  1. Just to let you know I have decided to go forwards with surgery to remove what they can of the metastasis on my brain

This may happen quite quickly so I may disappear for a while soon but I hope to be able to let you know

My thing now is to get my mind off things so I hope working on the models will help

I will do more work on the Will tomorrow

It is actually looking very close now to starting the rigging and the masts and I do hope for a few pointers here If I can get them as the instructions are non existent

  2. Hi there

Was rushed into hospital Sunday night with a severe speech impediment

I am not going to run to deep into it here other than to say that an MRI scan found a lesion on my brain

I have had a Caring bridge web going giving the full story of my recent cancer problems

If you wish to visit the site and read the story and the things other people have also left as it were, could you please message me personally as I don't want everyone on there who just want a visit for the hell of it, I want people who WANT to read as it does go a little deep

Obviously I am not sure what the immediate future may hold, it could now involve quite quick surgery I may just disappear for a bit

Anyway back to the model and questions

So Sjors do you prefer the lighter Amati thread over the slightly darker Mantua hemp thread???

    The sizes are certainly better

Are you that way inclined as well Kip???

Also Kip, the Billings thread is IMO a very poor thread that frays very quickly

Now Kip, regarding those leeboard winches

You are saying the drums are fitted inboard, opposite to how Billings show

I also had a problem with the cog as to which side it goes as in two different plans it was shown different ways, but that has been done now

So any help in any way will be very well received

    Thanks everyone

  3. Did a few more hours on the Will

First things were two bits of wood that go the full width of the ship just off the deck

I am presuming they hold rigging as one has some eye bolts and a hook, the other just a hook post-3712-0-44689200-1391357566_thumb.jpgpost-3712-0-36661900-1391357560_thumb.jpg

They look like prime objects for tripping over  :o

Also somewhere in the parts list the name 'Horse' was mentioned

Does anyone know if that is what they are called ???

Then I made a couple of pulley systems

Looking at the plans these control the dropkeels

    post-3712-0-51943700-1391357570_thumb.jpg

They took most of the time today

Tomorrow we have friends up for the day then Tuesday my day club

I MAY get some time Wednesday, if not it will be Thursday  :dancetl6:

Don't forget to get back me about the rigging  :piratebo5:

  4. Ok I am here to get some ideas from you all

Firstly my main supplier is Cornwall Model Boats

They have a fair supply of rigging thread, but are a bit limited on colour

First regarding sizes, I was thinking of 0.1 for the ratlines and 0.25 for the rigging

Looking at the scale of 1:67 is that good or do I need a little thicker ?????

    Next the colours

    post-3712-0-02031700-1391349318.jpgpost-3712-0-45296600-1391349318.jpgpost-3712-0-81980100-1391349318.jpg

They seem to be limited in the smaller sizes to hemp and black

    I couldn't find a brown

So what are your thoughts on this, both the size and colour

As to colour I err towards the hemp

As to size I just don't know which would be the correct sizes for the scale and there I would like a bit of help

I look forward to hearing from you  :dancetl6:

Just to help you a bit, that white Billings stuff appears to about 0.5 but it is very loose and fluffy

  5. Once again I spent half a day on the Will for little seeming to get done

I got the wheelhouse, wheel and steering gear  ;) fitted

Should have retaken the first photo as it is crap

    post-3712-0-23126400-1391277257_thumb.jpgpost-3712-0-06108100-1391277263_thumb.jpg

Not sure the angles are quite right

    I will sleep on it

I also, for some reason, started the lifeboat davits and was a bit worried about the thread size

    post-3712-0-68795800-1391277367_thumb.jpg

To me it looks far to thick especially with that 3mm block

    And white??????

    Really????????????????????????????

    Advice please

I have lots to do and I will try and get a few hours in tomorrow as next week looks quite busy  :dancetl6:

    Follow up on this

This is a block with the .15mm thread I have with the Endeavour also showing the lifeboat

    post-3712-0-77178800-1391278280_thumb.jpg

    So??

    What do think

    What size and colour thread???????????

  6. Well I have had my first major misreading of the instructions

    It's the wheelhouse

    post-3712-0-19833100-1391265714_thumb.jpg

How it looks now is how if should be, it just needs cleaning up and painting

I had misread the arrows and the bit at the bottom with the portholes and shelf did not belong at the bottomof the wheelhouse where I had it

I had presumed that it fitted into those sort of slots at the bottom of the wheelhouse

However had I had my thinking head on I would have realised that the rudder wires had to go somewhere  :(

Anyway all sorted now and I am in the process of putting together the other pulleys and gears

I don't know where to put them, but hopefully.............................

