  1. I first started the repair of the false keel which went well. I used where the keel was punched out as a template and made a pattern which I glued to a piece of basswood. I then trimmed it on the disc sander and glued it to the broken part .
  2. This was an abandoned kit for sale on EBay. It appears to have been abandoned after a planking attempt. As you can see from the pictures it has broken and missing parts. After a very low offer it was accepted. The kit arrived 2 days ago. After cataloging the contents it appears to have a broken false keel with a section missing. Most other parts are with the kit. The attempted planking will require some filling. The deck planking was done well but the color and vanish is atrocious. Any suggestions on correcting it short of sanding it down 1/32” and replanking it will be highly appreciated. Since numerous Bluenose histories are on MSW I will only post the limited history that’s is on the front of the box.
  3. Welcome and enjoy!! I agree 100%. When I am building a kit time gets distorted and an hour goes by in what seems like a few minutes. The downside is that it is a great way to shorten your life. Best Rick (RVB)
  4. Great build. The history of the smack was not only informative but also very impressive. Will fallow the build closely. Best Rick (RVB)
  5. Welcome and enjoy Best RVB

  7. I love following your build. I have the same kit sitting on my work bench. I am going to start it after I finish up my patriotic Chesapeake Bay Crabbing Skiff. Your build is coming along great.
  8. Welcome I joined back in July and have enjoyed every minute that I am on this forum and I am sure you will too and you will find the builds very helpful!
  9. I’m all in on that. Mine had dark blue stripes and a compass mounted in front of the centerboard. I loved that boat and have many fond memories of her.
  10. Nice to meet another 470 lover! Sure do miss those days. Mine was a light blue Vanguard!
  11. Hi Mark I got interested in sailing when I attended the Univ of Maryland dental school in Baltimore. After graduating I used to race an Olympic 470 #984. As I aged in life I sailed and owned a Hunter and later a Catalina. I miss sailing. By the way look at MeCray. His other prints are just as beautiful and impressive. Too bad he passed in 2017. Sincerely, RVB ( RICK)
  12. IMG_2743.mov IMG_2743.mov Hi Mark I noticed in your log introduction you mentioned Endeavour’s Americas Cup Race against Rainbow ( cup defender ). One of my addictions is collecting Nautical Art especially Americas Cup. Have you ever seen prints by John MeCray. He is a world famous Americas Cup artist. His paintings bring life to the subject. If you get a chance you might want to look him up and his paintings. His studio was in Jamestown Rhode Island. I met him in the 70’s when he had just finished painting Rainbow .That’s when I started collecting his art. As I mentioned look him up and enjoy! Here’s his artist proof.
  13. Absolutely beautiful and impressive!! Anxious to follow your next build . Best RVB
  14. Glad to see you on the forum. I guess I am now committed to building the “WHITEHALL 14 ‘ “ before I start Model Shipways USN Picket Boat #1. It’s going to be fun! Love DAD
  15. Almost ready to go crabbing all I need now is the mast sails tiller center board and rudder.
  16. Well I finally finished and temporarily mounted the paddle. As always, Best and happy modeling! RVB
  17. I wanted to weather the trap to have the appearance of a millennium under the sea. To achieve the effect I wanted I painted the dry trap with Tamiya Buff color #XF-57. After I applied the paint I let it set for 5 minutes but not to dry. Then I lightly sanded it with 120 grit sandpaper. I was very happy with the results . I then turned my attention to finish the crab float which I attached to the trap.
  18. Today I finished and weathered the crab trap. I initially painted it dark brown and set it aside for a day to dry while I worked on the paddle and the trap float. The dark brown was was wood grain by Vallejo #70828.
