    Hello Bob,

If you don't mind, I would like to follow along to watch and learn.
I have the schooner Hannah, also from the Lumberyard, waiting patiently on the shelve.

Good luck with your build and have fun.

Folks, a couple of you have recently changed your usernames, which is fine. BUT, if you do change your username, please help us out by editing the titles of all your build logs (you can do this in the first post of each log), so that your logs will conform to the usual naming conventions that help improve the functionality of our search feature.

    Thank you!

    Hi Adam,

Welcome to MSW.  You've received some pretty good advise on starting out.  I'll just echo that "start small" and go from there.  The first kit I bought was the Billing's Wasa.  The first kit I built was a smallish AL Scottish Maid, though.

Welcome back to MSW! Hopefully this time around you will be able to fully enjoy the hobby. Best of luck to you on your build of the Bounty. I would recommend checking some of the great build logs of her on here for some ideas and guidance and then start up your own log so we can follow along and be there when you need help. Again, I wish you good luck and I look forward to seeing your build!

Anja got a reaction from RdK in Nuestra Señora del Pilar by Anja & Sjors - FINISHED - OcCre - Scale 1:46
    all,

My Halve Maen build was already on hold, but during our move to a new house in November 2015, she got lost because one of our friends put her box on the pavement instead of in our car.

After that the enthusiasm to build was completely gone. I spent last year enjoying my other hobbies.

But, as a Dutch saying goes: 'Blood is thicker than water' and the urge to build another ship came back.

So, May I present to you the Spanish Galleon Nuestra Señora del Pilar De Zaragoza (Our lady of the pillar of Zaragoza), a Spanish Treasure Galleon.

    Measurements
    Length: 1110 mm
    Height: 970 mm
    Width: 520 mm

    History
During the 17th and 18th centuries Spanish galleons served the Spanish crown as merchantmen and warships. Many of them sailed between Acapulco and Manila, transporting South American silver to the Philippines and exotic goods from Asia to Mexico, from where the treasures were sent back to Spain.

Commisioned in 1731 and launched in 1733, Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza (Our Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza) was one of these Manila Galleons built of the finest Philippine wood, she was 112 feet on deck and displaced 1,000 tons. A 4th rate of the Cavogonda class, she was fitted with 50 cannon, two stern chasers and six swivel guns. She carried a crew of 385 men.

For twenty years she sailed the route from Mexico to Manila and in 1750 underwent a complete refit in the Port of Cavite. In 1750, on her last voyage, she set sail from Manila bound for Acapulco. Despite being overloaded, and contrary to the opinion of both pilots and Master, her Captain insisted on weighing anchor at the beginning of September. En route for the Mariana Islands, in the Pacific, they began to have difficulties after sailing into a heavy storm, and she sank taking all of her crew down with her.

    Hello all.
As some of you already know, my mom passed away at the beginning of this month, so things have been hectic to say the least. The legal stuff, her will and testament, what are we going to do with her house and all the stuff in it, her jewelry, etc. For obvious reasons my mood has been less that cheerful. BUT, life has to go on and I finally managed to finish 12 upper deck cannons as you will see.
I have to admit that I was hesitant about getting in the trouble of making those rope coils, but now I am SOOO glad I did!!!
I used a piece of masking tape to roll the coils over it. I used a very strong glue tape so I had a really hard time taking them off the tape. If you are copying this method, I'd suggest you use a less tacky tape like Scotch tape or something similar.

"Bath" the coils generously with diluted white glue. I did two coats for greater strength. The surface you are going to let to be seen is the one underneath.
Also remember to coil half of them clockwise and the other half counter-clockwise.

Here they are. 12 upper deck cannons rigged and with their complements (coils and cannonball racks) in place.

Welcome to the hobby from southern California. In picking your model pick one that you really like. If you don't  love the model you won't stick with it when the going gets rough.

And another welcome from me Adam.
You have come to the best model ship forum around. Once you have a chosen model you will get plenty of help.
Choosing the right kit can be daunting. I personally find the smaller scale beginner level kits a bit too complex. The intermediate kits are better value in my book. I find the bigger the scale the more easy the pieces are to handle. That said I do have a smaller kit and they can give you a good challenge.  hope you find what you want soon and look forward to you starting a build log,
I use Cornwall Model Boats for all my modelling needs. here is a link to give you an idea http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/mantua_models.html. Not sure how long it takes for them to ship to the sates but they are very fast with their deliveries. They seem to be popular with a lot of modellers.

The Model Shipways armed pinnace is a beginner-level kit that has been successfully built but a goodly number of members here. Naval cutters are also good first projects; check out Caldercraft's Sherbourne or Victory Models' Lady Nelson. Caldercraft also offers a number of other small vessels that might appeal to you. There has been a spate of great new kits put out by a number of less well-known manufacturers (Dusek comes to mind) - take plenty of time to browse through the build logs and check updates in the Traders & Dealers section.

Welcome to MSW Adam! Good to have you with us. Anja gave you a great link for the tools and ideas for starting kits. Only things I would add is first with tools, start simple. Buy what you need as you need it and the blow to the wallet won't be as painful. As for ships to start with, stay simple for the first one. Even if it looks like it may be too easy, (solid hull for example) there are going to be challenges that you have not experienced before. Bending wood for planking, shaping the hull, having to build almost all the parts out of rough lumber and of course the rigging are things that most people have not had to do or only at a minimum coming from the plastic side. I speak from experience! In fact, my first wooden ship was the Rattlesnake. I had built plastic ships before but I quickly found out I was not fully prepared for wood ships and should have started smaller.

The other thing I tell everyone is to find a ship that speaks to you and peaks your interest. Read up a little on different ships that you find kits for and see if one has a history that catches your attention. Sometimes if the ship has a story that you find fascinating it can help motivate you to build her better and push through those tougher spots. No matter what ship you decide upon we will be here ready and willing to give advice, guidance or just friendly support.

Good luck to you and I look forward to seeing what you decide on!
