Here a small in between from my small series about ships at the end of their career. A simple hoeker wreck stranded at the beach. I think Emiel had more work creating this image than I did. Human figures by Artitec.

The ALS has accelerated in the last 2 weeks and my left hand has severely weakened. I can still type, but slower.
I tried to sand a mast today but I just don't have the strength to put it in a vise and then work on it. I have to be practical and realize that my ship modelling days are over 😢 😢 😢 😢 😢 😢 😢.
I will try some other stuff but I think this is it.

Sorry to hear the news.
Well, I hope you enjoy your build, keep us posted, and please don’t roast your poor, lovely fluit!

Cut square and rectangular dowels from walnut on the bandsaw and glued the front of the block on one side and the side of the block on the other side.
They are now ready for drilling using a 1mm diameter bit.

In the summer of 2024, I started working on the blocks. Using TurboCAD, I took the block plan from the book and used the measurements for the scale I am using.
Copied both the front and side of the blocks and filled the page with copies of the individual blocks and are ready for printing.

I did a drawing of the anchors in the scale I needed. They are completely made of wood except for the ring. Two sheet and two best bower anchors.

That's a tough diagnosis, Marcus, and I'm with Patrick on wishing you strength for the challenges to come. But I think I would not be alone in hoping that you would seriously reconsider the 'Viking funeral' plan for your model. Certainly someone in your family would appreciate having it, even if it is not completed? Might even be the kind of project someone would be willing to finish up for your family.

I have got some bad news.
I have been diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) symptoms in April of 2025. This disease is fatal & there is no cure. Some doctors say that you live 2 to 5 years but can also be 7 to 10 years. It all depends on good nutrition and continue to move around as much as possible. ALS is also known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease’ My wife and I think it slowly started in 2023 and then in 2024 I could not open a plastic bottle and I fell here there, I was losing my balance.
I don’t have the “ALS gene”, but I do have all the symptoms. There are many variants and if you don’t have the gene it is difficult to pin point which one it is.
In most cases, ALS patients do not typically experience significantly impaired sensory neural functioning, intellectual reasoning, vision or hearing and eye and bladder muscles.
Presently taking some meds that will slow down degeneration of the motor neurons by 25%. One of the positive signs of this disease is that there is NEVER any pain.
I still have fine motor skills in both of my hands but my right arm is now stronger than my left arm. I know I will not be able to finish my present built, the fluit, the Zeehaen. I have decided to keep on building and will be mostly to exercise my joints in my hands. Once I lose all my muscles in my hands and arms and the ship is not finished, I will give it a “Viking Funeral.”
If you have any questions, just PM me.
Regards,
Marcus

flying_dutchman2 reacted to YankeeD in De Zeven Provinciën 1665 by YankeeD - Scale 1:50 - according to drawings by Mr. O. Blom - First wooden scratch ship build
I have started again as said. As the ship has been finished from 'wood' point of view I started the rigging.
I will not finish the ship in full. I intend to do a sort of 'while laying in harbour for great maintenance".
So no sails, guns out. That means I will rigg only the main rigging.
I have no experience in knotting so it will be learn by doing...
Enjoy the day. Hans.

Once again, like usual, I am late to the party on a fascinating model and blog. Ab, you have made another beautiful model, I've never tried modeling with card personally. Seeing the ketch version of same ship would be really cool to me as those rigs were so rare and unique. My condolences with the many others here about the loss of extended family and your friend.
Druxey, this is great news to hear about your co-writing this book about the Stuart yachts. I have Ab's book about the Dutch cargo yachts of that time and was wondering if there was going to come a civilian/VIP version even if there is scant information available. I have long admired ships such as Mary and the Utretch. So many similarities in deck layouts and some internal features yet so many differences as well, especially length of the hull. An old book I have printed in Dutch about one of the statenjachts being built as a scale model, this one measured 79 ft long (which was recorded as a standard size of many such vessels) whereas the diving expedition to remains of Mary estimate her to be only 52 ft long. Those designs of that era are beautifully made, too bad so much history and information was either destroyed or never recorded. I look forward to this book of yours being published.
