Over the last couple of weeks I've been working on the remaining cannon and quarterdeck fittings.  Then I fitted and planked the poop deck.  No real drama and I'm very happy that I don't have anymore cannon to rig.  Now I'll be finishing the poop fittings (flag lockers etc) and then to the quarter galleries and the stern which I imagine will be quite a challenge.

    Here are the pictures:

    Second Planking, Waterline & Paint

So ahead with the Second Plank, I had decided that the planks above the whale were going to be in plain wood - with all the work we do with planking I wanted some showing, and as this wood should be Yellow Ochre, I decided that a pale wood varnished would be nice. The planking went ahead with few problems, except I followed the instructions and forgot some of the advice on this site. JoTika/Caldercraft state that the wood should be soaked to aid in bending, and then glued damp to the hull with CA, this is all well and good but their supplied walnut SHRINKS after soaking leaving gaps - admitedly this is only my second effort at planking and chamfering could be some of the cause, but definitely not all.

But overall, as this whole area would be painted & filler could therefore be used, not a total shambles, and so a strip of plasticard was added at the waterline to mark the edge of the plating as per Blue Ensigns build, and the help topic on plating.......

along with the mentioned filler, which also helped where my initial fairing of the bulkheads was not upto scratch (must try harder, as my next build choices all have large unpainted/unplated areas)

Then it was an easy task to mask and spray the whole thing in Satin black:

Three things I have come to understand is that whether the instructions are good - as per Pickle - or scarce - as per Sherbourne - it is a good idea to dilute them with a good pinch of MSW advice!

You can not spend too much time in preparing the bulkheads etc ! - though you can obviously oversand! Soak and pre-shape planks, then allow to dry thoroughly before fitting! Think,,,,,,,, Think,,,,,,, then do!

    Handrails were finished.
I don't like the windows from the kit and made them from plastic of my credit cards. The glass made from the back (bright black) of CD cover, then painted with gold metalic spray, became old with diluted black paint and clear varnished...

I started planking the aft deck. I planked it parallel to the bulwarks. I wasn't quite sure how to do this, and couldn't find very much information or pictures on planking this way. So I hope this is close to right. The good news is most of it in the center will be covered with deck features.

    Hi Guys,

As promised a quick update on progress so-far.

Quarter galleries are finished apart from a little bit of rubbing down, I didnt quite get the angles right so I've had to use a bit of filler but once she's rubbed down and painted up she will be good. Frames are still to go on after painting.

Roundhouse bulkhead completed and painted but I dont want to fit it just yet.

Started on the second planking, at least I have 1 plank at the stem on each side, not much but it's a start, I decided to go with the scale planks in the end. I know that there should be at least 3 planks between butt joints but I'm working on 2,  I'm working on a plank length of 119mm and to get a 3 butt planking pattern I will have to cut 30mm planks at the stem and stern, that doesnt seem long enough to me, it's not too late to change so perhaps you could let me know what you think.

    Some Pics

    First gallery in place

    Part two fitted

I'm glad I've still got some filler

One complete roundhouse and the first 2 planks dry fitted

    Both quarter galleries

    Port gallery

Floors were painted in a force 8 gale

So there we are again, right up to date.

Well nothing a little filler and sanding cant take care of. After I did this and despite its flaws, I can't tell you the overwhelming sense of pride I felt in my Lady Nelson. I find myself staring at her all the time!

    More time to do something.
The varnish is on the Mirage.
It is still wet but I want to show the pictures to you.
Maybe there is coming an other layer of varnish.
But first I want to see how it looks when it is dry.
