Is that yours or Chuck’s? Looks like yours, now we need one from Chuck to compare? Your trapezoid on top looks just a hair too “pointy” but I think it is fine.... it’s one of those things you can obsess about now and at the end of the build it wil just blend in with all the cool things your eye is drawn to......

It’s hard to tell Matthias, it does look like the angle on the plan, but I don’t think Chuck ever shows them from the same perspective angle that you have, it does look like you maybe took too much meat off the “thickness” of the beveled tops.... do you have a photo you are referring to? Or take a shot from the same angle as his and then compare? Or Chuck - take a overhead shot?

I asked him that clear back during Syren and Confederacy - I think he must be OCD about hand washing😀 I really think the key is just being meticulous and deliberate with every aspect of the build and yes, keeping everything clean.... work area, model, tools.... and your hands!

Try flipping the deck pieces over - may fit better, may be the same..... if the bulkheads are glued to the lower deck then I would open the slots in the deck till it fits and reshape center openings- after you plank it the effects of 1-2 mm should be minimal, you would probably incur greater consequences trying to fix it.....

I think he’s asking if that counter piece should be proud of the gunport ply pieces? It should not be, the planking should end at the ply pieces so that counter piece should be inside or at least flush with the bulwark pieces. But it needs also to be curved like Spy and VulcanB said....Unless I read you wrong then belay my last..... 🙂

Why do you move the fence on a Byrnes saw? I must be cutting my strips the wrong way, I mill my billet to the desired plank width and rip strips off the end at the thickness I need - move the billet not the fence?

Chris, I am a bit confused - I thought the Arethusa was the third model -so much for the excitement....  🤯. I was wondering how that brigantine?? looking prototype was going to morph into arethusa, I thought you were just using that to introduce the rabbet method.......I guess I’ll just chill out and wait to see what gets released before I get too worked up 😀.  Unless your Bellona enters the lineup!!! 

Chris, while you wait on Speedy, could you tease us a bit with some Arethusa development tidbits?  A new design fifth rate might just be the ticket! I have been contemplating starting Chuck’s Winnie but sanding 27 bulkheads in 1/4 scale has me a bit intimidated and I don’t want to start another project and then lose heart.....  I am eagerly anticipating some awesomeness with this frigate though.....  

Or you could just relax for a bit before the Speedy rush kicks in.....  😇

Well Bitter End, you gave me permission to correct you so.....  Vulcanbomber is actually a scholar and gentlewoman, and a British woman at that! Quite the talented lady and has one of the best San Francisco builds on MSW, and as you commented, a very nice Pegasus in work. 

I will be glad to stop in periodically and if I can be of assistance I will, and if not I can certainly lead you astray.... 😀 just keep posting pics of your progress, and you will get lots of help and ideas here.....   Very consistent workmanship, and you seem to be meticulous as well, great first build effort so far! Keep at it and keep asking questions! 

Tapering is the definitive, correct “accepted” method for the first planking as it ensures that the planks all “land” on or are glued to a bulkhead which adds to the structural integrity of the hull, if you go with full planks and stealers you invariably will have some of those stealers terminating between bulkheads and only have another plank to glue to. That may or may not work out and you may have some spring back or “soft spots” on the hull - especially after you sand everything down to Fair the hull and you may wind up with hollows or bulges because the planks are not fixed to the bulkheads- some of which can be fixed with fillers but overall, the better job you do on the first planking  the better the second layer will look.

Ooooh I used to have a PRS Custom 22 - I really miss that guitar, I’ll forever regret that decision. Are you a Lead guitarist? Do you play anywhere? I pound chords and like to sing.....   We seem to have a lot in common - I worked at the base too....

Welcome to MSW Beck, what part of England are you from? I spent a few years in a little village called Hargrave in Northhamptonshire back in the early 70’s - my Dad was stationed at RAF Alconbury. Vane, that is exactly why I quit buying kits, it seemed to be a lot of money for something I could cut myself if I had the plans but Chris’s new designs are a refreshing departure from that era and I believe the value of these new designs is readily apparent. Vanguard Models are taking advantage of the current technology and the results speak for themselves, their lack of compromise is creating a new standard that is long overdue and I foresee huge success and a new renaissance being ushered in by VM as the market adjusts to their leadership.

Chris, I just looked at the Amati Victory thread and the construction photos, you have said that Bristol will be a similar design, I was wondering if you are planning on having a complete gun deck on her or are you planning to use  dummy guns on the gun deck? In awe of your Victory design and resulting beautiful model BTW.....

Dave, get them as close to the line as you are comfortable with, you are going to sand or file them down to the line by hand from there so anything you leave is just work... 😀  If you look at the laser cut bulkheads in the monograph you see that they are cut right to those lines....Also the outer portions will still be faired after assembling to the keel so you can take them to the line before assembling- this is where a spindle sander becomes a friend!

I figured it was a supply/demand thing but I was not aware of the snobbish attitudes, I was thinking I could stain the Boxwood - I will give that a try.... ordering soon..... sorry for digging in old wounds and for side tracking this thread....
