Dutchman reacted to mmotherw in Lady Nelson by mmotherw - Amati/Victory Models - Scale 1:64
Christmas is over and the New Year has started so time to make a start on the Lady Nelson.
I took the bulkheads off the sheet and tidied the edges and did a dry fitting and found that a few sat a bit lower than the top of the false keel. Having read a few blogs I saw that adding a small bit of card was a simple way to raise them, so I did that first and that brought them in line.
I then found that the bulkheads were loose and could rock side wards so I was worried that they may not glue in place horizontially so I added more padding on the sides to make them a tighter fit.
I've not glued them in place yet, I'm going to bevel them first. That's coming next....

At last post I had 3 strakes per side to install. These proved to be the most difficult of the entire job! The hull is finally planked! A major milestone.
Overall I'm happy with the results, especially at the bow and amidships. The stern could have turned out better with more uniformity in the terminal widths of the planking, but I did the best I could given the weird geometry of the hull aft of the final bulwark.
Next up is treenailing, then fairing the hull. Once that's all done I'll turn to completely rebuilding the transom and figure out a way to install the fashion pieces at the stern

With the Christmas holiday past, I'm back planking the hull. The shape is really weird, and is requiring some very interesting custom planks. At the stern, I'll need another stealer, or a plank that "widens" at the end of it's run to get the stern planked properly. The final strake will be custom fit, and I'm going to try to arrange it so that it's made up of three planks, not just two. The fitting will be easier that way.

Dutchman reacted to TheDutchShipBuilder in Hermione La Fayette by TheDutchShipBuilder - Artesania Latina - second wooden ship built
Hi Everyone,
It's been a while (again). I'm sorry for that, but I started my new study at the univerity of Rotterdam Mainport, so I couldn't do a lot. But unfortunatly I had to stop this study. The reason is personal. But this gave me some time to do some moddeling again.
And I started just where we left off last time.
I wasn't quit saticfied about the result of the 1st planking. So I decided to add a second planking. Besides that I finished the construction of the ship, underdeks as well as upperdeks. And here are finally some pictures again;

Leaving paradise to return to cold Wisconsin. Ready to restart my modeling after a 2 week break. Here's a view from the villa on St. Martin, FWI we rented for the family. It's good to be retired!

Not really sure if there are any "easy" planking ships but it does get easier to do with practice. Water and heat and woods that will bend easy are your friends to be sure. Mostly though it is just a lot of patience and trial fit, soak, heat, bend trial fit and repeat as needed. I know that doesn't really help but it does get better.
In a few weeks I will be starting the planking of my newest build, Le Soleil Royal. When I do I will try to do a better job of taking and posting instructional pictures to better explain my methods than I did before. Keep on trying and it will get there!

I use Zapp a Gap (green) CA. I soak the planks a bit, which speeds up the sticking of the glue. Hold the plank in place a few seconds while pressing lightly and it holds! ( it holds your finger as well if dont take care, mind you). Works perfectly with me.

Wood came in today, so plan on working on boat tomorrow. I am thinking of using combo of AC glue and Wood glue when I plank so I do not have to nail it.

Great! This one is also waiting for me on the shelf! I visited the ship last year in France ( as well as the Hermione). And as soon as I have finished the Lady Nelson I will take on this one. So it's nice to have at least 2 other examples to learn from. Have fun and enjoy!

Some more progress on the 2nd planking. The bow is looking a bit rough.

Glued the first of the 2nd layer of planking. Also glued the transom on. It needs to have a keel piece added to the stern. Do I then plank the veneer on either sides of that keel piece?

Hi
I started this kit approximately 11 years ago. It has traveled half away across the eastern side of Australia through various moves. Last time I looked at it was roughly 5 years ago. Pulled it out and decided to try and finish it. Its haunted by the ghosts of mistakes past. These are photos of where I left it.

I installed the two custom fitted strakes at the stern to eliminate the "tail" that stuck up there. It turned out OK, and restores a better sheer line to the aft planking.
