Not sure how you do it, Anton. It takes me a whole day to make one of those parts. You do it faster and more accurately than I could ever dream of doing!

Maybe I need more tools to compensate!

Main saloon skylights now made up. These are purely a skylight and we leave these open about 90% of the time to allow airflow. There is a mesh grate which is to stop people falling through at deck level which I've yet to make. These skylights are only closed while alongside at night, during heavy weather and wearing or tacking as they impede access to the fore braces when open.

I have my little vise mounted on a 'portable workbench' and use it often with various hand tools.

I built foam rubber cradles out of swim noodles with a broom handle it the center hole to cradle the hull in all its crazy angles during planking. There's a picture of them on my build log. I use three of them, but remove the center  one when I want a perfectly upright model. I use all three when I want it upside down laying on her deck. Someone thought they looked like rolling pins from my wife's kitchen. They gave me ( and continue to give me) a soft, well supported system no matter what angle I'm working on. When I start the topside and rigging, I'll make something more sturdy.

flying_dutchman2 reacted to Brenticus in Golden Hind as Kalmar Nyckel? (Kitbashing)
@ Nazgul:  Thanks for the recommendation!  The Berlin does seem strikingly similar to my (less discerning) eye- especially below the waterline (which seems to be the difficult part to find).  I'm not so much afraid of wooden kits in general (in fact, I am dying to do one), so much as I don't think my skills are at a place where I could pull off such a complicated build before getting more experience.  I'll probably do a nice Rattlesnake or maybe a simple brig first, and then move onto the Berlin, as it really does seem very similar (aside from the stern, but that's just aesthetic).  I'm very sure indeed that you are right about it being easier to modify.  You make a good point about the carvings and the paint...the amount of carvings makes more sense on something lie the Vasa or the Wappen Von Hamburg (not Dutch, but a pretty prestigious warship, from what I gather).

@ Marcus: Thanks for the link!  There was some really interesting info in that thread, and I am looking forward to reading the thread on the Vasa forum that was linked within there.  One of the guys said his dissertation was on Dutch ships, I believe (just skimmed it).  That should be an interesting read!

Take a look at this thread
    http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/9996-ships-of-the-late-16th-century/

I have many similar plans of that era. Abel Tasman's ships. Dutch 17th century merchant ships.

    You're welcome Brenticus.

As for the feasibility ...it's wood. Anything is feasible. Bear in mind that the Golden Hind has a much higher forecastle, quarterdeck, and poop. The angle of the transom is much steeper in the Hind. All this will be laser cut into the bulkheads if you buy a kit. You can, of course, modify the bulkheads or cut your own, but then you are venturing into scratch territory. And don't forget that you have to come up with the carvings yourself, because (probably) no kit in existence will have carvings that will match the Kalmar Nyckel.

    This is what I suggest:

    - send a PM to member rshousha. He is an MSW sponsor, and he is able to render drawings in CAD and laser cut the bulkheads for you.
    - buy the planks from Crown Timberyard, and the fittings from Amati, RB Model, Artesania (etc) - take your pick.

To be honest I don't think there is enough information in those plans to make a model. It might pay to write to the owners of Kalmar Nyckel, explain your situation, and ask for better plans.

    My fellow model shipwrights,

I want to build a model of the Kalmar Nyckel (http://www.kalmarnyckel.org/), but apparently none exists.  I lack the skill to build a wooden one from scratch.  However, since I am going to crew her this year, I am absolutely champing at the bit to have a model of her.

The Kalmar Nyckel (a pinnace) looks a lot like a galleon and is of that era, so I thought maybe a galleon could be modified to look like her.  The Revell Spanish Galleon was out, since its aftercastle is too high and the stern itself has two balconies.

The Golden Hind, however, looks pretty close.  The plans of both are attached for comparison (My thanks to KeithW for the Kalmar Nyckel plans).

The Kalmar Nyckel has a shallower draught, especially toward the stern.  The wales up above the weather deck are entirely different, and the gratings are in different locations.  The quarterdeck/poop (whatever you call those on a older vessel like this) is in a bit of a different location.  The balcony on the stern is different, as well.

It seems to me that all of this (except the draught, might have to live with that, I don't know) could be overcome with some sanding, cutting, and kitbashing.

TL;DR: Can I use kitbashing, sanding, and cutting to make the Golden Hind into a presentable (though certainly not perfect) approximation of the Kalmar Nyckel?

What do you folks think?  Is this feasible?  Do you all know of another kit that would work better?

flying_dutchman2 reacted to mtaylor in Can i live without a BYRNES TABLE SAW
    Don,

First.. if the Micro-Mark are Dremel brand, don't.   Get the size of the blade and look at Thurston or find a Dremel on the one of the online markets.   I have an MM table saw and their blades just don't last so I've been using Thurston and the Thurston's are actually cheaper.

As for the tooth count...  etc.   The 24 tooth probably has offset teeth.  This allow fast ripping of thick wood without clogging the teeth.  The slitting blade has the teeth all in a line.  Works fine for wood that's not very thick.  Check this page at Hobbymill.  There's a great page on blade selection:  http://www.hobbymillusa.com/byrnes-saw-operation.php   I've found that changing the blades for the appropriate tooth count really does make a difference.

We are nearly at the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania.  I would like to recommend Dead Wake by Erik Larson which goes into the background of many of the passengers and crew of the Lusitania under the command of Captain William Thomas Turner as well as the German submarine U-20 under the command of Kapitanleutnant Walther Schwieger.  She was torpedoed a little after 2 in the afternoon of May 7, 2015 and sank in 18 minutes.

This is a non-fiction work but nearly reads like a novel.  Mr. Larson has done his homework and written a book that is not to be missed.   I could go on for a long time on this book but suffice it to say that it is "must read" for anyone with any interest in maritime history, the history of WWI, or history in general for that matter.

Hartstikke mooi. The weathering is absolutely gorgeous. It looks so real and the details are just amazing. The boat itself looks weird. It is all bow and stern and the mid section and what Jan B. wrote makes a lot of sense. On that same note is the way a Dutch Fluit looks, Skinny top and fat bottom. Small narrow deck because this was how the load was taxed.

I always wondered about the compactness of these boats, now I know, its the consequence of the Scottisch licensing system. You have 10 metre and under and over 10 metre. Absolutely great model by the way, I keep getting back to these pictures.

The next job was the netroll. I started painting and weathering and after this I placed the net on the roll. Voor netting I use bathsponges wich have nice netting if you cut the string holding them together. I also painted and weathered the trawldoors wich are made from aluminium so no rust this time.

The past few days I worked on the crane with powerblock. It's being used for hauling(?) the nets in.

Lately, I have been painting the second figure that will be placed on my ship.  It's Captain Job and he will soon be found on the bridge. I think it's successful and I've at least had fun painting.

    Hi all,

Due to holidays and other cases, the work on the trawler for a while stood still, but that has now changed. Still several issues had to be made on the deck. I'm not sure what to call everything, but it is mainly rolls where the fishing lines come out and where the lines are led back. A railing with control for winch and three hatches and a winch made.
After this I must still make the railing and some small things and then the building is almost finished and it needs to be painted only.

In the pictures I show only the new stuff so you can see what's new.

    The beginning of a winch

    And then you get this

And here the new new dekfittings. I have no pictures of the building but trust me. It was not without any problems to find Proper shapes and sizes

And yes the chains are a bit too thick. For this, I am looking for a smaller one.

Because I want to make a realistic model like it is sailing in to the harbour I wanted to add some figures to the boat. The figure is a 1/24 scale figure but his size match well with the 1/26 scale.
