    Build log part 39

view on aft deckhousing platform (boatstation and operating area Access to winches)

down below, between the cargo derricks hatch #4

    view looking Forward on highdeck

catwalk stanchions fitted to brass angle bars, turned to the outside, thus leaving space for 3 Walking Planks in the middle

small Access ladder to compas platform in front of the insulated Galley exhaust

view over aft welldeck, shrouds mounted, but no ratlines yet. The lifesaver rings I found in correct scale at Billing Boats

for those who were asking about the pig Kennels for live pork, here they are...

running rigging ropes coiled preliminary on bits of Wood, for attaching to the sails later on

view on port Forward welldeck and boat station

quite a lot of ropes, stays and running rigging ropes and running rigging for six Yards and sails per mainmast

So let me share some of my first impressions of this kit. First off have I said this boat is a monster? She is very big! I am looking forward to a lot of nice detail.

The pictures below are the result of about 90 min of tinkering. All of the parts fit together vary nicely with almost no sanding. You will note that the laser burn marks are still evident. What you see in these pictures is also almost completely without glue. Everything is snug and tight. It to some force to get it together, but I am ready for sanding and fairing.

The plans are excellent. The instruction are good. They could be a bit more detailed, but they come in several pamphlets. One for each language. I forgot to mention that each bundle of planking is labeled! With dimensions and what it is to be used for. I have not seen this on any other model. The labels are in 4 languages.

PS you will note the mat it is laying on is 33 inches wide! This is a whale of a model. Not sure what the admiral will say when I try to display it in the living room.

The Sailor reacted to Beef Wellington in HMS Snake by Beef Wellington - FINISHED - Caldercraft - Scale 1: 64 - First wooden ship build
Well, its been a little longer than I had I thought.  I got into a bit of a funk with a couple of aspects of the rigging and felt myself forcing things - so decided to take a bit of a break.  I think I got lucky with my first mouse, replicating it proved to be rather challenging but decided to make them all in one go so they are as consistent as can be (why don't any manufacturers make mice?).

Not much to report, but I am back in the shipyard at least...I do still want to try and capture each step in order for future reference, so apologize if this is less than thrilling.

Maintop with main and preventer stays in place...

Main and preventer stays attached to their respective hearts.  Did not serve around the stays where they rub against the fore-mast as would have been done.  I didn't  use the supplied 1.25mm line as supplied as it seemed a little too thick and out of scal, instead going with some 'officially' 1.3mm Caldercraft line which in reality was slightly thinner than the supplied 1.25mm stuff.  This proved to be a 'fuzzy'  nightmare but once in place I brushed with dilute PVA and they seem to have been banished.

The lashing of the hearts was done with  fake splice to the lower heart (although believe this maybe should have been to the upper heart) and then seizing the other end to the lashing.  The hearts have circular holes, I'd recommend flattening off the lower side so the lashing sits better, as it is, I found this quite tricky to look right.

I should have trimmed the topgallant platform a bit more neatly, or should not have brought this pic..

here the roller in the mast can be seen

the diate coke just came Handy...

I find working in metal Comes easier than with Wood for mast rigging

again one of those Little scetches of mine that accompany through the build, and where I bring my thoughts to paper before the semi metal is cut.., there remains enough for the bin anyhow
I think I should post a couple of samples for These scetches for those who are interested in these

Looks like I must have a brass-mine somewhere

raw Yard with its rack is attached to the mast, that Little string is only a preliminary hold

most of the mainmast-work can be done tripple wise

These are the slide shoes for mounting the yardracks to (enabling 3D movement of the Yards)

all soldering is done with the gastourch here in order to have sufficient heat

These eyelets have to be soldered ver thorrowly, due to the tensile stresses of the stays

all elevations and distances in hight have to be crosschecked several times in order to get the sails later rigged in the appropriate hoisted and / lowered position

    Build log part 20

here starts some of the work on masts, Yards, bow sprit, bumpkins, made of brass, etc...
all These parts of the actual Pamir were hollow steel tubes made from round bent and riveted steel plates

starting with the fourth (mizzen) mast

the third main mast (tapering by shafting different diam. tubes), Topgallant platform

    lower mars top platform

the oval breakthrough in the mast, below the topgallant platform takes the rollerwheel for the Yard hoist chain

the vertical moveable yardracks are later mounted to These slide shoe devices (movable Yards)

there are 3 vertical moveable Yards on each mainmast, the other three are only swivable, fixed to horizontal and tiltable movement

Basic fastening anchoring for the lower top shrouds. Started to attach the hundreds of eyelets by soldering to their required positions

    Navigation light Towers mounted

the rear Davits (front boat Davit) are mounted to the highdeck bulkhead and go through the welldeck pinrack

    looking foreward from above view

here come the self braking wormgear winches for Yard hoisting and lowering

six of those wormgear required, here handwheels mounted, the wormshaft made from a screw with the same pitch as the toothwheel has. Gear reduction 40:1

    again the three Jarvis winches

    and the Motor winches

I shall probably post the work beginning with the masts and Yards next....

am satisfied with the result so far

making thoughts about prop outcut and rudder blade Arrangement, corresponding to one of the various changes after 1951
For manouvering in Harbor Areas, in South American ond other bay Locations, shallow Waters, and in lack of wind, a 1000 PSi Motor had been built in, as well as a 2,5 m dia 2-blade Propeller. The other Major changes after 1951 I shall Point out later on

the coming planking will be so much easier if the stringers can be used as Counterparts to fasten the clamps. These stringers also give enormous strength to the planking itsself

    all well under way now

here Comes the first plank (pine as Long as the hull 2 x 10 mm)for single layer planking.
I cut These Planks myself out of fine structure boards from the crafters. This hull shall also be plated later, so the 2mm thick planking provides sufficient thickness for smoothing down the outer surface well enough for the plating

thats partiall enough for the starboard side, pull up the port side planking now....

    same Status from bow view

both sides planking is heading for the keel

Little propshaft mounted and 2-blade Propeller fixed (M3 thread)

this is one of the three foreseen standbolts, because this weakens the keel there have been wooden reinforcement claddings fixed to it from both sides within the hull

working out and drawing the individual Frames in order to suit this build

each Frame gets its own 1:1 drawing on paper

rough cut out of the paper and fix on 4 or 5 mm thick plywood

an obligatory base plate is set up to Keep all in alignment and to get (and keep) the keelline straight during the further build

cut out Frames in preliminary set up, to see if all Frames are straking well
cross check, yes it Looks like Pamirs lines of the early hull

the model is being built keelside up, the Frames complete cut out, and the notches for the stringers done

    all looks well so far

due to the fix on the baseplate all frames bear Surplus height, to bring (only interim, will be cut to suit later on)to the same level

like a strong man Needs a strong Backbone, I have arranged for a "spine" 20 x 20 mm square beam to reinforce the hull for taking on the induced tensile stresses of all the stay and shrouds spanning, working on the hull later on. I never regretted to do this...

well under way now, the stringers as well as the ships lines clearly to be seen now
