening pieces of ‘cloth’ are now required to be added to the sail. These are all attached to the aft side of the sail as shown above (Fore side on British ships.)
    They comprise:
The reef bands, three narrow strips thro’ which the reef points are fixed.
The Patches small squares of material below the reef cringles at the leech.
The Top lining, the most distinctive addition whose purpose is to protect the sail from wear by friction against the mast top.
The Lining cloths which are strengthening strips staggered down the leech of the sail.
A bit like wallpapering this part, cut it to size, slap on the paste, and stick it down.

With the light behind the full effect of the various additions can now be seen.
A series of holes were drilled thro’ the Reef bands to take the Reef points, and again on the Head lining to take the Robands.
Some 150 reef points are required on the Topsail.

Once the sails are in place they can be manipulated at any later stage by the simple expediency of wetting them down.

The Mizen sail, the Brails that control the sail furling are all in place, there are matching lines on each side of the sail.

a simple wet down of the sail and haul on the Brails and the sail is loosely furled.

Modelspan is a tough material and in my workings with I had no failures.

I would use modelspan for kitting out models certainly up to 1:96 scale.

    Cheers,

I understand you mtaylor except OOB? What does that mean?

Yes I should experiment a little to see how it goes, good point!

    Thanks a lot

I dont want to sound like a stubborn guy but im thinking about this a little bit and as by myself.

Would a brass wire with a diameter of 0.3 mm be riggid enough to make those eyebolts im wondering and than dont forget the diameter should be 0.7mm.
I have a feeling this would be like a hair. Than when this would be possible it needs to be set on the boat. Im thinking it would be very fragile and those sets as mentioned before would be easier to handle.

Im not saying its not possible but im a bit sceptic to be honest

Yes I was thinking too do it by myself too. Thats probably cheaper but its a bit more time consuming 74 canons using total 5 eyebolts so that going to be 370 hahaha. But its a way thanks for the link I think I will try to do that

Oops... sorry.  OOB = Out Of Box  in otherwords just the way the manufacturer supplied it.

I'm looking forward to your results.

    Hi All,

Yesterday arrived this nice kit and I thought let make a build log from my progress. I havent seen this kit here on the forum yet so maybe it fun for other to see how much I'll struggle to get this job done. And maybe others will give me some ideas and recommendations.

It is my 3rd kit that im going to build and seems pretty difficult. And most probably its going to be more difficult when I will start with the rigging as far as I can see I will have to make some modifications to get that job done. I think I will order a dremel or such thing to drill some holes where needed, but thats for later. In the next couple of days I will start with some primer on the decks and hull and start painting the canons (there are 74). I will try (as I im trying to do with my Revell Bounty kit as well) to make the ship look like its used.
The kit the Heller develloped is the Le Glorieux at the time it was still from the French. This ship has been in a war in the Caribean during the time that the French and Spanish tried to conquerer Jamaica. But the English won and took the Le Glorieux in the fleet (so far about the hostory of this ship)

He some pictures of the kit:

    The box

    The hull

The sails, I'm not sure if I will use these. I like to make real sails but this kit is from plastic and I dont know if the masts can handle the weight of real sails.

I printed some drawings in A1 format for a nice reference

Well I hope everybody will enjoy following this log. I will try to show the first progress soon.

These are the smallest they have. What would you take for sizes of deadeyes and rigging blocks (forgive me if i call them by the wrong name)?

I have a couple of deadeyes in order from 4mm and 3 mm plus a couple of rigging block of 2.5 mm. Im affraid those will not work for this scale.

The eyelets are cheap about 4 GBP and I would pay 40GBP to send it to Brazil. So Im thinking to make a whole package if I would add small light things the transport costs will not change.

    Ray,
If you can find some thin brass wire of the right size you can make those eyebolts.  Have a look here:  http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/4308-in-need-of-tips-and-techniques-for-making-eyebolts

    Hi Ray,

those o-rings are brass eyelets with 0.3mm diameter. Maybe you can have a look on the web? If you can't find any I will give you the link.

    thanks for the compliments!

Wow great job from you two on the Superbe.

Lukas I like very much what you have done with the canons. Those small o-rings on those canons how did you do that? The hatches for the canons are very nice as well. I will going to read your log very detailed later on and after that im going to shoot of some questions
