  1. I used this thin string and put it on a specific point at each end where I had marked the LWL on the bow and stern. At each end they are exactly 2 inches high. In the middle however, it is less than 2 inches. I pulled the string as tight as I possibly could without snapping the line, to try and make it completely straight all the way across, but it still looks off and the port and starboard sides look just a little different. So I'm wondering if string is not that accurate for this? Do I have to build a pencil marking jig? Is that my only option?
  2. What's up with your stern though? It looks warped.
  3. Yeah it's single planked. They're really hard to bend though. I just picked up a curling iron though so hopefully that will help.
  4. No you absolutely have to have water. With softer, thinner, woods it may not be necessary but anything 1/16 or over needs to be soaked for 10-20 minutes, the harder and thicker the wood is the closer to 20 minute you will need to soak. Also try to soak in warm water if at all possible. I just leave the sink on with hot water running and let the planks just sit under the running faucet. Immediately after taken out of the water use whatever source of heat you have to bend them as you do not want them to dry out. Too much drying and re-wetting can cause the wood to get waterlogged which is NOT good and will make ur wood look horrible. You only want to wet the wood one time if possible, and steam is definitely the best choice as that will not waterlog the wood as much
  5. And thank you for the pictures by the way!
  6. Ah yes you have quite a bit of material in front of you! Nice!
  7. For example if I was doing this as a scratch build how would I possibly get those decals?
  8. Hey Thanks for the email address! That was nice of you. Ill email them and see what I can dig up. Also I was thinking if they aren't able to do that maybe I could print off some decals? Where could I find a picture of just the scrollwork? Like that actual scrollwork itself not the boat and everything along with it?
  9. thanks nenad shes looking really great so far. are you going to do another layer of planking or have you already done two?i think its looking really really good. I have a full booklet of pictures for each step and they have a detailed description for each one so if youre ever confused on a certain step i could post a picture for you of the manual.
  10. My Latina 1/84 cutty is missing the gold scrollwork for the now and the gold lettering etc on the back not to mention the frames etc for the cabins. I found one online that said it was 1/78, would that be close enough? I would think it would be especially for just scroll work etc on the stern and bow. That was the only one I could find could anyone else help me? I just typed in "cutty sark photo etched set" in google and it seemed to know what I was looking for except no one has 1/84. Should I contact artesania-Latina?
  11. Could u post a picture of a full side and full deck view of ur ship? I am confused as to what is your ship and what are the other model pictures you've been posting? What does your ship look today, entirely?
  12. The cathead is the two beams sticking out on either side of the bow at roughly 45 degree angles which hold the anchors. They're located right at the front of the ship on either side literally sticking out like cat ears or horns.
  13. Girlfriend doesn't want me to use her curling iron cuz she says it would ruin the iron but I don't see why it would. Any help? Do you think it would? She says if I ruin it I gotta buy her a new one so Id rather go buy a cheap one for my planks if it really will ruin her nice'ish one.
  14. As you can see I have layer the first four deck strakes and the first three hull strakes. Deck Strakes- I run the strakes all the way down the deck without doing the brick pattern. I will do that later and show you how I replicate the brick pattern. I also lay a very dark brown thread in between each plank so replicate caulking. I do this with all my ships decks. Hull Planking : I am already seeing some problems in the planking for this ship. The timbers are so fat that even when I soak them in hot water for over Thierry minutes I cannot get then to bend around the stern without cracking. So until I get my hands on a plank bender I am just working on the above deck stuff. Let me know what ya think!
  15. wow thats lookin great! keep it up. shame to hear about your situation. but u can always build it and copper it later thanks for the update
  16. ya it says im supposed to use thse but i really dont understand why unless they are truly trying to have xactly the right scaled lumber
  17. You can get copper plates online. You could always have someone in the US get them for you and send them to you
  18. That model was actually part of the Vallejo gallery so it has to be historically accurate.. So now I'm wondering if my plans are off or if this guy is doing it wrong
