Whiskers... in saying the gun ports were too high, do you mean that the cannons were at the bottom of the gun port instead of in the middle? It was interesting that Chuck gave you a little template of the cannons in the Syren to use to check the proper placement of the gun ports. Maybe it would pay to make up one of the cannons first, then use it to help locate the gun ports? Chris, while I would love to use more exotic woods, I think I'll stick with Chuck's suggestion about staying the course and using the kit's wood. However, when it comes to other bits, such as the cannons, deadeyes, blocks and other metal parts, I think I'll look around to see if I can find some better quality parts. Thanks for your reply. I am an admirer of Chuck's work and the lessons learned in his instruction book during the building of the Syren. After a couple of years hiatus to do the Mamoli Constitution, Mrs. Santa brought me Chuck's Confederacy. I can't wait to get started as soon as my almost finished riverboat is completed. What I need to know is what additional parts and fittings should I acquire to do a really good job. Are the Kit's blocks, deadeyes and other bits and parts acceptable? Should I use better wood than the kit's basswood in different places where it would enhance the build? Plus, any words of wisdom from experienced Confederacy builders would be greatly appreciated. Every ship I have built had a bunch of "if only's", so if you can pass along to me your "if only's", it would be greatly appreciated.

first, did French frigates such as Hermione have copper plating? I am building her, and plan to leave the hull natural, using walnut veneer planking. Should I copper plate below the waterline or leave it natural? In your opinion, what would look the best?

I've been going over the instructions and plan sheets for the Artisania Latina Hermione, and I can't make heads or tails of the rigging plans. Is there any book I can get to help me understaand the rigging and A/L's crazy diagrams. I just finished rigging the Syren, and Chuck's instructions were excellent. I am at a loss with the A/L plans. Help!!!!!

Hello Bill and Mort. Like you, my Connie languished for about 25 years. I built and planked the hull, then put it aside. It was kept in a box all that time. About two years ago I took it out and started to work on it, thanks to help and pictures from Mort. I now have the hull, deck furniture, cannons etc., all completed. I have fashioned the masts and spars and painted them, and am ready to put the blocks, etc., on them. I have a couple of questions. How do you tell from the plans that a single or double block is required? Is it just from the drawing? For example, on the plan sheet the center block on the spar clearly has two holes. Are all the rest single? I am also building the Syren from Chuck's excellent plans at our winter house in Florida, and he clearly said to put every piece of hardware (blocks, rails, etc.) on masts, spars and tops before putting the masts and spars on. The Mamoli plans make it really difficult to see where everything goes, you have to check individual plan sheets, the big sheet, etc. Is there any easier way? Oh well, just venting! Bill. I will be following your progress carefully and hopefully you can keep me on the straight and narrow, and from making some really stupid mistakes. Many thanks for a great build log. Craig