  7. Thanks for all your comments

Macbride, I have to say that I would not consider the Will a beginners boat as the instructions do seem to assume that you have quite a bit of foreknowledge of boat building

The very first ship I built, The Sergal Racehorse, was a really good model to start on as the instructions were very good

Anyway I am still not 100% but I thought I would try and do a bit to take my mind off things

I did glaze all the windows, fitted the edges and then used a little stain on them

I also placed the bits in place for the photo

    post-3712-0-99344800-1391195851_thumb.jpg

I am not sure when to stick everything down as there are lots of bit and bobs, gears and pulleys, to be fitted still

Problem is I am very close to the end of the instructions and they simply say to assemble and mount stuff

I am hoping I can sort everything out from the drawings and the photos I have off the net

I will try and get some work done over the weekend  :dancetl6:

  8. Thanks a lot all  :)

    Done another few hours work

    post-3712-0-99217600-1390758937_thumb.jpg

I have made another hatch/roof thingummy

That is the last large item for the deck though there are quite a few gears and rigging bits to go on

I have also given most things their final coat of paint and some stain where I think it should be dark natural

I am at my club tomorrow so not a lot will get done, but my next job is 'glazing' all the windows and fitting window frames

Then I need to start fitting things followed by making the rest of the pulleys etc using purely drawing as there are little to no instructions  :dancetl6:

  9. Been hard at work again today although it don't look as if I have done much

    post-3712-0-90826700-1390674808_thumb.jpg

I have given the big bit on the deck its first coat of green

Also a few other bits have a coat of green on them though they look as if they will need several coats

I have built something with portholes and a couple of other brass thingummybobs sticking out of it

I painted the gears etc of the bit that goes at the front, grey

And I have painted the top of the wheelhouse white, fitted a shelf at the back and fitted window frames

    Well that's it

Tomorrow I have another bit to build to go on the deck and no doubt I will do some more painting

It's all coming together slowly  :dancetl6:

  10. Managed to get a bit more done today

Put the ribs on the dropkeels and a coat of paint

I also roughly put together the wheelhouse

    post-3712-0-60211800-1390590737_thumb.jpg

The wheelhouse is very rough with wet glue and will need cleaning and scraping but it's made a start

The dropkeels on the instructions show eight ribs running straight vertically

However all the photos show three ribs running at quite an angle so that's what we got  :P

    More to do tomorrow  :dancetl6:

  11. Ok made a start today

I have painted the sides of the main roof/hatch and also added an opening that looks like a sliding hatch as that is obvious on several photos

    post-3712-0-05698000-1390573648_thumb.jpg

I am going to paint the top green and I will try to leave the hatch and window edges natural as they seem to be on the photos I have seen

Be alright do you think  :dancetl6:

  12. Thanks again all

    No propeller Kip

Hi Joe. Billing are notorious for a lack of instruction. A lot of work has to be done using the full size plans

One thing I would advise you to do is replace the rubbish deadeyes and blocks. They really aren't up to it

Cornwall model boats do a great range

I haven't been on the models for a couple of days. Yesterday a busy day at my club and today a great days fishing

I should get a few hours on it tomorrow and over the weekend

    Watch this space

  13. Thanks all

Managed not much time at all on the boat

    post-3712-0-96407500-1390334294_thumb.jpg

I made and put in the window frames on what I think is a roof rather than the hatch

They will need cleaning up and then painting inside before the perspex is fitted

And I put together a couple of the plastic thingummygigs

They look bloody awful but hopefully with a bit of work and some judicious painting...............

    Better news from the hospital

We saw my oncology nurse and she said that the new drug they will put me on if the course of chemo does nothing has had some very good results

Not just that, they have been long term remissions, so at least I have something to look forward to

Ok it may not work for me but the chances are good

    Well pleased

  14. I did manage to get a bit done after my club

I don't like to work too late as the Admiral and I like watching a bit of TV together

Anyway I managed to almost finish the largest piece of deck furniture  :)

    post-3712-0-73344400-1390244888_thumb.jpg

I managed to do all the edges

All it requires is a couple of roof windows

I will need to paint it some before doing those though

I am working hard now  :dancetl6:

  15. Well today I seemed to work for ages getting very little done  :(

    post-3712-0-36985300-1390154948_thumb.jpg

I got one of the vents made

Something I am not sure about that's curved and got bits stuck on it

Another bit I haven't got a clue about that attaches to a gear at the bow

And I fixed the rudder on

    Nothing got painted

It seemed to go on forever and nothing was getting done

Tomorrow I am at my club most of the day but may have a couple of hours to start more of the deck furniture

    We shall see

  16. Thanks all

I am almost 100% that it holds the wheel

Anyway I have done a bit

Here is the painted rudder and the pulley that holds the dropkeel up

    post-3712-0-92072700-1390061239_thumb.jpg

And here is a pulley/cog system that sits at the front

    post-3712-0-85626800-1390061291_thumb.jpg

I have painted the main sides with the red that is on the hull

I am now debating whether to paint the pulleys etc grey or black

As far as I can see they seem to be painted in the colour of the upper hull which would be grey

    We shall see

  17. Rather a senior moment posting Will stuff on the Endeavour log

A will repeat what I posted over there though

I have had bad news from my oncology doctor

It may make my work very sporadic in the future, we are not sure

While I can though I will put as many hours as I can into my builds

I will be concentrating on the Will as I have said earlier

    I have a slight problem

I cannot work out what and where a part goes

The part is the one on right shown as being on the centre line towards the back

    post-3712-0-91767500-1390054366_thumb.jpg

I have a couple of good photos of the stern deck of the model but I cannot see that it might be

    post-3712-0-73542800-1390054513_thumb.jpgpost-3712-0-95382400-1390054514_thumb.jpg

    I really haven't got a clue

There is so little information in the instructions and I cannot make it out on the plan

    Any idea

I may carry on and see if I can work out where it fits in

I am about to start the construction of the deck parts and finish painting the rudder

    HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Looking again, could it hold the wheel????????????????????????????????
