I have a little time, so I will post a couple of pictures. Here are some of a whaleboat being restored and fitted out for the restoration.

this drawing was actually taped to the bulkhead next to the wheel and tiller to show the person restoring it how it is supposed to look.

You're welcome Augie. There will be more to follow, and I will be posting a separate set of pictures of my journey in the Museums and other ships section of the forum soon. Too time consuming right now, but that way other people can view them than just the ones following my log. Just time for a couple of more, then I have to hook up and head to Gettysburg, Pa. today. these were in the Collections and Research building, which is a fascinating place all by itself.

Well Mates, I am finally in cooler weather. I am now in Calvert City, Kentucky. Lot's of rain and things I haven't seen in a while. Hope everyone is well, the ship yard is currently on strike, and might start up again in a week or two. Here's campsite #4. first Texarkana, second Hot Springs, Arkansas, met up with old friend from 9th grade as wsell as Navy buddy, third Missouri, now Kentucky for 4 days. Here's the site:

I wasn't going to work on it today, but couldn't stand it once again, so I installed the bowspirit, planked and stained the anchor deck. Then moved on and installed the windlass. Much still to do on the windlace, but it is now on the ship. Details to come as I progress.
FROM THIS POINT UNTIL PAGE 32 PICTURES ARE MISSING FROM THIS LOG.

Updates have been slow the last few days. The coppering is tedious and I wanted it to look as good as I could do it. It was definitely a learning experience...trial and error emphasis on the error. I do realize that it is one of the most important visual details on the hull so it has to look good. This is not perfect, but I am satisfied with it. I found I had to use Testor's Green glue for Wood & Metal models. I'll include a picture with my next series. By putting this on the hull it prevented the lift caused by finger oil or wood imperfections and down right buggering it up with clumsy fingers which I am notorious for. The glue stopped all of that. So with further adoo, here is the port side, which now leaves the starboard side tomorrow.

Ran the port side keel line first. Will cap it later I think.

I've painted the white trim on the hull s well as painted over the gray on the waterways with a brownish mixture. I think it looks like weathered wood which is the affect I'm looking for.

Hi Jay, I'm not sure what the answer is on that one. the lost treasures are the National Archives, and the Smithsonian. no telling what they don't or won't show us.

Second coat of black looks good now. I'm not sure on my gray waterway, looks more like it should be darker. I'll be mixing paint and trying to darken it down to look more natural.

Here is the rest of them. Next is the yellow ochre for the bulwarks which should look way better than rough primer.

Today, I so far have primed the bulwarks and the paintable (almost) sides of the hull. Now for all you perfect painters, don't panic if it looks crude right now---I'm not finished yet. Also the aft end has some unpainted areas and that will be covered up with the hurricane house and stores & head rooms, along with the box that covers the tiller. I didn't paint those areas because I didn't want to waste the paint. The paint that bled onto the waterway will be a light grey color, so it's not a critical problem.

I finished building the 2 ladders for the anchor deck, made up 4 sheaves for the pinrails, and after much testing, decided to use a Minwax Light Maple stain/varnish satin finish for the deck. I broke down and decided to try it. Here is the first coat which will be steel wooled and recoated probably 3 times or until I am satisfied with the finish. The woods are different texture and color but it is natural, and at least it isn't green anymore. Here is a series of photos with more to follow as I am happy with it.

Today, I got the catheads in, and the mooring chocks, and head chain chocks, and finsihed bracing the platform for the anchor deck. It will be planked later on. On the catheads, if you don't study the plans thoroughly, you can miss the eyebolts for the jib boom shrouds. I photographed it for anyone in the future. The Thumb Cleats are not discribed or shown well in the plans, as well as on the parts list they are identified as Longhorn Cleats for Davits. So I eventually figured out which ones were to be used. None of the Brittainia parts are discribed well, so careful matching to drawings is necessary for identification. It was cool to start using the metal parts and to begin the details.

Starts to get really fun once it starts to look like a ship instead of a bunch of crude wood.
